SHARON BAYLISS - GUEST POST "Themes in the December People" (NEW RELEASE - DESTRUCTION)

Today, I have invited Sharon Bayliss to this site as part of her Blog Tour for her new release, Destruction!
She has kindly offered to talk about the themes relating to her series The December People

Please welcome Sharon and I hope you enjoy her post.

Carolyn

The butterfly...yet another symbol. It stands for re-birth, hope, and change.
When I think about book "themes" it reminds me of high school English class. Who knew I would actually use that info later? :) I'm still waiting to find a practical application for calculus.

Destruction, and all the books in The December People, do have significant themes woven throughout the story. Here are a few:

Darkness and light: The visual and symbolic darkness vs. light comes up constantly. Since Destruction is about dark wizards, they struggle to learn what darkness really means, and it's many different facets are explored.

"We do not believe that light exists in spite of darkness. We believe that light exists because of it.
Darkness is the only fertile ground for light. It is the only garden where light can be sown."

"This darkness didn’t feel frightening. In fact, David couldn’t remember ever feeling so safe. The darkness was the foundation that everything else was built on. The garden where the universe grew. The simplest, most basic thing in existence. And it was spectacular.

He supposed that was the answer that waited for him. That darkness in itself was not evil. Darkness was peace. Potential. Home."

Destruction: Well, that's a no-brainer. :) This concept was important enough that I made it the title. Dark magic is destructive. And, so are other acts, like abuse and rape. The story considers what can actually destroy a person.
"That’s why dark wizards can’t practice. Even if they want to be good, they can’t. It’s too dangerous. Dark magic is about destruction. Breaking things. Breaking people."

"If you want to make a case for magic, why don’t you do something a little more interesting than breaking glass? Anyone can break glass. You don’t need magic. Glass is easy to break. It’s one of its defining qualities. Where’s the challenge? What’s the point?"

"Destruction is easy. Dark magic is like stabbing someone in the heart. And good magic is like performing heart surgery to fix it. Almost no one can do it."

"Obviously, Emmy is not fine. But you know what, if she doesn’t end up getting herself killed tonight because of you, she will be fine. Eventually. So will Samantha. They can heal. You can’t."
Love: The story is not a romance, but I still think that love and family are some of the most important themes. Love is what keeps the dark characters from truly becoming evil. In the story, we have "talismans." A talisman is basically is a person who loves you and who you love, and that keeps you from evil. I believe that kind of magic is the real deal.
"He said only people can be talismans, and those talismans work. They are the most powerful kind of magic."
"I knew the magic inside me was a bad thing. But if I had never met you, I don’t know what would have happened. When I fell in love with you… it was like the gap inside me wasn’t as big anymore. I could cope. The whole world looked different."

Spirituality and Religion: The wizards in the story are Baptist, and have to deal with the complexity of understanding themselves within the Christian tradition.

"As nice as it is to think I can cast a spell and protect my family on my own… I feel safer knowing I’ve consulted an expert.”“You mean God?”“Yes, I mean God.”
“What you are is different from what you believe. We can believe whatever we choose to.”“Do you believe in God?”“Yes.”“Do you believe in the Devil?”“Yes.”“Can wizards get into Heaven?”“They have the same chance as everyone else.”“But you don’t know for sure.” “Emmy, no one knows for sure. Not about any of this.”
There are even more themes that I didn't mention, the four seasons, good vs. evil, etc. And each book has new symbols for the season they represent. The summer book involves a lot of symbolism about heat, light, and fire. The spring book has themes of life vs. death and resurrection.

A-Z REFLECTIONS

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/2014/05/the-blogging-from-to-z-april-challenge.html
Wow, it is over. Every year after the A-Z Challenge the blogger world always seems a little flat.
A-Z was certainly a challenge for me this year. I joined Jeremy's (Retro Zombie) team of minions (Tara Tyler and River Fairchild), to help weed out the unwanted from the very large list of participants. Unfortunately, poor Jeremy had medical issues which upset the overseeing of the challenge for him and us three ladies plodded on without a leader, even though the great Arlee Bird (founder of the Challenge), picked up the reigns of our team and we were able to continue our support.  For the challenge, I posted excerpts / teasers from my yet to be finished and a long way off from publishing, new novel, "Forces of Mist," a dystopian sci-fi set in Sydney, Australia, which was a hit with everyone who visited, even receiving a mention from Alex Cavanaugh during the challenge.
All the wonderful comments and the interest have left me feeling very humbled and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all the positive comments and a big thank you to Randi Lee and Patricia Lynn for their visits and encouraging comments every day.
During the month I had a major modem malfunction and had to purchase a new one. I also had conflicts with "Windows" which decided not to download updates for my computer  (Windows 7), still fighting with this one. Might need to buy a new lap top in the immediate future. So these problems took up a lot of my time and I was unable to visit the number of blogs I would have liked.
Even so, I endeavoured to reply to every comment and paid back the visits I received each day. Being better organized with my posts this year helped a lot and when my internet had the hiccups I was able to post the prepared material from my mobile, so this made it easier.
Overall, I am a happy participant of the A-Z Challenge and look forward to taking part again next year.

