On a bright July morning in 1948, a B-29 Superfortress flying a top-secret research mission over Nevada crashes into the calm waters of Lake Mead and sinks, remaining lost for half a century.

It has been nearly a year since five friends – Jag, Kody, Mariah, Tegan and Aari – mysteriously reappeared in a small town in Yukon several weeks after their small plane went down in Northern Canada. All were found in good health but with no recollection of what happened to them after the crash.

A baffling contagion is spreading across the bread-basket of North America destroying vital crops. As this dark shadow marches across the globe, widespread famine and riots bring desperate nations to the brink of war.

These seemingly unrelated events set the stage for a battle between the forces of darkness and those destined to become the ‘bearers of light’. From ravaged fields in the Great Plains to clandestine installations around the world, the Aegis League must race against time to save humanity.

“ . . . Additional reports are coming in of more crop failures in parts of North Dakota, Kansas and Montana,” the news anchor was saying. “For further details, we now turn to our correspondent in Baldwin City, Kansas.”

As the camera cut away to show a man with a microphone standing among burnt crops in a farmer’s field, Jag turned to the others, looking puzzled. “More crop failures? What’s going on?”

Author Grey Francis Releases Bound to a Vampire, First in the Into the Dark Woods #Paranormal #Romance Series

Los Angeles, CA –Author Grey Francis announces the release of Bound to a Vampire, Volume 1 (ISBN 978-1-5023-3800-6), the first erotic paranormal romance novel in the Into the Dark Woods series featuring the vampire trio Cassandra Monteclaire, Killian Monteclaire, and Alastair St. Germaine. A psychologically compelling and literary erotic novel, Bound to a Vampire combines the themes of sexual awakening with paranormal adventure and creates an admirable heroine in Cassandra, who must find her inner strength to combat demons from her past and her future.

Set in modern-day New York, Bound to a Vampire tells the story of Cassandra, a three-hundred-and-sixty-year-old vampire with healing powers. Bonded in an erotic trio with their Protector, the brooding and ardent Alastair, the three live an exciting and dangerous life full of love, decadence, and dark passion. But when Killian suddenly vanishes, Cassandra and Alastair face an ever-changing and threatening world, where they struggle with the loss of their mate while trying to protect the vampire empire from destruction by human armies called Torians. Centuries later, when a close friend of Cassandra’s discovers that Killian is alive and executing members of the allied Sentient organization, Killian becomes a target for elimination. Frequently Asked Questions

Bound to a Vampire is an erotic paranormal romance that takes place in both modern-day New York and 17th century Europe. What inspired you to write a vampire novel set in those times and places?

I wanted to set my novel in the present and in the 17th century, going back in forth through memories, in order to show how the past shapes a vampire after centuries of living. This time-shifting allowed me to show vampires not only living, but being hunted, having love affairs and experiencing great tragedy. I also wanted to take my readers deeper into my characters’ histories, exploring how they became vampires, how they found each other, how they lived, and ultimately how they lost one another. Since the 17th century is one of my favorite time periods, and a dramatic contrast to the times we currently live in, setting the book during that time allows us to understand the past, so we can sympathize with a particular vampire’s motivations and desires.

Bound to a Vampire features the female healer, Cassandra, who is turned into a vampire by the mysterious and powerful Master Vampire, Killian, and who becomes the member of a sexual triad that includes the dark and brooding Protector, Alastair. What’s special about Cassandra and how did you come to choose her as the main character for your first Into the Dark Woods novel?

This genre is dominated by male vampire protagonists. What I wanted to see was a strong female vampire, who is driven by ambition, passion and romance and willing to fight for those she loves. As a 17th century human midwife, Cassandra’s talents were misunderstood and feared, and ultimately she is persecuted as a witch. As a vampire, her former talents are transformed, giving her ability to heal and create life, making her very powerful. She goes from a simple peasant to vampire royalty. Flame haired with an exquisite kind of delicate beauty, Cassandra is spirited, strong-willed, and nurturing. She quickly finds herself in a passionate love triangle with her Sire and her Protector. Cassandra is the perfect compliment to each of them, but her true gift is her ability to bridge the gap between these two powerful males, whose love for one another is dark, tangled and complicated.

There are strong erotic elements, including passages that describe submission and bondage, in Bound to a Vampire. What made you decide to pursue these thematic issues in your Into the Dark Woods series and in this new novel?

