Dan Brown – Stratený symbol (Robert Langdon #3)

Prvé myšlienky bezprostredne po dočítaní: dala som to

Dana Browna vám ako autora určite nemusím predstavovať. Keďže som od neho prečítala nejednu knihu, na Stratený symbol som sa veľmi tešila. Záhady, mystika, napätie – to všetko som čakala od tohto príbehu, pretože mi to autor ponúkol v jeho predchádzajúcich knihách. No už po pár kapitolách som vedela, že to nie je to pravé orechové. Niečo tomu jednoducho chýbalo a ja som takmer do poslednej chvíle nevedela čo. Príliš veľa faktov a záhady, ktoré so mnou nič nerobili. Oproti svojim predchodkyniam príbeh nemá také svižné tempo. Anjelov a démonov a Da Vinciho kód som hltala. Knihy sú opradené tajomnom, človek nevie, čo od ďalšej stránky čakať. No Stratený symbol ma nevtiahol. Chýbalo mi tam to povestné napätie. Kde pri prvých dvoch príbehoch som mala chuť riešiť záhady s postavami, no tu to tak nebolo. Akoby si autor všetko zaujímavé vyčerpal v predchádzajúcich príbehoch.

Langdon sa usmial. „Prepáčte, ale slovo okultný napriek čarovným obrazom uctievania diabla znamená ˒ukrytýʾ alebo ˒tajnýʾ. V časoch náboženského útlaku poznatky, ktoré boli v rozpore s doktrínou, sa museli držať ukryté alebo ˒okultnéʾ, a pretože cirkev sa nimi cítila ohrozená, predefinovali všetko ˒okultnéʾ na zlé a tento predsudok prežil.“

Úvod je naozaj skvelý. Roberta Langdona pozvú prednášať do washingtonského Kapitolu. Rád pozvanie prijíma, pretože ho má na svedomí jeho dlhoročný priateľ. Avšak po príchode ho čaká nemilé prekvapenie. Odťatá ruka so zlatým prsteňom a záhadnými tetovaniami. Robert hneď spoznáva ruku svojho priateľa. Vtedy sa rozpúta boj s časom. Dokáže zachrániť Petra Solomona a popritom vyriešiť najväčšiu záhadu dejín?

Slobodomurárstvo nič z toho neponúka. Slobodomurári nesľubujú spasenie. Nemajú špecifickú teológiu a nesnažia sa vás konvertovať. Diskusie o náboženstve sú v skutočnosti v slobodomurárskych lóžach zakázané.

Znie to dobre, všakže? Po prečítaní knihy si to už nemyslím. Dej sa neskutočne vliekol. Mala som pocit, ako by sa príbeh, s pribúdajúcimi stranami nikam neposúval. Áno, sú tam záhady, tajomstvá a podobne, no mňa to nejako nezaujalo. Predpokladám, že je to autorovým štýlom písania. Oproti predchádzajúcim knihám, akoby poľavil. Dej stratil na intenzite. Obrovské množstvo faktov a žiadna akcia. Tej som sa dočkala až v samom závere, no bola taká krátka, že ma to doslova rozčúlilo. Bola to jedna z častí príbehu, kedy som si mohla povedať, že je to Brown, na akého som zvyknutá.

Živé vedomie je nejakým spôsobom vplyv, ktorý mení možnosť niečoho na čosi reálne. Najpodstatnejšou ingredienciou v utváraní nášho vesmíru je vedomie, ktoré ho pozoruje.

Hoci sú v príbehu rôznorodé postavy, ani jednu som si extra neobľúbila. Robert je odborník vo svojom fachu, avšak ako človek je nevýrazný. Aj keď je hlavným hrdinom, jeho kapitoly strácali na intenzite. Pri všetkých odhaleniach mu robila spoločnosť Petrova sestra, Katherine. Spolu sa snažili prísť na kĺb najväčšej záhade ľudstva. Katherine sama o sebe je silnou hrdinkou. Pokúša sa pomôcť bratovi. Na ceste k jeho záchrane by spravila čokoľvek. Zo začiatku je pre mňa veľkou neznámou, až postupne autor odhaľuje jej charakter. Najzaujímavejšou postavou je Mal’akh. Snová plány, ktoré sú obrovskou záhadou. Všetko má neskutočne dobre premyslené, až nechápem, kde na to autor prišiel. Práve táto dejová línia si ma získala najviac. Na začiatku je Mal’akh len osoba bez mena. Nevedela som, čo si mám myslieť, a či bude pre príbeh dôležitý. Je. Tajomstvo, ktoré sa odhalilo na konci, mi vyrazilo dych. Autor nedáva žiadne indície, že by to mohlo takto skončiť.

Čas je rieka… A knihy sú člny. Mnohé zväzky začínajú po prúde, len aby stroskotali a navždy sa stratili v jeho pieskoch. Len málo z nich, veľmi málo, prestojí skúšky času a prežijú, aby požehnali nasledujúce veky.

Stratený symbol je príbeh o záchrane priateľa a o hľadaní tajomstva, ktoré by, možno, bolo lepšie, ak by zostalo ukryté. Je o tom, ako strach dokáže človeku zviazať ruky, aj napriek snahe pomôcť. Je taktiež o súrodeneckej láske, ktorá spája ľudí.

