The Reason Why This Holiday Season
As the author of a sequel to A Christmas Carol, I have always held Dickens’ timeless classic close to my heart. That’s why I was thrilled to experience A Christmas Carol performed in the way Dickens originally intended, at the Olney Theatre. There’s something profoundly special about seeing the story come to life in the very style that the author himself would have recognized.

Dickens didn’t just write A Christmas Carol—he performed it. During his lifetime, he gave dramatic readings of his own work, bringing his vivid characters to life through voice and emotion. Watching Michael Russotto at the Olney Theatre channel that same energy and passion reminded me of the raw magic of live storytelling. The intimate setting, the careful attention to detail, and the spirited performance captured the essence of Dickens’ approach, making it feel as if I were transported back to the 19th century, experiencing the tale through the lens of its original creator.
My love for this Christmas classic ghost never fades, and it’s the reason why I wanted to continue the legacy of A Christmas Carol with my novella, From Humbug to Humble: The Transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge. Watching the performance at the Olney Theatre was both inspiring and humbling. It reinforced why this story endures—it’s not just about the characters, or the themes of redemption, but about the way the tale connects with the heart of anyone who hears it. There’s a reason A Christmas Carol continues to be retold, reimagined, and brought to life in so many forms. It’s a story that invites us to be better, to hope, and, most importantly, to believe in the possibility of change.

For anyone who loves Dickens, or A Christmas Carol, or simply great storytelling, the Olney Theatre’s performance is a must-see. It’s a reminder that the heart of this story beats stronger than ever.

Gratitude & One Last Signing This Season

I’ve been out in the community a lot lately. It’s been so much fun! As an author, there’s a unique kind of magic that happens when your words find their way into the hands of a reader. It’s a humbling experience to know that something you’ve created resonates with someone enough to spark their imagination, inspire their thoughts, or even just offer them a moment of escape.
Today, I’m reflecting on the immense gratitude I feel toward all the readers who have supported my work. Every comment, review, and message means more than I can express. It’s not just about the books we share; it’s about the connection we form through stories. Readers make the journey worthwhile—they give purpose to the late nights, the edits, and the self-doubt that every writer experiences.

So, to everyone who has picked up one of my books, whether it was by chance or because you’ve followed my work from the beginning—thank you. Your support, your engagement, and your belief in the power of stories are what keep me going. You are the reason I write. And for that, I am endlessly thankful.
I look forward to many more stories together.
Last event of the season is Sunday, December 1 from 11 am – 1 pm at Park Books in Severna Park, Maryland, for an open signing.
Hope to see you and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Anna’s Tuscan Christmas – Novella 2
I’ve been thinking about this story a lot lately. This little short novella I wrote a few years ago called Anna in Tuscany haunts me a little. Not in a bad way, but in a good way. Giving these characters more page time and offering Anna a truly happy ending with more adventures seems like the thing to do.

As well, I decided I’m going to do it in a different way. I’m going to write the pages here, with you. I’ll post each chapter on my blog as I write it, that way you can see how this process goes.
So here’s my warning: what you are reading here is the draft. It’s me getting the story down on paper (or on my blog). And so, what is here may end up being the final story, or it may not be. I take great pains to edit my work, sometimes taking more time to edit than to write.
But, this should be a fun exercise. So here we go.
Anna is going to celebrate her first Christmas in Siena in her apartment with her neighbor, Matteo, an older gentleman who recently lost the love of his wife after decades of marriage, and Matteo’s grandson Nicolo, with whom Anna is now in a relationship (see the end of the story of Anna in Tuscany).
So, here’s what I’ve got for Chapter 1 of the novella. If you have any ideas for me and what you’d like to see happen with the characters, feel free to put them in the chat. I honestly have no idea where this is going (that may be a light fib; I do have a little inclination of where it’s going)…but I still LOVE feedback.
Enjoy Chapter 1.
xx,
Stephanie

Chapter 1
Danielle, my editor, had been texting me for an hour, and I hadn’t responded. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to talk to her, it was that I honestly fell asleep in the middle of the day. Besides, it was a Saturday, and I wasn’t expecting to hear from her. Nicolo and I had been out late with friends after dining with Matteo. We drank too much good Italian wine. I woke up, had a very late breakfast, and my eyelids felt heavier than normal, so I went back to bed on this rainy, cold late October day. I was tired, it was as simple as that. Danielle had sent me traveling for the last ten days in Umbria, and I only returned yesterday morning. It was so good to be back in my own bed.
It’s a funny thing, travel. Those ten days away from Siena made me realize how much I missed Nicolo. He hadn’t been able to get time away from his patients, and so he stayed while I traveled and wrote the article.
Drawing nearer to him over the last many months has kept my heart feeling full. I won’t deny that I wasn’t still scared to enter into a new relationship, especially one with someone who lives and works here in Italy. However, little by little, the fear has waned. I was the one who insisted that we take it slowly. I couldn’t bear to put myself into another romance that was destined to fail. And so I’ve moved along cautiously.