When I envisioned my vampires, I saw them as highly sexual creatures. But I didn’t think that vampires would express their sexuality the way most typical humans do. BDSM and the power exchange between a dominant and a submissive rang true to me in terms of the vampires’ natures and their ability to attain nourishment from that exchange. I also think there is a connection between pain and pleasure with vampires. The vampire bite, at least in my books, is both painful and euphoric. The pain some submissives crave, as Alastair does, is a component of that particular crossover. There is also a strong psychological component to BDSM that parallels the emotional bonds within my vampire world. Some vampires, like Killian, are Masters and demand ultimate trust and surrender from their mates. In return, their submissive mates feel protected and ultimately loved. This dynamic felt so organic to me, I believe it was the perfect way to structure the sexual relationships of my vampires.

What do you find the most fascinating about the paranormal romance genre?

There are interesting fluctuations in what creatures are capturing the interests of readers. Recently, I’ve seen a popular rise in books about shape shifters, dragons, sexy demons and angelic warriors. A few years ago, the Fae world was popular. Before that, it was witches. Many writers have been combining a number of different supernatural creatures in their books for years, creating very developed and complex worlds where vampires, shifters, Fae, and others creatures, co-existed to varying degrees of animosity and peace. I find many of them fascinating, and I faithfully follow a number of writers. And yet, I see vampire stories enduring, being recreated, the rules of their worlds ever changing and expanding. For me, the vampire remains as intriguing and sexually charged as he was 30 years ago when I picked up Interview with a Vampire.

What would you like readers to remember most about you and your books?

The characters. They get under our skin and we can’t shake them. What I would like people to remember are the emotional layers that exist between my characters as they develop and evolve. All three main characters go through transformations, be it with through love, sex, power, loss, or reconciliation. Their pain haunts us. Their love grips us. It is these emotional resonances that I hope stay with my readers.

Are you working on a new Into the Dark Woods novel and, if so, what can you tell us about it?

Yes. The second book in the Into the Dark Woods series is called A King in Chains, and it focuses on Alastair and his dynamic yet tumultuous history with Killian. The story also explores Alastair’s present day struggle to move forward as king without Killian by his side, while battling a powerful and malevolent vampire from his past who threatens everything he holds dear. In order to save his kingdom, Alastair must make the ultimate sacrifice for those he loves. That’s all I can say for now!

**Excerpt***

What they had done, Jade could not explain. At first, he felt nothing. He could see them touching him, but it felt like he was watching a film. Sensations started, he began to have an awareness of his limbs. He began to feel heat. At first, he thought his imagination was working overtime—wishful thinking—but then the tingling started. Sensations began to shoot down his arms and down his legs. Hope began to bud in his heart and mind. How could water and a rock heal him? There had to be more to it, he knew. Right now, he didn’t care. With everything he had, he attempted to move a finger or a toe. As he concentrated, he didn’t realize he had begun to speak.

Everyone in the room turned to look at him as he hoarsely said, “Arabella. Arabella.”

Arabella ran to his side as tears streamed down her cheeks. She covered his face with kisses. “Oh, Jade. Say it again. Say my name again.”

He did as she asked. Hoarsely, he croaked, “Arabella. I knew you would come.”

“This is a Christmas miracle,” Nanette whispered as she wiped her eyes.

Jade watched their faces light up as he moved first his fingers and then his toes. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.” It was his first movement in almost a month.

“Arabella, every day, you will do another healing spell until he is as good as new. Elizabeth, call that detective of yours and see if he can pull some strings and get an ambulance out here to move this boy to Wildflower Way. The sooner we get him out of this hellhole the better. And I’m going to inform that nurse that we’re taking our boy out of here. I’ll be right back.” Nanette stormed out the door, as if ready for battle.

Jade’s laugh was a little rusty, but these women made him happy.

After a few moments, the rattled doctor came in and began taking Jade’s vitals in disbelief. Where there had been complete paralysis, now there was some movement. Where there had been silence, now Jade’s hoarse voice rang out.  “Get your hands off me. I heard what you said; you were ready to kill me just because you thought I had nobody who cared anything about me. You bastard!”

The doctor backed away step by step as if plotting his escape.

“How did you do this?” The doctor was absolutely flabbergasted.

“Power, love and faith,” Nanette said quietly. “Remember this, and beware; power that cannot kill, cannot heal. Get out of my sight before I turn you into a toad.”

The doctor wasted no time exiting the room.

It was almost laughable. Arabella sat by his bed and addressed the group. “There’s really no reason for all of you to stay. Why don’t you all go on home and get everything ready. Christmas dinner is waiting on us and we’re having company.” She smiled at Jade. “I will stay with Jade and ride in the EMS vehicle.”

Soon they were alone. Arabella kept her back to him. “I don’t understand it, but I feel unbearably shy.”

“Have you had any good dreams lately?” His hoarse, yet teasing voice caused her to wheel around and face him, her cheeks blazing. “It was more than a dream, wasn’t it? I met you night after night—and the things we did…”

“I intend to do them again…and much more…at the very first opportunity. Assuming everything works as it is supposed to. Come to me, Arabella.” He turned his hand over and held it out to her. With every moment that passed, more improvements in his condition were becoming evident.