April has come and gone, the major event being the A-Z Challenge, which I successfully completed with the hardship of a malfunctioning modem and a crippled computer.
With most of my posts previously completed before the start of the event, I was able to fulfill my obligations, but would have liked to have visited more bloggers than I was able to.
The bright side is I received positive feedback for my future release of Forces of Mist from my excerpts and teasers posted throughout A-Z and I expanded my writing, using the criteria of the boundaries set by the challenge.
I also completed lots of writing during the month towards the finishing the project, which of cause made me very happy.

"Z the last letter in the A-Z Challenge! Wow, I actually made it to the end!

Below is my last teaser / excerpt from "The Forces of Mist," a New Adult, Dystopian Sci-fi  I am working on. Hopefully, it will be ready for release this time next year.

Zero hour is upon us,” Walker announced to the survivors gathered around him. “This new undertaking, if it succeeds will be the turning point in this war. We as a species may be lucky enough to survive.”
He looked around the cavern, at the people before him, the familiar faces of the onedunder his command since the be ginning of this war were mixed in amongst other survivors they had picked up along the way.
They had also taken in a new group.  Mist Warriors from the enemy, had joined their ranks and had proven to be valuable assets.
Thanks to Jackson’s intervention, warriors like himself, who believed their race had been savage and brutal in their dealings with the human race, were also gathered before him, showing a potential to succeed and if the Xantippe device worked, their lives may perhaps change the future of the planet.

Ancient Blood (A Novel of the Hegemony) 20362946 byBrian McKinley, Ambrosia Arts (Editor) Ancient blood
A Novel of the Hegemony

AN IMMORTAL LOVE
Avery Doyle loves vampires; he’s read every novel, seen all the movies, and researched the folklore. When his first one-night-stand, Caroline, turns out to be a true vampire on the run, he jumps at the chance to leave his ordinary life and join her as a “child of the night.”

The honeymoon ends, however, when Caroline’s brutal Creator Sebastian enslaves them on his island estate and Avery must confront the dehumanizing reality behind his dreams.

AN IMMORTAL ARISTOCRACY
In order to survive, Caroline and Avery take their place as servants in Sebastian’s household during a gathering of the most powerful vampires on Earth, the Hegemony, and soon find themselves involved in the myriad intrigues and deceptions that form the night-to-night existence of The Order.

A society of wealth, power, and inhuman decadence whose existence is protected by human complicity and disbelief, The Order is the immortal aristocracy hidden behind the giant corporations and political leaders of the world.

IN MORTAL DANGER
Sebastian, however, has a plan that will change The Order forever and shatter human civilization. To avoid this terrible fate, Avery and Caroline will not only have to defy the most powerful creatures on Earth, but also confront the darkest aspects of themselves. For in the world of the Hegemony, even victory may cost them their souls…

MY  TEASER:

I saw headlights pass in my mirror, but couldn't tell if it was a cop or not. The street dead-ended at a high school, and - even with my improved night vision - it was very hard without headlights. The parked cars on either side made for a wonderful obstacle course; I just prayed no pedestrians were out.

LETTER "Y" - A-Z CHALLENGE

"Y," the second last letter of the A-Z Challenge and as previously posted throughout the challenge, I have another excerpt from "Forces of Mist."

“Yeah, and you expect her to lead our team?” Roberts stood with an exasperated look upon his face. Clearly, he was not happy to be part of her team.

“Sarah, have you heard any of my instructions so far?” Walker asked.

“Sorry sir, I was just lost in thought.” she answered.

“Great and you’ve chosen her to lead us!” Roberts almost yelled his retort.

“Roberts, stand down, that is an order! My decision is final, Sarah is perfect for this task and she is my choice to lead this team!” Walker injected.

Jennings stood off to the side of the other three and silently watched them as Roberts argued his disgust in the Commander’s decision. He had worked with Sarah in the past and had no qualms about the decision.

Roberts looked towards him, hoping to find support, but he made no effort to voice his opinion.

“So, with this resolved, you will be on your way immediately! I want a report on where you have set up camp and of any alien activity you encounter by nightfall tomorrow evening. Ensure you only use the wireless when necessary to contact headquarters, do not waste the battery for any insignificant reports.” Walker looked all three of them directly in the eyes, while giving his last order.

The men headed to their vehicle, leaving Sarah standing alone with the Commander.

“Sarah, be careful of Roberts, don’t press him unnecessarily. That man is a walking time bomb, but his skills will be valuable to this mission.”

“Yes sir.” she answered, a little stiffly,

“By the way, if Jackson shows up, make sure that Roberts and Jennings are not aware of his liaison with our command. He is a valuable asset and it is of great importance his identity is not compromised.” Walker laid a gentle hand on Sarah’s shoulder, then lent forward and gave her a quick fatherly hug. “Take care and come back safely."

“Yes, sir.”

Sarah turned picked up Spank and walked over to her old faithful truck, settled the rest of her supplies into the vehicle, started the engine and led the small patrol out through the tunnel.