Nič totiž nie je také tajné, aby sa neprejavilo, ani také skryté, aby sa neprezvedelo a nevyšlo najavo.

Kniha celkovo nie je zlá, ale radím ju medzi slabšie z autorovho pera. Ak máte radi záhady, tajomno a príbehy o Robertovi Langdonovi, nenechajte si tento príbeh ujsť.

Noah Hawley – Pred pádom

Prvá myšlienka po dočítaní: úplný zmätok a chaos

Kniha Pred pádom ma zaujala svojou anotáciou. Ako každý čitateľ som mala nejaké očakávania, no tie sa, bohužiaľ, nenaplnili. Doteraz sa snažím pochopiť význam príbehu a jeho záveru, avšak doposiaľ sa mi to nepodarilo. Zostala som dokonale zmätená a tak trochu aj nahnevaná.

Scott v duchu počuje vresk. Nie vrešťanie od hrôzy, ale mimovoľný zvuk, automatickú reakciu hlasiviek, keď sa niečo stane, keď vám inštinktívne dôjde, že nie ste v bezpečí, že činnosť, do ktorej ste zapojení, je nekonečne riskantná.

Scott Burroughs len tak-tak nestihol nastúpiť do súkromného lietadla, ktoré malo namierené do New Yorku. Pokojný let sa po ôsmich minútach zmenil na drámu, kde jedinými preživšími sú Scott a štvorročný chlapček. Burroughs si nespomína, ako k pádu lietadla prišlo. Spolu s chlapcom končia v nemocnici. A potom sa rozpútava sled udalostí, ktoré vedú k vyriešeniu záhady. Bol to teroristický útok? Porucha lietadla? Alebo zlyhal ľudský faktor?

Scott Burroughs, talentovaný, očarujúci divoch, ktorý nikdy nenaplnil nádeje, čo sa doňho vkladali, a už dávno prekročil hranicu, ktorá delí príjemne tajomných od smutne nudných.

Úvod začal pozvoľna, čo by absolútne nebolo na škodu, kedy ho autor aspoň pútavo napísal. Veď každá kniha potrebuje začiatok. No v tomto prípade mám pocit, akoby sa to ťahalo až takmer do polovice deja. A presne autorov štýl je pre mňa kameňom úrazu, práve on robí príbeh nudným a neatraktívnym.

Niekedy sa človek odnaučí hrať s ohňom iba tak, že celý vzbĺkne.

Autor nám predstavuje hŕstku postáv, ktoré ani neurazí, ani nezaujme. V podstate jediným, kto upútal moju pozornosť, je Scott. Práve jeho minulosť ma zaujala najviac. Neúspešný maliar, ktorý sa snaží preraziť. Ďalej sú tu otázky ohľadom jeho účasti na lete. Ostatné postavy mi veľmi neutkveli v pamäti. Prikladám to tomu, že ich minulosť šla pomimo mňa a osobne si myslím, že sa do príbehu veľmi nehodila.

Ľudia používajú slovo ʻpeniazeʻ, akoby šlo o obyčajný predmet. Všeobecné podstatné meno. A to… Jednoducho nerozumejú svetu.

V závere som sa cítila oklamaná. Autor začal stavať zápletku, čím konečne zaujal moju pozornosť. Verila som, že dej skončí jedným smerom. Vôbec som neočakávala, že by sa nevybral touto cestou. Pre mňa by bola schodnejšia ako to, čo som dostala. Pretože dôvod pádu lietadla mi prišiel detinský a úplne mimo. Aj keď by boli moje domnienky predvídateľné, bola by som spokojnejšia ako s reálnym koncom, ktorý ma skoro donútil hodiť čítačku o stenu.

Nie, ste hrdina, lebo ste sa zachovali hrdinsky. A ja som vás sem priviedol, aby som vám dal najavo, že to pre mňa niečo znamená. Vlastne pre nás všetkých.

Pred pádom je o chamtivosti ľudí, o tom, ako žiarlivosť môže zaslepiť človeku úsudok. Taktiež je o tom, ako média spravia z komára somára. Príbeh mohol byť skutočne vydarený, pretože má veľmi dobrý námet. No nemám pocit, že to v tomto prípade fungovalo. Často sa mi stávalo, že keď som sa konečne zahĺbila do deja, autor všetko dobré v ďalšej kapitole zabil. A takto to išlo z kapitoly na kapitolu. Kniha mala potenciál, ktorý však nebol využitý.

Monica Murphy – More than friends (Friends #2)

First thoughts after reading: I need more Amanda and Tuttle!

I already fell in love with Jordan and Amanda in Just friends. I was so happy to know that they are getting their own story. *Insert extremely smiley face here* I tried to have little expectations, but it wouldn’t be me if it would be otherwise. I was so not disappointed. Although I was a little worried how the story will go on and develop, it was for nothing. More than friends is a great read with humor, anxiety, tension and so much more. On top of all there is Monica’s captivating writing style.