When she came within touching distance, he captured her hand and she closed the gap between them. “Would you get me a drink of water?” She felt bad that he had to ask, so she poured water for him and held the glass so he could drink as much as he wanted.
“Now put the glass down and kiss me.” He pulled her to his side.

**** Excerpt***

Eric didn’t know whether to be shocked, offended or just plain flattered. He slowly walked around the nude sculpture that so closely resembled him. He knew how his body looked; he had worked hard to get the muscle definition that he had. And here it was in specific, minute detail. And the look on the face was so obviously that of an aroused man, the hooded eyes – the piercing gaze. The statute was labeled ‘Angel’, by Evangeline Martel. How odd. No one else in Austin knew about his middle name, or how special it was to him. He was flabbergasted. The lightning bolt scar was in the exact place that it was on his body; a product of an eight year old boy and his four wheeler’s run-in with a barbwire fence. But what stood out the most, literally, was the fact that he – – uh, the statute was extremely well endowed. Eric smiled. Someone sure had his measurements down pat!

Damn!
The crowd was coming alive. It was full of guys that knew him, fire guys, city guys, EMT’s – they all knew one another. And they were cutting him no slack. They held nothing back in the hoo-raw department. “Eric, you are our hero!” one of them exclaimed.
“Do you think they’ll ask you to pose for Playgirl?”
Knowing his alma mater was the University of Texas, another one exclaimed. “It’s about time the world knew how long a Longhorn really is!”
“Go look at the other sculpture, Eric,” a faceless voice in the crowd instructed him. So he did. The first piece had surprised him; after all, the sight of one’s own naked body in an unsuspecting place was enough to get anyone’s undivided attention. But what he saw next took his breath away. Obviously, the man was him also; there really was no mistaking that. This one showed him in the throes of coitus; legs in a widened stance, supporting a woman in his arms, her legs wrapped around his waist, obviously fully impaled on his shaft. The woman had her arms around him, hiding her face in his neck, a braid hanging to the middle of her back. Eric was stunned! This was her! The woman of his dreams. He would have recognized that body anywhere – and her hair – it was all so familiar. Eric’s heartbeat was going nuts! This was the most erotic thing he had ever seen in his life! Suddenly, he wished his pants weren’t quite so tight. He refused to look down to see how big of a show he was putting on. He turned to walk through the crowd, intent on finding someone who could point out the artist who had put all of his goods on display. Did she know his dream-girl? Maybe, this was the answer to that midnight yearning that had been about to drive him mad.
He began to be conscious of the stares and whispers of the crowd that encircled him and the pair of bronzes. He turned to look around and WHAM! Jessica slapped the crap out of him! “Looks likes I wasn’t the only one cheating!” Jessica huffed off and Eric rubbed his jaw, glad to see her go. He was much more interested in exactly who the artist was that had carved his extra-large penis for the whole of Austin to see. This Evangeline Martel sure had some explaining to do! He needed to go check his bedroom for very small cameras.
The crowd parted again. But, this time there was someone at the other end of the man-made pathway. They might as well get out of the way, he was coming through. Then, he saw her.
She was just standing there, looking straight at him.
She appeared to be waiting on him.
Did he know her? She seemed familiar. Eric searched his memory, but came up empty. Hell, he wanted to know her! She looked so familiar . . . . .so . . . . .
She was not just beautiful, she was delectable. Wearing a knee length, sequined, midnight blue dress with a low scoop neckline and short sleeves, she was completely and utterly feminine. And that dark hair – so like the woman of his fantasies!
He noticed she was standing close to the Congressman’s wife – Arabella Landale – and it was obvious they were related. They were very similar; in their coloring and in their expression. But the object of his desire, she was different; wonderful, in ways that he could not put his finger on. She was no more than five-six, but perfectly, exquisitely curved.
Their eyes met. And for a moment, he saw hunger and yearning in her gaze. Every cell in his body screamed out for her. There was total recognition in every fiber of his being. He watched her shut her eyes, as if gathering strength. Then, she turned her back on him. Her hair hung in a seductive braid to the middle of her back, the long dark tresses intertwined with dark blue ribbon that was dusted with rhinestones.
That braid! He had just seen that braid! His nighttime princess had that braid!!
The sight caused his gut to wrench, the woman in the second statue – the one that was carved in his arms – making love to him -the woman driving him crazy night after night – – was her! Eric was mesmerized. Then it dawned on him. This was the artist! This must be Evangeline Martel! Somehow, he and this woman had a connection that he couldn’t begin to understand.
Nothing in the world could have prevented him from going to her. He stopped about three feet from her. Oblivious to the crowd he approached her. “There you are.” God, he wanted to lick his lips. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you, sweetheart. Turn around and look at me.”
She stood still one moment longer, her back to him. He hungrily took in her form, from the top of her head, the luscious curve of her bottom, to the small bare feet encased in what looked to him like glass slippers. Then she turned to face him. At first, it seemed as if she was trying to be composed and business like – but then something broke in her expression and she stepped right up to him. Reaching out, she put her small hand on his cheek, caressing it so very lightly. Then she leaned up and whispered in his ear. “Are you real? Or did I conjure you?”
Conjure, that was a word his mother used. He didn’t take the time to analyze the implications. “Oh, I’m real baby. Would you like to pinch me and find out?”

