{D-LOL} New Diabetes Slogans #1

I think we could all use a little humor when thinking about and discussing type 1 diabetes. I’m proposing a few new slogans which I feel get to the heart of what it’s really like to manage type 1 diabetes. Come back next Thursday for another!

Frozen, Elsa, and Type 1 Diabetes…Better than a coat made of weasels

Disney Video

Note: I’m typing this quickly on my phone, so please excuse any typographical or grammatical errors or factual inaccuracies. I’ll swing back around with links, videos, and more thoughts.

Q and I sat down together to watch “The Making of Frozen” last night. Normally I would have DVRed it and not watched an hour long show on a school night, but we recently gave up cable.

The directors and producers were discussing how Frozen is based on the story “The Snow Queen,” which was vindicatio...

{Diabetes Management} Birthday Cake?

Please remember that I never give medical advice. Ask your endocrinologist or pediatrician for advice about your own child. Make your own informed decisions for your own child.

Birthday Cake

A question I see very frequently of d-parents during that first year after their child’s diagnosis is whether their child can have birthday cake, should they only have a tiny slice, and should it be made sugar-free.

Can my child with diabetes have birthday cake?

The short answer is: “Yes, your child can have cake!”

When ou...

Tips For Getting Glucagon And EpiPens With Longer Expiration Dates

Please remember that I never give medical advice. Ask your endocrinologist or pediatrician for advice about your own child. Make your own informed decisions for your own child.

glucagon epipen expiration

I think everyone has been stocking up on glucagon and epipens for the school year because I’ve heard lots of grumbling among d-moms and allergy moms about receiving glucagon and epipens that expire short of a year.

I personally like to send in glucagon kits and epipens that are good for the entire school year so that I d...

{Diabetes At School} Lilly Diabetes Books Online

Lilly Diabetes Book

We are fans of the Lilly Diabetes books featuring Coco the Monkey. Even our child without diabetes likes them and has learned quite a bit from the Q&A at the end of each book.

I know not everyone has been able to get their hands on the Disney Coco books or the ESPN themed books. In theory all pediatric endo practices should be able to get them from their Lilly rep.

If you are looking for these books, Lilly and Disney’s t1everydaymagic website now has six books available for viewing online. What...

{Diabetes Management} CGM in the Cloud, AKA Nightscout

A few months ago I heard about a group of parents who decided they weren’t waiting for the diabetes device companies and for the FDA to have a device that would stream continuous glucose monitor (CGM) data to the cloud. A quick search on social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #wearenotwaiting will yield lots of results from parents of kids with diabetes (and even a few adult PWD’s) who are using what they have termed “CGM in the Cloud.”

So for these few months I h...

{Diabetes At School} Lots of Links and Resources

Diabetes At School

I for one am really not ready for the school year to begin. I like the lazier schedule of summer, even if our calendar was filled with activities these past few months. I loathe the reading log and busywork that is homework. Don’t even get me started on Common Core or standardized testing.

But since school is inevitable, here are some posts and links that might help you make the transition whether it’s your child’s first year as a kindergartener or they are in an upper grade:
