All Kinds Of Accolades…thank you!
I’m not one to toot my own horn, but good news just kept arriving in my inbox the past few months. I thought I would share the news…

2013 In Review
Here is my obligatory year end recap of posts and events…
It’s always the conundrum of presenting a list of posts that had the largest audience or the posts that I think were important. But this year I decided to include many posts that aren’t deep in nature, but are more playful.
At the end you’ll see a list of posts that are timeless favorites.
Without further ado, I present my 2013 in review:
January
D-Mom Blog celebrated it’s 3 year anniversary…which means that January 1st it will be FOUR year...

{Holidays} Advent Calendar Redux
Join me between now and Christmas as I share some posts from Christmas Past as well as some new thoughts on how to deal with the holidays.
I know we’re way past the point of purchasing new Advent calendars, but my point is that there is always an alternative.
The past few years I purchased a $2 Advent calendar at Walgreens filled with tiny chocolates that were so few in carbs I didn’t even have to bolus for them.
Right after Halloween this year I grabbed one for each kid and it wasn’t until I go...

Candy Canes: Not So Many Carbs, Either
Join me between now and Christmas as I share some posts from Christmas Past as well as some new thoughts on how to deal with the holidays.
We were delightfully surprised that the chocolates in the kids’ advent calendars had only about 2 grams of carbs each and could easily fit into Q’s snacks without the need for a ton of insulin, if any.
The kids have been asking for candy canes. Some companies do make sugar free or artificially sweetened candy canes. But you know my take on it: I try to avoid...

Pez, Oh Yes, We Have Santa Pez
Join me between now and Christmas as I share some posts from Christmas Past as well as some new thoughts on how to deal with the holidays.
So last year Q’s grandmother wanted to give her Pez. I said no because it was just more sugar to have to keep her from over consuming.
But I bet everyone reading this got Pez in their stocking as a child. Oh, the characters! Oh, the little tablets of pure sugar that tasted like absolutely nothing but for some reason were so fun to eat. Tilt your head back Sa...

Holiday Decorating With Diabetes Supplies
Join me between now and Christmas as I share some posts from Christmas Past as well as some new thoughts on how to deal with the holidays.
Alternate title: How to turn your used OmniPod’s into Christmas tree ornaments.
Daily care of diabetes creates a ton of waste. Between test strips, lancets, syringes, empty vials, and more, I think a diabetic could fill a landfill in her lifetime. Hardly any of these items can be recycled and it’s even difficult to responsibly dispose of used items, particul...

Advent Calendars: All the Countdown, Not So Many Carbs
Join me between now and Christmas as I share some posts from Christmas Past as well as some new thoughts on how to deal with the holidays.
Christmas is much anticipated in our home and what better way to count down than with an Advent calendar.
I purchased this German Advent Calendar at a locally owned store which sells kitchen items, toys, and lots of specialty foods.
I figured I would let Q open the door and have the piece of chocolate with dinner each night. But when I looked at the nutrition...

{YouTube Tuesday} Empathy
How many times have you, when telling someone about your child’s type 1 diabetes, heard:
“Well, at least it’s not cancer.”
Yeah, not helpful.
Here is a good video explaining the difference between empathy and sympathy.

Here are a few items I’ve come across that I thought I would share with D-Mom Blog readers.
FreeStyle Test Strip Recall
Abbott has issued a recall of certain lots of their test strips which may give inaccurate readings. None of the boxes in our supply cabinet are affected, but I have them stashed all over school! Read the recall notice and see which lot numbers are affected.
