Diabetes Art Day 2014

Diabetes Art DayToday is the annual Diabetes Art Day. Q is sharing the picture she drew for our senator whom we met with for a JDRF Promise meeting. We left the original with the senator, but I had the foresight to copy it first.

Her piece of art is titled “A Day With Diabetes.”

Head on over to D-Kid Blog to check it out.

Spare A Rose, Save A Child

Spare a Rose Save a Child

As families who live in a developed nation, we complain about and debate the price of test strips, the accuracy of test strips, access to diabetes technology such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, and the long trip to see the endocrinologist every three months.

We have every right to want better care for our children with diabetes. Our children deserve the best diabetes management that we can give them to help ensure that they live the longest, healthiest lives they can.

But for...

{Sponsored} Smucker’s Support of National Parks

Sponsored Post I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for Smucker’s. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating. Please read my disclosure statement.

My kids take a PB&J in their lunchboxes almost every single day. I make and freeze batches of “uncrustables” using white whole wheat bread, all fruit jam, and Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter. I’ve always used Smucker’s (even before diabetes) because I personally don’t like peanut butter with added sugar or extr...

2:00 AM TV Watching Recommendations: You’re wide awake anyway, why not entertain yourself?

Many of us commiserate on Facebook and Twitter at all hours of the night that we are up with our children checking blood sugars, trying to bring up lows, or trying to safely bring down highs.

For me, I have a difficult time falling back asleep once I’ve been up and out of bed.

I know some parents check their child’s blood sugar every single night around 2:00 am. I’ve come to rely on the accuracy of the continuous glucose monitor to wake me up if my daughter is going too high or too low, but som...

(Via DiaTribe) I’ve long been saying that we need a simplified way to give glucagon, meaning that we need a shelf-stable, pre-mixed form of glucagon that would be easier for caregivers (school staff!) to administer since there are so many steps. Also, loving that they will have a mini-glucagon version for trea...

{Diabetes Management} My Non-Scientific Explanation of Standard Deviation

Please remember that I never give medical advice. Ask your endocrinologist or pediatrician for advice about your own child. Make your own informed decisions for your own child.

I’ve heard many parents are perplexed when they look at their meter, pump, or CGM data with their endo and “standard deviation” is mentioned.

So here’s my layperson’s explanation of standard deviation:

Standard deviation is the variability.

Say your BG average is 150.

You can get that average from having a ton of 50′s and...