A rosy blush rose from her neck and enveloped her cheeks. “Yes.” The one word answer hung between them. Desire was so thick it could have been cut with a knife.

Much to Eric‘s surprise, she picked up his hand and caressed the palm. Her touch was saying ‘take me’, but her words were saying something else. “I am so sorry; I never meant to hurt you. Was that woman your girlfriend? If you will go get her, I can explain. I can fix this.”
Eric didn’t want her to fix this. What he wanted; was her. But he didn’t intend for anymore of his business to be public knowledge. He whispered where only she could hear. “I need to talk to you. Now. In private.” She seemed to hesitate. “I want to do things to you that no one else needs to see. If you don’t want to shock every person in this room, I would suggest you get us to some place more secluded. Now.” His voice was much gruffer than he intended it to be. His passion was running extremely high.
Eric had never felt so turned on in his entire life. The crowd was dead quiet. They were all straining to hear any word that passed between them. Everyone was aware that Eric McAllister was standing face to face with the woman who seemed to have an intimate knowledge of his body and was brave enough to declare it to the world. She hadn’t moved, so Eric took the initiative. He grasped her hand and led her off to one side and into a conference room, slamming the door behind them. Clenching his hands into tight fists, he fought to keep his hands off of her. But she looked so upset, he stepped back and waited, watching her, giving her time to compose herself.
“You have every right to be angry. I should have thought this through; there are always consequences to our actions. I’ve manipulated your life. Can you ever forgive me?” Closing her eyes, she seemed to be trying to regain control. “I know I owe you an explanation, but you probably don’t want to hear anything I have to say. Suffice it to say, that I am deeply sorry to have caused a problem for you and your girlfriend.”
He had no idea what she was talking about – he liked her kind of manipulation. “She’s not my girlfriend, not anymore, sweetheart.” He couldn’t stop looking at this beautiful woman.

“How did you know what I look like naked, who gave you the photograph?” He didn’t really care; he just wanted to watch her lips form the words as she answered him.
“I didn’t have a picture, I . . . . .I had a dream about you. God, that sounds stupid, doesn’t it?”

“I want you to be comfortable, sweetness. You have a look on your face as if you’re expecting me to crush you. That’s not an ideal mindset to instigate your desire.” He rolled to a sitting position, leaned against the couch, and patted his thigh.

“Here, sit on my lap. We’ll just hold each other for a bit.”

Muscles melting in relief, Keely threw her leg over his and settled onto his lap.

He caressed her arm and spoke softly. “Ready?”

She nodded and glanced over to Baruch. He was trying to focus his eyes.

Keely jumped when Makar’s hands landed on her hips.

“Relax. You’re in charge. Okay?”

She stared into his golden eyes and tried to figure out why she was so damn jumpy. Releasing her breath, she placed her hands on his shoulders and leaned forward. “I’m going to kiss you. Will you do that electrical charge thing again? I need some warning.”

“No, sweets. That was a one-time deal. Lay it on me.”

Moving closer, she felt his palms slide up her back. The moment their mouths touched, she closed her eyes and fell into the most sublime experience imaginable. His lips were soft, his motions gentle, and his tongue warm and inviting. Gradually, she grew bolder and demanded more from the kiss, withdrawing, nipping his full lower lip, and kissing the sting away before starting the intimate exploration all over again. His palms pressed harder against her back, pulling her closer.

Coming up for air, she sighed when her breasts smashed against his chest and he nibbled along her neck. A slight tug on her earlobe sent tingles shooting across her skin. His sensuously accented words had her wiggling on his lap.

“That’s it, sweetness. I smell a slight aroma of violets. Let go, baby. Give us more. Umm, yes. Keep moving your hips. Yes, just like that. Ride me. Ah, you’re making me so hard, Keely.”

EXCERPT:

I knew that the truth in my heart reflected in my old, weary eyes. “Yes, I do. Look, I’m no slick-talking salesman, as you can see. I’m just a scientist and engineer, but I truly believe there is a statistical probability of success. But even if I’m wrong, and our voyage ends up to be pointless, so what? Think of the fun you’ll have. Imagine the excitement and wonders of space travel that come before our long sleep.” I paused to dramatize my resolve and let a burst of quixotic energy erupt from me. “Cherish the adventure!”

