So Which is It: “Opposites Attract” or “Birds of a Feather?”

by Kassandra Lamb ~ I was the guest of Lois Winston and her protagonist, Anastasia Pollack this past week. I was talking about how, in some ways at least, opposites do attract…

“Opposites Attract”…In Fiction and Real Life

I’m sure you’ve heard the two adages: “Birds of a feather flock together” and “Opposites attract.” Both can refer to romantic attraction. But which is true?

As someone who has been an observer of human nature for many decades, I can say that … it depends.

In some ar...

How My Muse Revealed My Protagonist’s History with Flashbacks & Dreams

by Kassandra Lamb ~ Yesterday, I had a fun visit over at the Stiletto Gang’s blog, chatting about how my muse revealed my protagonist’s history with flashbacks and dreams. Writing the post really gave me some insight into how this pantsing thing works.

Here’s a peek…

How My Muse Revealed My Protagonist’s History with Flashbacks & Dreams

I am a pantser, which means I write by the seat of my pants. No outline, just a basic story idea, and I sit down and see what pours out onto the page. W...

The Challenges of Switching Subgenres

challenges of switching subgenres (copyright Donnell Bell)

by Kassandra Lamb ~ Last Friday, I was the guest poster on Donnell Bell’s feature, Help From My Friends Friday. Donnell is such a great host. She let me chatter on about the challenges of switching subgenres, specifically from cozies to police procedurals.

Some of those challenges I anticipated, like finding a unique voice for my new main character, but others took me somewhat by surprise. Check out the post HERE

Posted by Kassandra Lamb ~ Kassandra is a re...

How To Make the Most of a Mystery Convention

by Vinnie Hansen ~ Readers, have you ever been to a mystery convention? Did you even know that they existed? Writers, do you know the difference between a conference (aimed at improving writing craft and/or getting published) and a convention (aimed at connecting with readers through panels and book signings)?

I’ve been to both, but I think I prefer conventions, even though they are big and somewhat overwhelming, especially for someone as painfully introverted as I am. But it’s so much fun to...

Trusting Your Gut ~ an Encore (Plus a New Release)

by Kassanda Lamb ~ In my new release, Felony Murder (see below), my Chief of Police protagonist is constantly being annoyed by “niggling feelings.” She doesn’t quite know what to make of them. But she is familiar with “gut instincts,” and when she learns from a psychologist friend that the niggling feelings are a milder version of those instincts, she is more accepting of them. All this led me to think that now would be a good time to re-run one of my favorite posts, on Trusting Your Gut!

10 Surprises on Jury Duty ~ An Encore (Plus a New Release)

by Kassandra Lamb ~ As I’m about to release the book, Felony Murder, that this experience inspired, I figured it was a good time to re-run this post ~ about several things that took me by surprise on jury duty.

In early December, 2021, I was tapped for jury duty. This is something most people try to get out of, but I was delighted. And I was also a little surprised by several things I didn’t expect.

Why was I delighted? Because I’m a mystery writer, so this was an excellent chance to rese...

Winston Churchill, Nazis, and the (almost) exploding chocolate bar (Plus a New Release)

by K.B. Owen ~ In honor of Valentine’s Day tomorrow, we thought you might enjoy an encore presentation of this post about an exploding chocolate bar.

exploding chocolate

Because even on the most romantic day of the year, we mystery writers are still focused on murder and mayhem.

The year was 1943, and those crafty Nazis had come up with another plan to assassinate Winston Churchill.  They decided to prey upon the Prime Minister’s fondness for expensive chocolate, and began work on a bomb hidden in a pound...
