Finding Niemeyer – Rio’s great modernist architect
If you visit Rio, take the journey from central Rio across the Niteroi Bridge to experience the 11-kilometre Niemeyer Way. You’ll be able to view the spectacular creations of a Brazilian icon, the great modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer.
Here’s my story on Oscar Niemeyer, published in the April 1, 2017 edition of Fairfax Media’s The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller.

Road trip around New Zealand’s Northland and Rotorua
Apart from the better-known Bay of Islands, who knew the rest of New Zealand’s Northland was such a gorgeous, unspoiled place. Add Rotorua into the mix and you have the makings of an unforgettable journey. Just don’t expect too much from the roads. With a poor rail system, aggressive, entitled truck drivers dominate.
Here’s my story published in fairfax Media’s Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller in March, 2017 and the easier-to-read online link on Traveller.com.au:

Ballyfin House, Ireland – Conde Nast 2016 Best Hotel in the World
It’s not every day you stay in the best hotel in the world. Unplanned.
A few days before my arrival, Conde Nast announced this readers’ choice award, so … Serendipity!
With only 20 rooms, it will be harder to get a booking now. The hotel received 85 new bookings in within a few days of the announcement. It’s a gorgeous place, with a history that mirror’s Ireland’s. Go if you can.
My story was published in The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller on Saturday, November 5. Below is a PDF.

Cape Whale Safari – South Africa
I loved writing this story – following the route of those gentle creatures that visit the Cape every year to give birth and nurture their young.
As one wise whale lover once said: “Whales are different. They live in families, they play in the moonlight, they talk to one another and they care for one another in distress. They are awesome and mysterious. In their cold, wet, and forbidding world they are complete and successful. They deserve to be saved, not as potential meatballs but as a source of encouragement to mankind.”
Here’s my story, published in Fairfax Media’s Traveller on October 2, 2016:

Heaven on Earth Valley – South Africa
Cooled by Atlantic breezes, carpeted in vineyards and folded in the arms of velvet mountains, this paradise near Africa’s southernmost tip, just 90 minutes from Cape Town, is producing, some might say, the nectar of the gods.
My story on South Africa’s Heaven on Earth (Hemel en Aarde) Valley was published in Fairfax Media’s The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller in August 2016.
