American Vampire nominated for Eagle Awards 2012!

Today, I've woke up with this great news: Ghost War, the 3rd arc of American Vampire was nominated for the Eagle, one of the most important awards in Europe.

For us, this is a big honor, not only for being nominated (thats a big deal, dont get me wrong), but because this is a popular choice. Thank you, READER, for this privilege!

I also wish luck to AV writer, Scott Snyder also for his other well deserved many nominations, proving that he is one of the greatest new writers in the business!

Cheers,

Rafa.

Art preview for Batman: The Night of the Owls.

DC Comics has just released my first image for Batman: The Night of the Owls, my new collaboration with Scott Snyder.

This is a Talon, one of the members of the Court of the Owls who is facing Batman in this new arc. I'm illustrating the backup stories along with Greg Capullo, who is taking care of the main adventure.

Click here to see the full image at The Source, the official DC's blog!

The design of this Talon was made by me, based in Greg's visual concepts and the first chapter will come out in Batman #8, april 18th.

Batman!

I was expecting for this so hard over this weekend. DC Comics has just announced this morning, that the new Batman monthly comic will feature backup stories written by (my long time partner in American Vampire) Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV, and illustrated by me. The main story will continue to have the amazing art of Greg Capullo.

Its important to say (,my dear American Vampire fan,) that this new gig wont change anything in my regular (and main) job as American Vampire artist, so dont worry. Im still doing it regularly.

This is a great way to start the year, and thanks a lot for the supporting messages on twitter, facebook and, well…internet in general. Its really cool to kn

December 26, 2011

2011 was just the begining.

So, the year is almost done and I can say 2011 was an intense year, professional (and personally as well), for the good and the bad. Couldn't be happier to see that everything turned out well. Below a few thoughts and thanks about the year that is almost gone:

It was amazing to see how American Vampire got into people's taste, selling really well (and being #1 in the famous NYTimes List) the both volumes published so far. We were nominated for most of the awards in the industry as well, winning the traditional Eisner and Harvey Awards (an honor I've never imagined i'd have). Thats all really cool indeed.

However thats not the coolest. The coolest is being working with Scott Snyder and Mark Doyle every day. The most talented and awesome guys I could work with. There is no honor like that and I'd like to thank them for that.

2011 was an important year as well, because I've finally started to write stories myself. I have co-worked in scripts before, but I was scared as hell to write alone (and still am), but Tune 8, a web-comic published in Brazil by IG Jovem, made me to overcome this fear. I'm really enjoying doing this now, so it's a pleasure to say that Tune 8 will be published in US next year. Really soon it will be announced and new stories with these characters are already being written. I'd like to thank the fellas Rafa Coutinho and Rafael Grampa for pushing me on this and trust me to do it.

People asked me what's next. Keep up doing this. Keep working in cool projects, with the best people I know. For me, thats the only way to do great comics.

See you in 2012.

Rafa.

Taxi?

Com a ajuda do amigo Rafael Scavone e a galera do estúdio (fodão) Jungle It!

Eu sei. Shame on me.

É sempre bom rever os chapas Marcelo Campos (patrono da White Russian Society), Tainan Rocha, Weberson Santiago (endiabrado), Rafa Coutinho, Lobo, Gustavo Duarte, Fábio Moon, Gabriel Bá, Grampá, Roger Cruz (e a querida Bruna Brito), Orlando Pedroso, Danilo Beyruth, Marcelo Braga e Pedro Franz.

Nunca imaginei ver algo assim no Brasil.

Early this year I was invited to attend this convention i've never heard about. But, talking to my friend CB Cebulski in Argentina he said: I went there and its great. Different than anything you have ever experienced. And prepare to eat a lot.

So, september has arrived, and there was we (me and Deb, my grilfriend) flying to Spain full of expectations. When we got there, Jorge Argiz (the main organizer of the event), Germán and Roberto were there to take us to the hotel. Arriving on the town, we saw a small, cute and almost medieval village. That was the historic center of Avilés. No cars allowed. Never saw anything like that. I've liked since the begining.

Deb and I walked arround the town, having a great time, and by the evening we've met the other guests: Tony Harris (fenomenal Starman and Ex-Machina artist) and his huge charisma, the talented Brandon Peterson, Mark Buckinghan (and his charming wife Irma), Melinda Gebbie (Lost Girls), John McCrea, Hitman artist (one of my favorite comics ever), the Scalped team Jason Aaron (and his lovely wife Kelly) and the master R.M. Guera. I've the honor to met, briefely Juanjo Guarnido, the artist of Blacksad whom I'm  huge fan. So, for the caliber of the guests, you can see how special is this place. I'd specially would like to thank all the organizers Jorge, his girlfriend Rosio (who owns a really cool comic shop in the town), Diego, an amazing translator (seriously. The guy must speas 50 languages…), the silent Gérman and Roberto for all the amazing dinners (and extra pounds), and kind. Also, would like to thank all the fans, who went there to meet all their favorite creators, with respect and generosity (they are always paying coffees and beers). After that, I understood why this is a such a special event.

Leaving Aviés, we spent a few days in Barcelona, and there we had the opportunity to meet the living legend Jordi Bernet. He is right now illustrating 3-part arc of my book, American Vampire. We had a great time drinking coffee and talking about comics (and gossips). Awesome artist, awesome guy.

In my first time in Europe, I couldn't have been in a better place to start.

Muchas gracias, Espana! See you soon!
