So, the debate goes on. Can you manage time or you manage yourself? Whichever way you look at it, time is the most scarce commodity, and it should be handled with care. Obviously, you can lose money and earn more in the future. But once you lose time, it is gone forever.

However, mother nature is very fair to all humans. Everyone, regardless of background, age, qualifications, connections, and whatsoever, has the same 24 hours per day. It is up to each person whether to use time wisely or to waste it.

Great leaders understand the essence of time. That is why most great leaders wake up regularly between 2 am and 6 am. By waking up early, leaders have enough time to read, watch useful videos, listen to impactful audios, meditate, and plan the day. On the contrary, average people wake up late and inconsistently; they are always in a hurry, they underperform and they are always late for meetings, classes or work.

If you genuinely want to become a great leader, you need to learn to treat time with respect.

Do you keep time, or you always give excuses such as ‘traffic’? There is no excuse for lateness and/or delays, especially when you are in a leadership position.

As a leader what makes you happy, what you own or whom you have become?

Oftentimes, people assume that a higher salary, bonuses and material wealth will make them happy. However, after some time they realize that happiness comes more from intangible things and what you do to help others, as compared to material things. While material things are very good and they can make one happy, in many cases the happiness tends to be short-lived. On the other hand, what you do for other people tends to be more fulfilling in the long run.

Thus, as much as it is important for you to aim for higher positions, more money and more assets; if you want to be happy and fulfilled as a leader, it is crucial for you develop yourself mentally, spiritually, physically, emotionally and so on. This helps you to appreciate who you are, your purpose and where you fit in the environment. Furthermore, you can find more people to help. Find more team members that you can inspire, coach, counsel, or console. By so doing, you increase your happiness without necessarily attaching it to things, but rather, who you are and whom you are becoming.

What are your thoughts on this?

Do gender, origins, physical composition or skin color matter in leadership?

Some people have problems with being led by people of a different gender or skin color from theirs. On the other hand, some people fail to lead effectively because they despise their gender and/or skin color.

Your skin color, origins, and gender do not matter. What matters is your ability to influence people positively. What matters is your ability to be a visionary, to build a team and to keep the team inspired to achieve set goals in the long run.

Are you physically challenged? Have you been made to feel less by others due to your origins, gender or skin color? It is time for you to arise and demonstrate the qualities of a good leader, regardless of people’s perceptions.

However, I need to admit that when people have a prejudice against you, there is a need to prove yourself. Remember that respect is earned. People will not just honor you without you first proving that you have something in you that is honorable.

I am privileged because I have an open mind. I comfortably work with people of different gender, origins, skin color and/or the physically challenged. Whether they lead me, or I lead them, I embrace them. What about you?

Out of your comfort zone as a leader

Leadership is not for the faint-hearted. As a leader, you are often pushed by circumstances to make unconventional decisions. You are catapulted into getting out of your comfort zone. Most people delight in their comfort zone. However, not so for leaders. Leaders should get used to ‘walking alone in the dark’. As they say, ‘eagles fly alone’. That is one of the reasons why it can be quite lonely at the top. Leadership is for the bold and courageous. Are you bold and courageous enough to walk alone and to make unconventional decisions?

Strategy versus Tactics

By Dr. Wilbert R. Mutoko

7th October 2019

There are so many definitions of strategy. I think this is because the word strategy is fancy, and everyone has their own definition of it. Many times, people use tactics and they call them strategies. Nevertheless, is a strategy the same as a tactic?

The strategy has its roots in the military. In the military, they say, ‘If you have a (good) strategy, the war is 50% won.’ What this means is that for you to win a war, you need a long-term plan on how you will defeat your opponent, battle after battle. In my opinion, what you do for one battle should not be called strategies, but rather, tactics. Tactics are short-term while strategies are long-term and all-encompassing.

The same applies to football games. The team management, coach and his/her team should have a strategy for three to five years on how they will beat their opponents and lift as many trophies as possible. However, each game can have tactics for winning.

Similarly, businesses need to have a three-to-five-year strategy which stipulates the direction which the business will take. A strategy helps you to remain focused. It assists the organization to know what to do and what not to do.

Does your organization have a strategy? Has the strategy been cascaded to all employees? Do all the employees understand the strategy? Is everyone sure of where they belong in the strategy?

Before you lead others

By Dr. Wilbert R. Mutoko

4th October 2019

It is very easy to think of leading others. Furthermore, it takes less effort to evaluate others and identify where they miss the point. However, it is difficult to lead you. Thus, before you lead others, I suggest that you should learn to lead you.

Successful leaders understand that before one leads others, one has to lead self. Therefore, before you lead others in your family, in your community, in your class, in your workplace, in your enterprise, or in your country; the first question is: how successful are you at leading you?

Do you have a personal vision? Are you self-motivated? Do you love yourself? Do you genuinely care about you? Do you take time to reflect on where you are doing well and where you are missing it? When was the last time you rewarded yourself for doing well? Are your spirit, soul (mind, will, and emotions), and body in unity? How much learning do you do for personal development? Which book are you currently reading?

Guess what?  If you do not love yourself, it is difficult to love others. If you cannot forgive you for the wrongs that you have done to you, who else will you forgive? If you are not self-motivated, how can you motivate others? How can you build a team that will make things happen when you are having conflicts within you as an individual? If you cannot reward yourself for the smallest of achievements, how possible is it for you to reward your team? If you cannot reflect on your progress, how can you be a better leader? If you are not consistently increasing your knowledge level, how can you empower your team?

So, before you lead others anymore, take time to assess yourself, understand yourself, motivate yourself, love yourself, be holistically in charge of yourself, follow your personal vision and align it to the organizational or country vision.

What are your thoughts on what one should do before leading others?

Thank you so much for reading.

Together we will lead better and leave the world a better place.

Which one is better between leadership and management?

Dr. Wilbert R. Mutoko

It is difficult to say which is more important between leadership and management. Both of them are crucial.

Managers usually plan, control, co-ordinate and organize; while leaders craft a vision, build and inspire a team towards achieving the goal.

One could say that leaders come first, then managers implement what the leaders have outlined.

However, remember that it is possible for one to be both a manager and a leader at the same time. The only challenge we have is that we have too many managers and very few leaders. Therefore, we want more managers to evolve into leaders.

What are your thoughts on this?

Being in a leadership position does not necessarily make you a leader.