LETTER "X" - A-Z CHALLENGE

AJ Lauer: Naturally Sweet
Pam Margolis: An Unconventional Librarian

"X," I think is the hardest letter to post in the Challenge, especially if you are posting an excerpt / teaser from a novel to be released in the future. The easy way to get around it is to have a character with a name starting with "X."

Unfortunately I don't.

Below is my "X" post for the A-Z Challenge from "Forces of Mist," I hope you like it.

Xerox machines were lined up against one wall, some whole, others in pieces amongst old computers and gaming consoles. Other machines, unrecognizable, were organized in various bundles awaiting dismantling or had been hurriedly broken apart and were laying in piles on the floor.

Finding the older technology was difficult, but by the looks of the room the technicians had been busy reassembling devices with analogue capability which would not be detected by the enemy.

Jackson left Sarah’s side and walked over to the table holding the new weapon. The technicians halted their work, looking at him suspiciously.

The room fell into silence.

It was obvious the workers felt threatened by Jackson’s presence.

Sarah joined him and asked one of the workers directly, “Have you discovered out how the device is operated?”

An eager tech enthusiastically answered her question, describing what they had learned from studying the hard drive Sarah and Roberts had brought back from the settlement.

“They had named the machine Xantippe. We discovered it was a town in Western Australia which was named after the wife of the great Socrates.” The technician divulged with excitement. “You do know who Socrates was, don’t you?”

Sarah, a look of confusion upon her face tried to remember the name. She had heard it before, but couldn’t recall who the man was.

The technician, frustrated by her silence divulged the answer, “He was one of the world’s greatest philosophers. Plato and Xenephon were his students. The man was a genius and brought about the scientific method of hypothesis!”

Sarah looked at the tech dumfounded by his enthusiasm and felt demoralized by his intelligence.

LETTER "W" - A-Z CHALLENGE

Heather M. Gardner: The Waiting is the Hardest Part
AJ Lauer: Naturally Sweet
Pam Margolis: An Unconventional Librarian

"W" - the end is almost here, only three more days of the A-Z Challenge and it will come to a close for another year. The hardest three letters are yet to come.

I have yet another teaser / excerpt from "Forces of Mist."

With a shrug, Sarah turned her head, started the engine and made her way back to base.

Replaying her encounter over and over inside her head, she had mixed feelings about having a second encounter with this powerful stranger. With him having a natural force of such intense power, enabling him to lift her vehicle across such a wide valley and landing it without damage on the other side, was a miracle. How would humanity ever be able to win this battle?

Ensuring she was not being followed and taking precautions to turn off her communication devices, Sandy approached the hidden base just before sunset and was welcomed inside by one of her friends, who was on duty in the hanger.
Kara moved over to Sarah as she went through the necessary protocols, shutting down her vehicle and gathering up her equipment, “Where the hell have you been? The commander is going ape shit! You were supposed to report three hours ago!” she screamed, angrily.
“Well, hi there Kara! Thanks for being so concerned for my butt.”
Kara smiled at her friends comment and gave her an affectionate punch in the shoulder.
“I think it is best if I report directly to the commander about my experience, and reasons, so I will have to leave you hanging. Hey, but it’s all good, I think.”
With this comment hanging heavily in the air between them, Sarah walked away. She headed to her quarters, to gather a change of clothes. She wanted to use the community showers before making her report. She needed some time to work out exactly what she wanted to divulge and whether or not to share her experience with the commander. She knew Kara would understand why she walked away.
When she emerged from the shower Commander Walker was waiting in the hall. “Sarah, you have not officially checked in, why?”
“Can we go somewhere to talk?”

Laura Howard lives in New Hampshire with her husband and four children. Her obsession with books began at the age of 6 when she got her first library card. LETTER "V" - A-Z CHALLENGE

Tina Downey: Life is Good
Damyanti Biswas: Amlokiblogs

Heather M. Gardner: The Waiting is the Hardest Part
AJ Lauer: Naturally Sweet
Pam Margolis: An Unconventional Librarian

"V" has been the hardest letter to post in this challenge so far. Hey, but I worked it in!

See how, in the excerpt / teaser below from "Forces of Mist," my yet to be released dystopian sci-fi, set in Sydney, Australia.

 "Vanquishing mist!

"What?" Sarah questioned.

"Vanquishing mist, it is extracted from the glands of the females of my race. The elders must have extracted it from thousands of our women. The majority would have died from the extraction process. What have they done?"

"Jackson, do you mean the leaders of your species have deliberately killed thousands of your kind to create a poison to kill us?" Walker questioned.

"That's insane." Sarah exclaimed. "Why would they do such a thing to their own people?"

"We are expendable. The war with the human race and being able to control this planet is of utmost importance for some of my kind. They would sacrifice the lives of some to gain the outcome they want." Jackson replied. " Why, do such a disgusting thing I don't understand." he was devastated. A broken look overtook his handsome features and he seemed to retreat unto himself.

Walker quickly intervened.
