South Africa off the beaten track – charming places to stay
I grew up in Cape Town and have travelled extensively there since leaving many years ago. I still love it, especially those beautiful valleys and villages that tourists often don’t visit.
What my partner and I really enjoy is hiring a car and driving – the roads are good, the people are friendly, the culture is fascinating and there are many hidden and exquisite places. And for overseas visitors, the exchange rate makes travelling cheap.
Here’s my story on five charming places to stay outside the cities, which was published in Fairfax Media’s The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller on July 14, 2016. I’ve also included the online link which you will find on Traveller.com.au below.

Cambodia – the monk who forgot how to chant
A Mekong cruise through Cambodia and Vietnam is a wonderful way to experience a great deal of those two countries in not much time.
I’ve written a number of stories about Scenic’s cruise on the lovely Scenic Spirit. Here’s another about our wonderful Cambodia guide, a former monk, who gave us a complex and fascinating insight into Buddhism, using some of his own story to illustrate this way of life.
It was published in The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller on July 14, 2016. Here’s a screenshot and the online link from Traveller.com.au is below.

Namibia: land of sand and stone
Namibia is another planet – Fierce, alien, drenched in primeval colours – red for fire, ochre for earth, black for magma, purple for deep space – this country is no place for the fainthearted.
My nine-day, 3400km journey on Rovos Rail’s luxury Pride of Africa train took me deep into the heart of this beautiful, desolate country.
You can click the link below for my cover story here, published in The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller onSaturday, June 25 or read it at the online link provided:

The Vineyard – Cape Town’s lovely historic hotel
Cape Town’s beloved Lady Anne Barnard built a peaceful country cottage set among vineyards in 1799.
The original home is still there but has been renovated and developed into the 207-room luxury Vineyard hotel. I have fond memories of growing up near the Vineyard in Newlands and visiting it often with my parents.
This beautiful spot set in its gorgeous 3.5-hectare gardens is on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain – the “other” side of the mountain from the city – but should never be neglected by tourists.
My story on the hotel was published in The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Travellers on Saturday, June 19, 2016. Here is the screenshot and you can read it more easily online at:

Greenwich Village food tour – the walking picnic
There will be food – lots of it!
Foods of New York’s terrific gourmet food and culture tour of lower Manhattan’s Greenwich Village is well worth doing, if you can bear the calories – guide Bert James is a total star.

Savannah – America’s next top food destination
No longer the poor cousin of Charleston, gorgeous Savannah offers more than just Spanish moss, historic buildings, shaded squares and cobblestone streets; there’s also some seriously good food happening.
