Moved To Tears
Reblogged from steph's scribe: I don’t know what it is about driving in a car by yourself with the ability to listen to whatever music you choose, but there are some songs that are so poetic, they move me to tears. I'm back to my old tricks--the hopeless romantic in me has returned. Full force. On my way up to Local Authors Day at the Bel Air Library (a 45-minute drive), I was listening to John Mayer. “You think life is like living in a magazine."
Reblogged from steph's scribe: I’m not sure if it was last year or the year before during our family vacation when my father offered one of his astute and memorable (and humorous) observations. We were sitting on the beach and I was romanticizing about the late afternoon time of day; we were some of the only folks on the beach and the sun was lowering in the sky. Taking A Hiatus
Dear Readers, I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I’ve decided to do it. I’m not a quitter; in fact, I’ve rarely given up on anything that matters to me during my (insert your Satchel Paige age here) years on this dear planet, but I feel I’ve got to make an exception. At least for a little while. Blogging has been such a great release for me. It’s helped me stay current; it’s kept me thinking; it’s kept […]

Pride and Prejudice: Which One and Why?
This is my favorite book of all time. It’s my mother’s copy, which she lent to me and will never get back. I love that it cost 45 cents. I love that it has my mother’s original highlights in it. She studied English and Literature, and I do pay attention to the notations when I read it. Nothing today costs 45 cents, not even a postage stamp (that will cost you 46 cents)…but perhaps you could get a piece of […]

Called Out for Laziness
Slap. Slap. Slap. Splash water on your face. Grab a LARGE CUP of COFFEE. Prepare for the interaction again. * * * (Microsoft Word): Girl, where have you been? You haven’t been playin’ with my keys for a while. What? You on holiday? (Me): Apparently. (Microsoft Word): You are getting lazy, girlfriend. Why haven’t you been stroking my letters? Writer’s block? (Me): No…it’s just … I’ve been kinda busy. (Microsoft Word): Sounds like an excuse to me. (Me): Well, I […]

The Golden Hour
The Golden Hour, this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge, was photographed in Duck, North Carolina in the Outer Banks, as the sun was beginning to set. We had eaten at one of our favorite restaurants, Aqua, and then headed to the deck and the lawn to take in the setting sun. It doesn’t get much more golden than that. Filed under: On Life Tagged: Aqua, Duck, North Carolina, Outer Banks, Postaweek, setting sun, The Golden Hour, the Outer Banks, Wordpress […]

A Letter from A (Male) Reader
I was so flattered last night by an email my husband received from his friend, Bob Cusack. An old college friend, Bob is the managing editor of The Hill, which makes his comments to me even more special, because he is a successful writer, editor, and a member of the Screen Actors Guild. His words to my husband last night were touching, and he has permitted me to share them with you today. Thanks, Bob. When I read something like […]

Crazy Names in Fiction
Hello, Readers. I’m back from vacation, but only 3/4 of the way through “The Art of Fielding,” which I had hoped to finish on my trip. I guess that’s a good sign—we had a lot of fun on vacation, and only a limited amount of reading time. Ironically, I had started it pre-move and during the end of the semester like a dummy. I can’t get anything done during those busy and hectic times, so I tabled the novel. I […]

Imitation is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery
I blog. I Facebook. I Tweet. I Instagram. I even occasionally YouTube. But lately, I’ve done a lot of pinning on Pinterest. As someone who enjoys magazines–from magazines about fashion, home, travel, and writing–Pinterest is a great way to “collect” ideas electronically. Don’t get me wrong, though. I have still spent a fortune on home decorating magazines. The house we’ve moved into is 40 years old and has been lovingly and beautifully restored on the inside. I love the character […]
