THEN LET THE SHADOWS COME

in secrets that you hide.
Codes you have carried,
on ladders deep inside.
Where is not the riddle,
when how is the key.
Words are your power,
reflected back times three.
Time is but an echo,
since nothing’s ever lost.
History’s repeating,
for souls that forgot.
There’ll be a chosen few,
whose patterns will unlock.
Some will search the dark,
and some will quest for God.
Wither in your hell,
or share your inner voice.
Nothing is by chance,
when freedom has a choice.

WORD WISE: Steampunk
Just this morning I was asked, what is Steampunk? Excellent question! I’ll add another. Is there really a true, coherent, and consistent definition for it? Let’s see. I’m not a big advocator of Wikipedia, but it did have an excellent Steampunk defining page. Steampunk is a Hybrid sub-genre focusing on steam powered technology set in a certain era such as the Victorian age. This era can be placed in any new time or new place. This oversimplification does not do the word or category justice, but it’ll have to do for now.
I’m not sure when I was first exposed to it. It could have been my first H. G. Wells book, the many television episodes of Wild Wild West, or maybe it happened when I played my first game of Myst? No matter when the exposure occurred, I think it was in my blood before I was born. I’m not even sure its name became a common buzz word until the 20th century. I could be wrong. The label didn’t reach my virgin ears until four years ago. The Zeppelin Airships, Top Hats, and Robotic Spiders had already started dancing in my head long before that.
I get excited, inventing and creating new technology, joining the beauty of nature with machine; in the most cohesive, non-obtrusive way. Is that really possible? Of course it is! That’s the wonderful thing about being a fiction writer, you create the world you want. And I don’t have to tell you, todays science fiction is tomorrows science fact! This genre allows for out-of-the-box thinking. It gives the writer an unlimited supply of creative energy so I will slip Steampunk in wherever I can. So it goes, from my first published, science fiction horror series, The Dark Seeds, to all the storytelling I have left to do, you will always taste a little Steampunk in all I write. May all my stories feed your need!

MY JOURNAL: Triple Scoop
Once upon a time there were two brothers. They left with their father to the local Thrifty Drug Store for ice cream. The younger brother handed the server his quarter and got a single scoop. It was a magical, happy moment until he saw his older brother turn around with a double scoop ice cream cone!
“That’s not fair! He have more than me!”
The father smiled and placed a firm but gentle hand on his younger son’s shoulder. “Yes, he does but it is fair son because your brother came to me, asking for extra chores around the house. He worked twice as hard, twice as long, so he earned twice as much. That’s why he has two scoops and you don’t. He earned it.”
The younger son was still upset. He didn’t like having less than his brother but nothing could change the situation. He wasn’t happy with what he had anymore, he just wanted what his brother had. The next day, after he had time to calm down, the younger brother realized what his father was trying to teach him. He made up his mind he was going to work all over the house and buy a triple scoop ice cream cone! If his brother could work hard, then so could he… and so he did.
Though I started this story with the words, “Once upon a time…”, this story is far from being a fairy tale, it’s a true story. My husband was that younger brother. He learned a slightly painful lesson that started with a single scoop of ice cream. That younger brother grew up to become my hero and he sacrifices for his family and our great nation he serves daily to protect.
I am thankful every day for all my husband does for us, and I am thankful he was blessed with a father who believed in being a parent. It takes a quiet strength to teach the hard but valuable lessons early on to your kids.
There will always be someone who has more than you. There will always be someone who has less. You should be proud of all you earn. It’s up to you to mold your future by the choices you make. Should life get in the way, and it always will, it can do nothing but slow you down unless you choose to quit. My husband worked hard, got his triple scoop, but didn’t stop there. He continues to work hard and he will never stop until all his dreams are fully realized… one scoop at a time.
