On Happiness—Duh?

My travel writing class is watching “Eat, Pray, Love” this week. We are taking a little respite from reading travel stories to watching one (though I am having them read an excerpt from her book as well). The point I am trying to make is this: Don’t watch a film about traveling if you are not traveling. It will only make you want to travel, and then you’ll be miserable because you’ll be wishing you could experience something new and […]

And So It Is With Love…

Today, I was having a moment of deep thought about love. As I am one who pins on Pinterest, there are a lot of great quotes about love. I pin them. There are quotes about the inspiration of love, of God as love, of the hurt of loving someone and losing him, of parental love, of passionate love, and so it goes. I recently watched the film “Life of Pi.” This allegorical story, as told by Pi to a potential […]

The Case of the Missing Racquet: A Conversation with My Daughter

I pull into the driveway from work with my windows down only to hear the cries of my daughter’s frantic, desperate words as she meets me at the car. “I can’t find my racquet.” Tennis lessons started 10 minutes ago; it is only the second session. I had been stuck in traffic and my daughter had stayed late at school for Yearbook Club. We had talked on the phone, and I had instructed her to be fully ready when I […]

Baseball, An Airplane, And A Writer=”One Summer”

On the eve of the release of Bill Bryson’s latest book, he stood before a crowd at Stevenson University—humbled, excited, and pleased—to talk to students, faculty, and staff members about his works, of which there are many. So gracious was he, that he didn’t even begin his talk by speaking about himself; after being introduced, he simply opened up the floor for questions. The audience had many. The anticipation for his new book entitled “One Summer: America 1927” is something […]

Growing Pains

“As you become more clear about who you really are, you’ll be better able to decide what is best for you —the first time around.” ~ Oprah Winfrey So, check it out—I’m in my forties, and I’m still learning. Over the past several months, going back almost a year, I’ve learned a lot of things about others and myself that have made me stronger as a person, and more in touch with who I am. I know what I will […]

Sharing Poetry Is Like Being Naked.

I like to consider myself a writer AND a poet. I’ve had a couple of poems published, so I know that feeling of baring oneself. Truly, it’s scary to share one’s poetry. Yes. I am much more apt to share something less personal—a story I’ve worked on or a silly little blog post I’ve written. But poetry is just so intimate. It’s our pen or our little fingers typing on the keys, and the thoughts that emerge are mostly personal […]

Chestertown Book Festival — Talking Books!

Tomorrow I’ll be one of many authors at the Chestertown Book Festival on the Eastern Shore in Maryland. If you’ve never visited, tomorrow might be a good time to take a day trip. Lines and Patterns and Trees—Oh My!

Borrowing the title and twisting it a little from “The Wizard of Oz,” today’s WordPress photo challenge involves lines and patterns, and for me, trees. Oh my! This photo was taken in December at Pine Valley Farms near Westminster, Maryland. My family and I have been going there to cut down our Christmas tree for years. And somehow, we always get beautiful weather for the excursion. The tree farm is absolutely picturesque, and this farm epitomizes today’s challenge.   Filed […]

Disengage and Liberate Yourself

I was teaching class when Christina walked in, a little frazzled, and quite sorry for being late. She is rarely late. She quickly explained why she was tardy: There had been a car accident on Greenspring Valley Road, and the police had shut it down for a bit. No one could get by. “It’s scary, and it shakes you up,” she said. The members in the class agreed. And then we began to speculate. Could the accident have been a […]