It wasn’t her fears that I was battling against, but a lifetime of distrust. My confidence in a successful mission collapsed. “Of course, you have no reason to believe a word of what I’ve told you. You don’t really know me, except through my noted accomplishments. But I can’t disappoint you because I’m only offering friendship and hope.” I pushed my point harder. “Sure, we can die here on Earth. We can die in space. Or we can awaken on a remote and caring world that saves us! We are the captains of our fate, not the Grim Reaper—yet!”

#Amazon finally changes #KindleUnlimited so payout makes more sense

Copied verbatim from Kindle Direct Publishing email…

Subject:

Announcement – KDP Select Global Fund Update & Program Changes

From:

Kindle Direct Publishing

Date:

6/15/2015 9:38 AM

To:

Hello,

Today we have a few exciting announcements to share related to the KDP Select global fund. The first is that we’re adding a bonus of $7.8 million to the May KDP Select global fund on top of the previously announced $3 million base fund, bringing the total fund to $10.8 million. We are also pleased to report that:

•    KDP Select authors are on track to earn over $60M in the first half of 2015 from books read in Kindle Unlimited and the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.

•    Total royalties across subscription and a la carte sales earned by KDP Select authors in the US are on track to more than double in the first half of 2015 compared to the same period last year.

•    Authors have continued to renew their titles in KDP Select at rates in excess of 95% each month since Kindle Unlimited launched.

These trends give us the confidence to look forward and share that the KDP Select global fund will be in excess of $11M for both July and August.

We’re always looking at ways to make our programs even better, and we’ve received lots of great feedback on how to improve the way we pay KDP authors for books in Kindle Unlimited. One particular piece of feedback we’ve heard consistently from authors is that paying the same for all books regardless of length may not provide a strong enough alignment between the interests of authors and readers. We agree. With this in mind, we’re pleased to announce that beginning on July 1, the KDP Select Global Fund will be paid out based on the number of pages KU and KOLL customers read.

As with our current approach, we’ll continue to offer a global fund for each month. Under this new model, the amount an author earns will be determined by their share of total pages read rather than their share of total qualified borrows. Here are a few examples illustrating how the fund will be paid out. For simplicity, assume the fund is $10M and that 100,000,000 total pages were read in the month:

•    The author of a 100 page book which was borrowed and read completely 100 times would earn $1,000 ($10 million multiplied by 10,000 pages for this author divided by 100,000,000 total pages).

•    The author of a 200 page book which was borrowed and read completely 100 times would earn $2,000 ($10 million multiplied by 20,000 pages for this author divided by 100,000,000 total pages).

•    The author of a 200 page book which was borrowed 100 times but only read half way through on average would earn $1,000 ($10 million multiplied by 10,000 pages for this author divided by 100,000,000 total pages).

We will similarly change the way we pay KDP Select All-Star bonuses which will be awarded to authors and titles based on total KU and KOLL pages read.

We think this is a solid step forward and better aligns the interests of readers and authors. Our goal, as always, is to build a service that rewards authors for their valuable work, attracts more readers and encourages them to read more and more often. We welcome your continued feedback and ideas about how we can further improve Kindle Direct Publishing and Kindle Unlimited.

In the coming days we’ll share more details about this change. In the meantime, for further information (such as how we measure pages read) you can read more here:  https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId=A....

Best Regards,

The Kindle Direct Publishing Team

Scene Spotlight: ISABELLA’S AIRMAN (Out of Time #2) by Sofia Grey #Romance

spotlight

Comment on the post for a chance to win the author’s exciting giveaway!

Isabellas_Airman-Sofia_Grey-500x800ISABELLA’S AIRMAN (Out of Time #2)

Time travel student Isabella Gillman is about to embark on her most challenging assignment–leaping back to 1941 to observe World War II. The rules are simple: don’t get emotionally involved, and don’t interfere.

She breaks the first rule when she falls in love with rear-gunner Davy Porteous. The second is on its way out as well, when she realizes history says he won’t survive the war. Torn between the fundamental laws of her society, and the man she loves, Isabella faces a harsh reality: does she risk both their lives for a future that may not happen?

She can’t predict the results if she corrupts the timelines, but without her actions, Davy is out of time.

The Scene:

My quiet words hung between us. Inside, I cringed. There was no reason ever to tell the natives why we were there or to hint at future tech. Nothing would corrupt the timelines quicker than a peek at the future, and I felt cold at the secret I almost revealed.

