New novel accepted for publication

Great news! I am pleased to announce that my historical novel, THE WOLF OF BRITANNIA, Volume I & II (duo-logy) has been accepted for publication by Sunbury Press and a contract has been sent to me. In the words of the publisher, Lawrence Knorr, "We can't wait to get this started!" Be advised this is not a vanity press. It is a traditional small press. http://www.sunburypress.com/SunburyPr...

Book Signing Follow-up

Book signing follow-up. Back from trip to California where I visited my son and his family down in San Jose. This also included a book signing of my historical novel @ Barnes & Noble Booksellers, San Mateo. The city is about 20 miles south of San Francisco (San Jose is 48 miles) and sits next to the bay. Nice area. Because I am originally from the Bay Area, have family in San Jose and San Francisco and am a retired Long Beach Police Sergeant, the store promoted me as a local author.

The signing was a complete sell-out. Handed out lots of flyers and book markers, met lots of interesting people (this is a very multicultural area) and signed lots of books.

I want to thank Community Relations Manager, Liz, and Associates Christina and Frank for their assistance in making this a successful event. Liz wants me to return for another signing when my next novel, The Wolf of Britannia, is published.

Excerpt from The Sign of the Eagle

Macha noticed the ragged leather and hob-nailed caligae on the scarred-face brigand's feet. Two toes were missing from his left foot. Her gaze shifted to his right hand, and she spied six fingers.

"I know this sniveling maggot," the tribune said. "He's a deserter from the First Legion Italica's cavalry detachment." Appius grabbed the prisoner's tunic and ripped it to the waist. Tattooed on his right shoulder was a blue eagle with spreading wings grasping the letter I in its claws.

The eagle again, Macha thought.

Latest 5 Star Review from Amazon

This is the latest 5 star review, posted by Tamara Turner, on Amazon of my historical, THE SIGN OF THE EAGLE.

Sometimes a Book CAN be Judged by its (LOVELY) Cover.

Murder, spies, and bravery, oh my! My favorite storytelling is the kind that inhales me into a tale with the opening line. The Sign of the Eagle will do just that. I admire an author who can teleport me immediately to the scene; I can feel it, smell it, not just visualize it. Jess Steven Hughes does that very thing. This is one historical novel that doesn’t frustrate a general audience; the reader is not required to be a historian or fluent in another language. Encouraged by intriguing chapter titles, the novel beautifully unfolds a bold and suspenseful mystery. You’ll fall in love with the engaging Macha and plunge deeply into her quest. Transported to the year 71 A.D., you’ll remain completely enveloped in each scene of the journey until its resolution, where you will close the book with a smile.

Excerpt from The Sign of the Eagle

An excerpt from THE SIGN OF THE EAGLE
Macha would never forget the stench, the darkness, the freezing cold, and above all else the boil-infested rats that stole her meager food. Those terrible conditions combined with the horrors of agonizing torture were enough to make anyone confess, lies though they might be.

Book Signing Follow-up

Book signing follow-up. Another sell-out. Yesterday, I signed copies of my historical, THE SIGN OF THE EAGLE, at Barnes & Noble, Booksellers, Kennewick, Washington. The first couple of hours I shared the table with fellow author, Michelle A. Hansen, author of the YA mystery, BEFORE THEY FIND US. We must have fed off each other because people, who would stop to look at one of our books, wound up buying both. It was a win-win situation for both of us. She was a delightful person to speak to and we swapped ideas about writing, etc. Usually, I don't like being part of group signings, because, at least for me, they are duds. Since Michelle was only other writer present, it worked out well for both of us.

I want to thank Community Relations Manager Wendy for scheduling the event and Associate, Candy, for her assistance that contributed to a successful event.
