Just a Touch of Fall

We aren't the only ones left confused by this chaotic weather. The newly planted trees in my yard are having a hard time adjusting. First losing their leaves and now attempting to grow new ones. They must think it's already spring... Related posts: Teaching a Creative Writing Class How did I find myself teaching a creative writing class?...

Two Separate Paths

Two paths and a looking glass.A response to a post.

Ben Marble and I met when I was still in Junior High. He was a year older than me, and while we knew each other from school, our friendship really began at Lagoon, a theme park nestled at the base of the mountains in Farmington, Utah.

Some time ago, Ben posted about me on his blog.

Before I can talk about where we’ve gone, it might be helpful to tell you more about where we came from. My only caveat is that all of this is being filtered through the cloudy haze of memory...

Learning to Swim

It’s November!

It’s been months since I’ve posted to my blog. To be honest, I’ve been struggling lately. So much has been going on in my life, both good and bad, and it’s been hard to find the words. I’ve thought about posting. I even logged in several times and stared at the empty space where my words were supposed to go.

Nothing came.
The well appeared to be dry.
But in truth, I was drowning.

What was I supposed to do? Just write?

As you can probably tell by my last post, my thoughts have...

Politics and Writing

Before we go any further, there’s something you should know about me. I often think aloud, testing my thoughts as I speak them. In this way, it’s important to note that I see conversations as a two-way communication system where we each get to say what’s on our mind, but we reserve the right to be convinced of the other point of view. This, to me, is an important distinction because my wife likes to call my discussions “lecture-mode,” but really, I’m just a passionate person. I do still value...

What I think about a female Doctor Who

I don’t really like that the new regeneration for The Doctor is female.

What? A female Doctor Who?!

I didn’t like it with The Master, but I wasn’t aware of what his other regenerations were. (Before he showed up as a rocket-stealing old man, that is.) If it was just one random gender flop after a long string of male versions, I consider it to be a cheap gimmick. Nothing more.

If your instant reaction is to call me a misogynist, please hear me out.

I am a father. And as a father of two girls...

Living on 9 Acres

Our house on 9 acres.

When we moved to Texas about two and a half years ago, I was excited to buy a house with a bit of property. 9 acres! This was a huge step up from our tiny suburban homestead on a third of an acre in Clinton, Utah. Looking back now, I can see just how unprepared I was for the task.

9 acres. It still sounds pleasant. But what I was about to slowly, painfully, realize was that we had moved to a land of scarcity. Many of the conveniences we had taken for granted were no long...

Choosing the Right Title for your Book

What’s in a name, and how do you choose the right title for your book?

I intended to cover this topic in my last post, but I’ve been running into some issues with Cornerstone lately and it looks like most of the section I wrote didn’t end up going live. So, instead of crying over words that have slipped into the ether, I decided I’d just write another post to cover my recent decision to change the titles of my upcoming books.

For those of you who’ve been following along, I was going to releas...

April Writing Update – Distant Worlds

Strap in, folks! It’s time for a writing update.

Why do writers write? Better yet, why do aspiring writers fail to write? And if you really want to push the barrier, why is it that so many people think writing a book is a simple endeavor, something they might do someday if they ever feel like wasting a massive chunk of time?

Oh, hell. Let’s just get it out there! What ever possessed me with this idea that I wanted to be a writer? I’m a failure. A flop. A complete and utter wannabe.

Except, I’...

Homebrew Ginger Ale Soda Product Review

Reviewing the Copernicus Primordial Pop Ginger Ale kit.

After reviewing the traffic for this old post, it’s become very clear that there are people out there who are looking for information regarding this Ginger Ale homebrewing adventure kit.

I know it isn’t about my writing or one of my stories, but making this ginger ale was a lot of fun. It’s also a post about one of my other hobbies, and just like beekeeping, it tells a story about who I am. So, with that in mind, I’ve decided to bring it...
