Mysteries
Yes, dear reader, I've been hard at work on those shorts and the next installation of Gods Fail. I will have to say that I've also been thinking about formulating a proper mystery. Proper as in something I'd like.
What all this means is that my favorite mystery until recently was Chronicle of a Death Foretold . The beauty of this novella cannot be overstated. Nor can the indictment of an entire city. But it has been hard to find another novel like it. In fact, I have almost completely given up on finding just such a book [2].
In fact, I've almost completely given up on finding such a book. But winter has descended, that quieting, sometimes disquieting white crystals falling from the sky and changing the entire land, slowing down time, really.
But whatever one may think of the snow, it led me to finding a mystery story that seemed made for the ages. Written, of course, by Algo , it is about a detective trying to actively subvert the system. This makes for some great reading, IMO, and is loads better than the woe is me detective of the current dark trend [3].
One story, for example, has the detective finding a high rolling financier dead. The story does not go as you would think, and the real murderer is not found. Beautiful stuff, and much of it borderline seditious. Perhaps it's because of this that I like it. Have you enjoyed this new series?
[1] Oh, I know this is more an indictment of me more than anything else...
[2] 2666 may be an example, but I wouldn't call it a mystery, not in the sense that I mean.
[3] Or, for that matter the ones hinting at greater ills, but with wrong-headed individual acts.

Have a Guest Post Over at SFF WORLD
It's a brave world out there, and as we all think on whether MAGA is gonna happen and whether words have meanings as well as any policy consequences, I continue to see a general flailing from those who would oppose, and those who would look for a better world. On the matter of Automated Warfare, I have a few things to point out in
this article over at SFF World.
Of course, like most articles, it's no where near complete, and for such an indepth subject, it could never be. To that end, I'll continue to add to it on this blog or on my medium page. But take a look at this article for now and let me know your thoughts.

the Labyrinth of Souls
In light of all that has happened in the world today, and what looks like increasing chances of strife for the future, I'm here to say that Labyrinth of Souls is the perfect book for what's next. Providing insight into our society, it's a good scifi story that any one can enjoy. So, for your edification,
here is a video with the first chapter
(done by Clyde Northrup) as per the audiobook which will be out by next year. For now, you can have the
ebook, which is here
. Below is the basic premise of the book:

A Great Book and the Zeitgeist
Just finished reading
Abyssinian Chronicles
. Wow, what a book. Of course, I always reserve the right to change my mind as the filter of tie weakens a book (as it has done to many)[1], but this book definitely deserves more acclaim than it has had. On the back page it claims to be an African version of 100 years of Solitude, or Midnight's Children. I find that to be an odd comparison, even if I understand the marketing behind it.

Best Books of 2016
Again, this is a list of best books read in 2016, not published in 2016, since I (and no one I know) reads that way. So, here goes:
Abyssinian Chronicles : Okay, it's about Uganda, and many of you may think, dafuq do I care about that small nation? But this is about so much more, to include colonial and post colonial and refugee and populist and religious and you name it strands of thoughts and the power behind them on an individual and national and international basis. I moved it to my best books of the 20th century list . Yeah, it's that good. Check it out.
Satanic Verses : This book seems to reach out to do too much. And it doesn't do them all, and yet I see what it's aiming to do and it's worth a read just for that. Yes, it it's dripping in blood (actual deaths) and yes its controversial, but every citizen of a democratic nation (or who is behind democracy on some level) should read it.
ISIS : Many books on ISIS out there. Some are informative, but most are propaganda made to scare you. Check this book out instead.
Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth : Raw and to the point. Makes me love poetry. Check it out, it's worth it!
No Good Men Amongst the Living : Solid look at the Afghan war with an eye towards hearing the story of those on the side of the Taliban as well as other Afghanis.
Shalimar the Clown : this book has some flaws, what book doesn't?, but it manages to overcome them with a treatise on terrorism. I don't always agree, but it's the most comprehensive one out there. [1]. Good enough to add to my best books of the 21st century books .
Honorable Mentions:
Bastards of the Reagan Era .
Milk and Honey
War Porn
The Sympathizer
[1] This isn't true. I think Ministry of Bombs is better, but I'm in no position to state that too loudly, now am I?

21 Savage and some Flarf poetry (as Youtube Comments)
Ever heard of 21 "This shit slaps harder than my step dad" Savage? Well, this song is good enough with its flow and beat to stick with me for some time. Nevertheless, in my desire to touch up on some zeitgeist, here are the Youtube comments:
This shit makes me want to
sign up for Club Penguin without parent's permission
borrow a pencil and forget to return it
sign my parent permission slip
visit Disney's website without parental permission
make koolaid with out sugar

binge watch a whole series and not watch the last ep
burn my grandma's house down then cash out on the insurance money just to blow it all on a drug addiction

Multiple Versions of a Story
Though I've yet to share it (it hasn't been published yet), I have written a story about a folk tale with multiple endings. As it was so shall it be, but it's my contention that all stories should have multiple endings and be wholly different. For modern novels to want only a single, holy, versions of self (per edition), is beyond silly, IMO. I'll be doing that soon enough.
But it was comforting to hear that the tale of a rabbit and a tortoise had a version where later on, the tortoise was chosen to warn the forest of a fire, but since he was really slow everyone died.

VVitch and witches
First off:
Check out this short story of mine over at Patreon
.
I was watching a video-lecture on witches and thought back to the movie, Witch. As you may or may not know, it wasn't a movie that I particularly liked. The tension was well done, but it wasn't my sort of thing. I think that the main point of contention was how the movie focused on the idea of an evil in the dark woods. Fine. And that can work for many people. But that it chose not to do it with nuance was another reason I didn't appreciate it. Same with how the movie made witches something real and evil, without looking at the human psychology that hates that which lives in the fringes and how that all plays into politics. Not entirely worthwhile, but you should check out the video. It's worth a look.