I know that nothing would make him happier than to see Nicolo and me together and as madly in love as he and Lenora were madly in love. I wrote Matteo’s words on the small chalkboard in my kitchen. Follow da heart. He did it with Lenora, I know. His love for her was like crazy mad love. You know, the kind you see in movies when people can’t help but smile every time they’re near the one they adore. And the magic of it was that it never faded over the course of their lives. In fact, I believe he was more in love with her when she died than he was when they were in the early, magical phases of their relationship.
Nicolo has made me smile, ever since we started to fall in love. He’s the kind of person I can imagine waking up to every day, possibly every day of the rest of my life.
But I have baggage. Heartbreak baggage. It’s hard to trust that your heart will never break again, even when all signs point to it being true. I don’t think Nicolo would intentionally break my heart, but we all know things happen. The two previous men I had serious relationships with started out happy with me, too, but both relationships ended with me in tears and them moving on to something else. You can only nurse a heart back to health so many times.
Then there’s the issue of residency. My home is in the States. I’m only supposed to be in Italy for the year writing these articles for the magazine about the regions of Italy. Stanley Tucci is recording a show here, and on one of my travels to Bologna, I saw his crew setting up his shot. I didn’t get a peek at him, unfortunately. Funny that we have a common love for Italy in our bones, and one we want to share with people back home.
I begin to type a response text to Danielle: Just got your text. Sorry I’m so delinquent in getting back to you. Actually took a nap. What’s up?
I wait a second for her reply. Then…I have an idea for something to cover. Something different. Call me and we can chat, Santa Baby.
She always does this. She gives me a clue, teases me about what the next piece is going to be about.
And now I know.
She’s going to have me write a story that has something to do with Christmas.

The Most Fun Aspect of Authorhood: Upcoming Events for the Holidays + Book Clubs
Thank you to Wildberry Farm & Market for hosting me in the Author Tent today at their lovely farm in Crownsville! If you haven’t visited yet, put it on your list. They have events coming up that are listed on their website. It was so much fun to meet new people, chat about books and Dickens and writing, and greet dear friends who stopped by. I always say this is the most fun aspect of authorhood—getting out in the community and meeting folks. I just love it! (And a big THANK YOU to my husband, who is my right hand supporter, and who doesn’t mind getting in his Scrooge costume with me.)

To that end, here are the events we have scheduled as we move into the holidays:
The week before Thanksgiving, on Saturday, December 23, I’ll have a booth at St. John the Evangelist on Ritchie Highway from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. for their annual Advent Market Celebration. They’ll have Advent wreaths, handmade crafts and artisan vendors, live music and caroling, food trucks, kids’ crafts, petting zoo, pony rides, and Santa! I’ll have all my books and my newest Prayer Journal that I wrote over the summer.
Two weeks later, I’ll be at my favorite local bookstore PARK BOOKS & LITLAB on Sunday, December 1 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. We’ll have all the books on hand, and I’ll be in my Dickens costume, of course. It’s the holidays!

My last event will take place with my senior friends over at Brightview in Severna Park! The sweet folks over there have read two of my books for their Book Club, so I am returning the favor by just going over and spending time with the ladies of the club. It will be Dickens-inspired (because why not?) and we’ll do a craft, too. Can’t wait for that.
If you or your Book Club is interested in reading any of my books, I’m available to attend your Book Club, whether it’s in person or via a virtual meeting if you are not in Maryland. I’m happy to attend, and would love to meet you and the readers in your Book Club!
Thanks for all the support, especially to those who visit us when we are out and about in the community. I couldn’t do it without you all. You truly inspire me to keep writing.

31 Days of Frocktober Fashion
Well, I did it this year…all the way through. All 31 days.
What did I do, you ask?

I posted one outfit each day for 31 days for the annual FROCKTOBER fashion challenge on Instagram to raise awareness for breast cancer. (You can follow me on Instagram at stephanieverniwrites).
I’ve always been a fan of fashion and clothes, so I put together some outfits for fun. I don’t make money doing it–in fact, I’m trying to urge others to donate to their favorite breast cancer organization to help fight this awful disease. More than ever, I know women who are bravely in the fight to beat cancer, specifically of the breast. And so, I felt it was something I could do to further call attention to it.
So, here they are…all 31 outfits. Be kind. I’m not a model. I’m just a regular, petite (5’1″) woman who enjoys having fun with clothes.
And also, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
xx,
Stephanie

They Say You Can’t Go Back
They say you can’t go back, but I don’t believe that’s true. This weekend I revisited my grandparents’ stomping grounds, and it was a moving and beautiful experience. I was very close with them, and sadly, my grandfather died at 63 of Leukemia. My grandmother passed when she was 74 from bladder cancer. I was 13 and 26 respectively when they died. I spent a lot of time in Cedar Grove, NJ, especially when my grandfather was dying that summer; my mom, brother, and I lived there (our home was in Maryland), so I felt connected to the place. I also lived there when I was little, and if you’ve read my novel BENEATH THE MIMOSA TREE, you know that story was inspired by my grandmother’s next door neighbors, particularly a boy named Michael, who I played with in my formative years.