Davy replaced his cup in its saucer, and then reached across the table and touched the back of my hand. My gaze leaped to meet his. “Maybe when I go on leave next time, you might come with me? I could take you to Hadrian’s Wall and to sample my mum’s baking.”

Shame flooded me at the deception I was creating. I couldn’t look at him. I tucked both hands in my lap and stared down at the table. The tea left a bitter taste in my mouth, or maybe that was guilt? This was so unfair.

I didn’t even realize I was trembling until Davy spoke in a low, pained voice. “I’m sorry, Isabella. I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable.”

Looking up, I saw the hurt in his eyes and the way his jaw tightened. “I’m sorry,” I blurted. “I can’t do that.”

His mouth twisted, but he didn’t look away. “I’ve only known you a couple of days, and I know it’s too soon to be making plans, so don’t say no. Not yet.” He hesitated. I wondered if he could hear how loud my heart was pounding. “Let’s just take it as it comes. One day at a time.” His lips curved in a ghost of a smile. “Can we do that?”

I longed to say yes. This was supposed to be a fact-finding exercise and a step toward an excellent grade for the field trip. Over a pot of tea in a bustling café, it had grown into something I didn’t recognize.

“Isabella?” His voice was soft, coaxing me to speak. I remembered when he said my name that first night. The gentle lilt, the way it rolled off his tongue like an endearment. I swallowed. I was in way over my head already.

Still he watched me. Tension vibrated in the air. I couldn’t say yes, but it would kill me to say no. The paper I’d written was meaningless. Their chances of survival—this man’s chance—was dependent on more than proximity to home. He wanted someone to come back to.

There was a lump in my throat the size of a rock. “One day at a time.”

His smile was real this time. “That’s all right, then.” He slid the plate of forgotten carrot cake toward me. “We start with cake.”

The author explains what’s happening in the scene.

This scene is set in a busy tea shop close to the airfield where Davy is based. They’ve taken a walk there, to spend some time together – a normal pursuit for Davy, but something quite alien for Isabella.

She comes from a supposedly enlightened society, one that doesn’t believe in emotions any more. In reality, it means that when she falls in love with Davy, she has no defences against it at all. She falls hard. She knows from the research work she’s done, that Davy doesn’t survive the war, and this knowledge is crippling her.

Davy, meanwhile, is a typical young man from this period in time. He knows he might only have days or weeks to live, and is determined to enjoy every last moment he has. Meeting Isabella has given him something stronger to focus on – a possible future for them both.

The author sets her story to music.

I have an entire playlist for this book, and you can find it on Spotify. For this scene though, Come Away With Me by Norah Jones, sums up the emotions beautifully. Check out the video on YouTube:

Find my playlist on Spotify: https://play.spotify.com/user/12165779057/playlist/5HEuuKNhMlcpfUywOL8e1e

The author explains what she really loved about the scene.

This scene represents a turning point for Isabella. She can no longer ignore the growing feelings she has for Davy. He also acknowledges that Isabella is important to him.

It took me many hours of searching through image libraries to find pictures that represented Isabella and Davy. Isabella, in particular, has an innocent quality that was hard to pin down.

THE TROUBLE WITH TROPES by Jo Zebedee #SciFi

One thing which was central to my writing of the Inheritance Trilogy was that, after several years of reading genre fiction, there were certain tropes that had stopped working for me. Or, rather, they’d ceased to have impact, and there was a key reason for that: they weren’t written as if the characters within those tropes were real. Instead, they felt, to me, like characters-by-numbers, with characteristics shared between books, and a cardboard outline of what such a character might be.

Depositphotos_7183309_originalThe sort of tropes that particularly irked me where the ‘the invincible chosen one’, the ‘smart one who does clever things and doesn’t get hurt’ and ‘the evil overlord’. It got to the point where they irked me so much, I decided I’d try to do something different, and write those trope-ish characters as if they were real people, with real emotions, and real relationships. In short, the sort of characters I could find in mainstream fiction and struggled to find in genre. (And I’m open to a debate on that one or, even better, recommendations.)

The trouble with sending up a trope, oh young writer me, is that I needed to write the trope. Which leads to me having a very – shall we be generous and say classical? – set up. I have the heroic chosen one; the smart love interest; the huge, deadly empire; an evil baddy (an Empress is my case); the band of plucky rebels. Which is dangerous and challenging because there is a risk of people tossing it to the side and saying, ‘oh, here we go, another Star Wars, or Dune, or take your pick…’

That someone identified my Empress as something between Harkonnen and the Rev Mother in Dune, and my main character as somewhat Paul-like pleased me. My drawing on the trope had worked. But had my inverting of it?

