RATINGS, RANKS, & REVIEWS
It’s an Amazon amazing feeling; first to see one book published, then two, now three out of five in my Dark Seeds series available for anyone to read. So started my road to becoming an Indie Author. Then the ratings started to show and I was getting fans. All my books average 5 stars across the board! I’ve read everything from readers falling in love with certain characters and hating others, as they should, and some readers getting in trouble with their spouse because they never made it to bed! (Hence came the Flashlight recommended reading one-liner.) The rankings are a constant tug on the shirt, whisper from my shoulder, “Hey, where are the Dark Seeds now?” Today I’m so happy to announce that Crows Hill hit the #1 slot for Steampunk books in the Science Fiction genre! As for the Horror genre it also falls under, those numbers are getting better too! Thank you to all my fans, thank you to everyone who has been so eager to see what the Dark Seeds are all about. I hope you enjoy the story that is sure to feed you need. WARNING: To all the parents out there with kids who want to be, or are already Dark Seeds fans, I ask that you please read my soon to be released third book: 13 Degrees Below Zero (March 13, 2013) and decide if it’s age appropriate for your son or daughter before letting them read it. As my story progresses in the series, so does the darkness within them. Maybe it’s the first book, Crows Hill, maybe even the second, Project Hourglass, that meet your Young Adult standards, but this book went up several notches in the violence, explicit language, and sexual arenas. IT WILL HAPPEN, I KNOW NOT WHEN
Inspirational Flash Fiction
Put a red dot in the middle of a white canvas, give yourself an artsy-fastsy name, get yourself a politically rich sponsor and POOF! You ARE the most talented, artistic, genius of your time and the amazing painting you slaved over must be worth millions of dollars.
Now, take out your dip pen and recreate a black and white photo on canvas until it looks like a photocopy, sign it with your birth name because you are proud of your heritage, gather what pennies you can and thank your friends for all their support, and POOF! Oh wait, not yet, not this time.
You won’t make it into the local art gallery this time because there is a white canvas with a red dot hanging there. The starting bid? A couple million. You look down at your piece. How long did it take you? A couple months wasn’t it? There’s so much detail. Look at the lines, the shadows, the exquisite eye for light and shadow; you have such passion and it clearly shows. I can understand why you would smile and why you’re also disappointed, but don’t let that stop you. Don’t let it ever stop you.
You must become the dream. It’s hard work but it’s truth that makes its way to the top of the mountain. Someday, maybe not today or tomorrow, but there will come a time, your time, when the light will shine only for you. It will come though you may not know when. So stay focused on your dream and never give up on it.

IN AN OCEAN OF AUTHORS
It’s no longer up to agents or publishers. It’s up to you to determine which self-published writers will see their dreams come true. Take 30 seconds of your time and write a review, click on those Amazon stars, because you can change an author’s life forever. Digital books are here to stay. It’s a world that won’t be ignored. Even traditional publishers can’t deny it’s qualities; it’s creating money in a quickly booming field. Those who try to ignore it will go broke. Some of the greatest writers of our time, who have been traditionally published authors all along, are self-publishing. Well, why not? Cutting out all the middle men to keep most of the royalties is just smart.
Most of the public doesn’t realize famous authors have their names to keep them afloat on top of the heap. Unknown writers must dog paddle their way, if they ever make it. Self-publishing isn’t exactly easy; a lot to learn, to do, time consuming, but it can be done without having to pay another person if you take the time to learn. There are problems though: not everyone is a writer, most everyone can’t afford an editor, can’t afford a cover artist, can’t afford advertising, and if a writer wants to eat, most everyone can’t afford the time to market what they just published.
The next Stephen King, Tolkien, or Hemingway could be drowning in a ocean of self-published books just waiting for readers to save them just by leaving a review. That’s why I’ve written this today. You have the power to determine the fate of authors for books you read. The more downloads a book/author has, the more likes the book is left, the more positive reviews there are, and the higher the stars there are to repeat this circle, the higher this author’s name and his or her books will rise to the surface. The higher they are, the lower their number will be, until they reach the top 100 books and that’s when Amazon, other publishers, agents, and sometimes even movie producers, start to take notice. Once this is started, this cycle continues and catches on until the author’s dream of having the next best seller or Hollywood film becomes a reality; all starting from your single planted seed called a review. So next time you think the small things in life really don’t matter, think again. They have the power to make the dreams of another come true.