I visited both the homes I knew as a kid and where my mom and her sister grew up, and then Town Hall, where my grandmother was the Town Clerk. The final stop was St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, where my mother and father were married 60 years ago (we just celebrated their anniversary this summer), and where the services for both my grandparents and great-grandparents were held when they passed.

It was an emotional day, especially because I had just left a Celebration of Life for my uncle on my dad’s side of the family. Being with family makes you realize how special they are and how we should spend more time together…and how fleeting time is.

I’m lucky because I have many of my grandmother’s artifacts that she gave to me before she died, including two rings that I cherish. Her Christmas decorations will be coming out of their boxes soon, and as I’m displaying them, I’ll be thinking of her, my grandfather, my own family, and all the special times we shared.

We celebrated their anniversary this summer with our family.

On the drive home, soon after we left, I saw a big cross in the sky…I know it was a sign.

xx,
Stephanie

Standing at the Crossroads
So here I stand, at the crossroads, trying to decide how much more of myself I have to give to these book projects I work on year after year. Since 2012, I’ve written 9 works of fiction and 1 textbook, to very good reviews, for which I am thankful. It’s been a whirlwind. I’ve loved being a storyteller, and I’ve loved the people who have supported me. The support has been the sweetest part of it all.

The battle, truthfully, has to do more with book marketing than it has to do with actually writing the freaking books. I love building a good story. To use a slang expression, it’s my jam. Writing the books is my passion. Book marketing is my nemesis.
Additionally, for some reason Instagram will not let me grow. At all. I gain 10 followers, they take away 12. On repeat. This has been happening for well over a year now. I’ve reached out for help and have received none. When you’re an indie, you rely on reach, and my reach has been stifled for some reason. I can’t for the life of me figure it out. It’s left me feeling somewhat defeated. And when you can’t reach a customer service agent to speak with at all, it becomes an even more infuriating and miserable experience. You’re just left hanging in the void.
Book marketing also leaves you vulnerable…you don’t want to have to rely on help from others, but you have to rely on help from others…we can’t do it alone. Having people read your books and write reviews or share them on their social media helps immensely, but begging folks to do this just isn’t in my nature. I’ve sort of come to peace with this philosophy: I write them and put them out there and see what happens. Some people are so incredibly helpful and offer to help without fail. I think of them, my loyal readers, and those who tell me how much they love the books, and it makes me not want to give up the battle.

Unfortunately, I’ve felt this defeatist attitude before with regard to social media, and happily, I’ve powered through it, but for some reason, it feels a little different this time, which is really troubling, because I think I’ve just written my best book. I believe THE ONES CLOSEST TO YOU has merit and lessons and a certain amount of charm. Some readers have told me it should be made into a movie. But when you don’t have the reach to tell people about it, sadly everything suffers, including your vision and attitude.
And so I stand here, looking left, looking right, feeling isolated in this venture, unsure as to what my next step will be. I’m at a complete loss for direction, at a complete loss in general.
How’s that for honesty.

Book Launch Today: The Ones Closest to You Now Available
Well, here I am. I’m back.

Now Available
For the last month, I’ve been diligently working to make The Ones Closest to You a book you will enjoy reading. And now I can tell you that it’s out of my hands and into yours.
It’s a relief to let it go, trust me on this. I am so happy that it’s done.
This little graphic depicts the main characters and how I think each one of them looks:

The first questions people ask after you publish a novel is, what are you working on next?
Well, you might be surprised by the answer to that question.
I’m working on finishing up a Prayer Journal and a non-fiction inspirational book about life lessons. I’m excited to sink my teeth into both of those projects.
As for now, I will wait to hear what you think of The Ones Closest to You. Writing this novel allowed me to tap into my experiences working in the fields of baseball and journalism. It was a pleasure to write this story, especially the character of mafia dame Rosa Manetti; she may have been my favorite character I have ever written.
Here’s the blurb for THE ONES CLOSEST TO YOU
It’s 1956, and rumors begin to swirl: the Brooklyn Dodgers may leave New York for California. As a prominent feature writer for The News, Veronica DeMarco is a woman on the move. She also just signed a book deal with a publisher. Veronica shares an apartment with her older sister, Essie, who suffers from polio. In light of her painful condition, Essie stays at home while Veronica goes to work to pay the bills. When Veronica is introduced to Perry Spada, the new sportswriter who covers the Dodgers, they fall in love. But things are never simple. When the editor of The News and old family friend, Robert Barone, assigns Veronica a story about Rosa Manetti, New York’s infamous, incarcerated mafia dame, Veronica not only writes about Rosa’s troubled past, but also unearths secrets about her own family that have been kept from her. These secrets create a toxic relationship between Veronica and Essie, one that may not be repairable. In the process, Veronica learns that maybe she and Rosa aren’t too dissimilar.
Available via Amazon.com via this link. Coming to Barnes & Noble later this week.
Enjoy!
xx,
Stephanie

Well, I’ve been absent for a bit. That’s because I’ve been working on getting my latest novel, The Ones Closest to You, in your hands. After two years of writing and polishing, the novel will be released in August.
As I always do, I’ll be booking book clubs for the fall. If your group would like to read this novel, I am more than happy to attend your bookclub, either in person if you live locally, or virtually if you live afar.