My chosen one, Kare, is no Paul, not when you delve closer. Kare could be any one of us put into difficult circumstances, and given a fate we’d run from. He’s human. He hurts. He struggles. He doesn’t always overcome. In fact, one of the criticisms of the book has been that, in the end (without spoiling), he doesn’t do what we expect him to do and stand tall and triumphant. Because that’s the trope, not a real person. A real person gets knocked back. They lose confidence, and hope.

I’m not sure what I want people to take away from my book. It’s a dark one, so it’s unlikely to be fluffy bunnies under rainbows. However, on my discussion thread here https://www.sffchronicles.com/forum/jo-zebedee/ several people have commented that I have made them question how they write characters. How close they come to them, and how real those characters can be. I think, if what I achieve, some more rounded characters, even if they’re within the well-trod tropes that I, and so many other, love, I’d be happy. Because that’s the sort of thing I like to read and would love to see more of in genre fiction.

Biography:

Jo Zebedee lives near Belfast and writes science fiction and fantasy novels, sometimes in her imaginary world of Abendau, sometimes on the streets of Belfast. She’s been writing for four years and her debut novel, Abendau’s Heir, the first of a trilogy, has just been released. Coming over the summer will be her second novel, Inish Carraig, about an alien invasion of Belfast.

When she’s not writing, working or sorting sock-drawers (admittedly not often) she enjoys gardening, cooking, walking and she runs after kids, pets and a husband (not always in that order.)

‘An awesome read. From start to end.’

‘The sure touch of a first class writer.’

Kare’s seen planets destroyed by the relentless expansion of his mother’s empire. Children killed. His own family murdered. With her power to manipulate minds she may be invincible.

Only Kare might have the power to stop her. He has to try, or face the horrifying future his father foretold. He prepares to return to her city, Abendau. But dark secrets lie in its depths, secrets which will threaten everything: his friends, his loved ones…even his sanity.

“A bright and fresh new voice in the genre, brimming with imagination, subtle worldbuilding and engaging characters.”

Ralph Kern, author of Endeavour.

“A dark journey of self discovery; a story as reminiscent of Apocalypse Now as it is of Star Wars”

J.L Dobias, author of Cripple Mode.

“If you love novels that delve thickly into the consequences of the character’s actions this is going to be a treat.”

Excerpt:  PROLOGUE:

Water dripped down the rock behind Ealyn. He strained, trying to turn his head to lick the wall, but his chains prevented him, the magnetic binding on his wrists too strong to be broken. His captors knew him well enough to use subtle things to torment him: the sound of water, so blessed on the hot, dry, Abendau; the prism on its thin chain catching sunlight from a small window and sending rainbows darting; the slow build of pain in muscles held firm, a pain that went deep, full of despair.

To hell with them: he was staying where he was, aware of who he was, even if his jaw ached from gritting his teeth and his hands had blistered from gripping his chains. Whatever she sent his way, whatever temptation, he’d take it and spit in her face. He closed his eyes against the dancing light.

Footsteps sounded, clipped, not the boots of the guards. He tried to move back, but there was nowhere to go; he was already tight against the wall. He tensed at the hiss of the cell opening. The footsteps stopped, right in front of him; he could feel her watching him.

Oh, gods. He waited, head down. Please let her leave. He clenched his fists, ears alert, his breathing shallow. She was coming so often now, not giving him time to build his strength.

“Tell me a vision of my future,” said the Empress. Her first touch whispered its way past his resolve and he whipped his head to the side, trying to force her away. Once he’d been strong enough, he was sure of it, but after his months held in the cell, this time she held firm. Pain built, deep in his head, a white pain that obscured his thoughts and left only the core of him: the power she wished to use.

No.” His wrists jerked in their manacles, the magnets’ hard edges rubbing the broken skin beneath. The clean, sharp pain made his mind a little clearer. “No.”

“Tell me.” Her voice demanded obedience.

His eyes opened to a slit. He fought, willing them closed, but his eyelids were forced up. The prism’s light danced across the walls, inescapable, but he willed his focus away and back to the Empress. Her smile chilled him to the bone; she knew he was close to the end, that she was wearing him down. She knew and she enjoyed it, sadistic bitch that she was.

“Give me what I want,” she said, “and I’ll leave you in peace.”

He licked his lips, tongue rasping. She lied: she would come again. He knew better than any that the future was a drug, even for those who only heard it. He shook his head, the effort draining him, and whispered, “No.”

“Look at the prism, Ealyn-Seer.”

He couldn’t stop himself. The light caught his eyes and he fell into the future, moving from the cell, up, up, through the palace to the grand entrance hall. He tried to hold onto the reality of the cell, focus on the pain in his wrists, fill himself with the hatred and anger that had held him to this point, but found himself standing before a stone arch. On a dais to the side a woman and man stood, wearing long acolyte’s gowns, like those of the tribal people of the plains. He was forced to his knees before them. Their minds invaded his, their joint powers – greater than the Empress’, greater than his had ever been – took his thoughts for their own. Rebel, they said, close to him, echoing each other. He ducked his head, trying to hide. Seer, they said, mocking his attempt: rebel-seer-father.

“Look at them.” The Empress’ voice rang out, and he lifted his head. Their eyes were his green. The woman had the sharp chin and high cheekbones of the Empress, the man dark hair falling over a pale face that could be Ealyn’s own. Rebel-seer-father. He looked between them and, finally, sickeningly, knew why he’d been taken.

A wave of exultation ran from the Empress, and he could feel life within her, tiny, not even babies yet. She’d got what she wanted: children born of their combined powers, shaped and moulded to further her empire. Who knew how she’d done it, taken what she needed from him – he’d had a whole series of medical tests when he’d first been captured. It didn’t matter how, only what it might mean. He watched, helpless in his future, as his children pronounced judgement and sentenced him to the torture chambers of Omendegon.

The vision faded. His head sank forward, drained of all energy. Dimly, he was aware of the Empress leaving and the cell door closing, and could feel only relief. The light danced on the rock ground before him, pin-pricks of promise. It would be easy to focus on it, wander the paths ahead and release himself from the hot, dry cell. It was what the Empress wanted: to trap him, his sanity lost, fit only to give her the knowledge her own psyching couldn’t find. To hell with her; he might not be able to stop her, but he was damned if he’d make it easy.

A parrot’s screech startled him. The cell became dappled in warm sunlight. He tried to fight the vision but nothing worked: not pain, not the dripping water. He faded into the future, one where he stood on a jungle-encroached path. Holbec, he decided, near the Banned base. He drew in a sharp breath; if he was back with the Banned, there was a chance he’d get out of the cell. Something buzzed close to his cheek and he lifted his hand to swat it, but the chains of his past self stopped him. The sound of laughter drifted up the path. He turned a corner and two children walked ahead, dark heads together as they talked.

“Hey!” His words were croaked from thirst.

They turned, their green eyes meeting his, the girl’s smile wide, the boy’s fringe dark over his laughing eyes. Ealyn drew in a sharp breath, and spun out of the vision. His. They were his. Just as the cold adults in their acolyte’s gowns were. Two futures, not the same. Hope flared, from somewhere he’d been sure was too buried to come alive again.

Around him the rainbows danced. He could take another look to be sure. He closed his eyes, fighting temptation. That path, the Seer’s path, led to madness; he’d seen it often in others.

But the children had been happy in the jungle, not sad and used and cruel. Somewhere, there was a path to that future. It didn’t matter what it did to him; it didn’t matter if it drove him to his death or madness: he had to find it, not let the Empress ruin his lost children. Decided, he lifted his chin and focused on the prism, seeking the path he needed. And when he didn’t find it the first time, he looked again. And again, leaving the dry cell to walk the paths of time, hope carrying him where nothing else could have.

What happens when the one you love lives in another dimension?

Available from Amazon

Excerpt:

The squeak of hinges snapped Parker’s attention to the door. Hottie stood in the doorway, one hand on the frame, the other on the handle, a look of determination plastered on his face. A look she was familiar with. A look she saw reflected in her mirror on a daily basis. A look mirrored on her coworkers’ faces when working a case.

A look she never thought to see directed her way.

Which was a bit unnerving, but not nearly as unnerving as the realization he’d followed her. He stood in the doorway like he owned the place. Or owned her.

Her limbs shuddered like a car without shocks. He. Followed. Her. Was he stalking her? Was he with the ones who tried to kidnap her? What was he doing here? More to the point, how did she get rid of him? Her muscles might be coming out of a deep freeze, but that didn’t mean she could hop off the bed and toss him out the door.

Where was the damn call button?

Parker patted the mattress. Hottie took a step closer. Then another. No button. Her heart shook an uneven rhythm, the beat a warning drum in her veins. Her hand moved faster against the mattress, searching, seeking, not finding.

Damn it.

“Be of ease. I mean no harm.”

She stilled, her hand paused mid-pat as if his words flipped her off switch. Deep and soothing, his voice stroked across frazzled nerves, slowing her racing heart. If he could bottle that sound, women would fall at his feet.

Karilyn’s Bio

Karilyn Bentley’s love of reading stories and preference of sitting in front of a computer at home instead of in a cube, drove her to pen her own works, blending fantasy and romance mixed with a touch of funny.

Her paranormal romance novella, Werewolves in London, placed in the Got Wolf contest and started her writing career as an author of sexy heroes and lush fantasy worlds.

Karilyn lives in North Texas with her own hunky hero, a psycho dog nicknamed Hell Hound, a crazy puppy, and a handful of colorful saltwater fish.