Readers already had a little glimpse of what is ahead of Amanda and Tuttle in Just friends. Now Jordan can’t seem to stay away from Mandy. She doesn’t know what to expect of him. It’s so unlike him to behave this way and Amanda is suspicious. The story is full of tension between these two. And furthermore there are answers to the unanswered questions from book one.

The torture is slowly killing me. That I can be around her, yet not have her, is twisting me up inside. She is forbidden. Untouchable. Off limits. But she is everything to me. She is the sun and the moon and the stars-everything bright and shiny and unstoppable. But she is also the threatening calm before the storm, the wind that howls with anger, the rain that pounds the ground. She is love and light and sweetness and darkness and anger and passion. She is all I could ever want.

Jordan Tuttle is a character you love to hate. On one hand he has this secret sweet side when you just want to cuddle him and never let go. On the second hand he can be selfish, arrogant and self-absorbed. On the surface it can look like he has everything, but deep down he craves for more. His parents don’t pay him any attention and when they do, it is always like: “Jordan, do this, do that. Behave like we tell you to or otherwise you will face the consequences.” At first I didn’t know what to think of him. I was so torn between his good and bad side. It is the moments when it was obvious he cares. And then he cuts the others off, like he doesn’t need anyone. At the end of the book I really fell for him. Jordan is in no means perfect and that is why I like him so much. He is himself no matter what. When it comes to Amanda, he is torn. He never imagined falling for someone, especially not for her, but she caught his eye long ago and now he won’t let her go. Although, he has strong feelings for Mandy, he gives her a cold shoulder at times and that is why she is so cautious. She doesn’t want to have her heart broken again.

How could something that feels this good end up hurting us so bad?

I really want a person like Amanda in my life. I think we would be great friends. She is in many ways like me. She is always calculating things. She never does something spontaneous. And that is why she can’t figure why Tuttle is interested in her. Amanda is careful, but it is so hard not to fall for Jordan’s charm. I really like her attitude, her opinions and personality. I like how honest she is with Olivia; she tells her exactly what she thinks. Sometime it’s Liv, who is not so happy with Amanda’s words, but in my opinion they are true. When it comes to her relationship with Jordan, I was a little hesitant at first. I wasn’t sure if it is real or Tuttle is just playing with her. I really liked, that I was able to get into Jordan’s head. The reader sees him just trough Amanda’s eyes until chapters from his POV appear and – god – I loved them so much.

I like Amanda and Tuttle’s story a lot; however there are little things that bugged me. The number one thing: OLIVIA. Honestly, I can’t comprehend why I liked her in Just friends. Maybe it’s because, I see her through someone else’s eyes. Most of the book she is bitchy and uptight. Her decisions aren’t the most incredible ones. I believe in second chances and I think she should reconsider her behavior toward Emily. Yes, she did some ugly things, but Liv wasn’t fully honest with her either. I was kind of disappointed in her character in this story. It’s not just this. It is like Olivia is hung up on Dustin although she is dating Ryan. It’s really messed up.

And that, folks, is how Jordan Tuttle wins over my parents.

The biggest surprise for me is Emily. I think I understand her better now. She has her issues and they make her do stupid things, but she is just a teenage girl. She is allowed to do mistakes. Who didn’t do at least one mistake in their life? I think if she and Liv would talk these things out properly, then their relationship could be so different, but where is no will, there is no way.

More than friends is a great book. It is about finding your confidence, about how a person should be open to unknown things. It is also about friendship, betrayal, lies and two faced people. They say one thing to your face and say the second to your friends. It is about brutal honesty, when you don’t want people to know what exactly do you think, but they figure it out nevertheless.

Probably too good of a friend. I’ve let too many people take advantage of me.

When I got to the end of the story, I had a feeling I was missing pages. Damn, a cliffhanger! Then I read Monica’s note and my worries faded away. Amanda and Tuttle are getting another book! I’m so excited to read more about these two.

Jozef Karika – Trhlina

Prvé myšlienky bezprostredne po dočítaní: horor ako sa patrí

Trhlina je najnovšou knihou úspešného slovenského autora Jozefa Kariku. Už z anotácie je poznať, že nejde o obyčajný príbeh – a taktiež nevznikol zaužívaným spôsobom. Jedného dňa si autora našiel email od istého čitateľa, ktorý sa v knihe volá Igor. Po dlhom váhaní sa s ním autor stretol, vypočul si jeho príbeh a usúdil, že je to dobrý materiál na knihu.

Igor je čerstvý absolvent vysokej školy. Ako to už bežne chodí, len veľmi ťažko si hľadá prácu. No, aby nesedel doma vezme robotu na stavbe. Nie je mu veľmi po chuti, ale pokým niečo zarobí, je to v poriadku. A práve tam nachádza starý zamknutý trezor, ktorý spustí kolobeh udalostí s prekvapivým koncom.

Kvalitne mi preskakovalo, bola tam taká atmosféra, šialenstvo viselo vo vzduchu, bzučalo v stenách a vystupovalo z dlážky ako roj nepokojných ôs. Stačilo napnúť uši, chvíľu nedýchať a začul si ho.

Počas čítania som mala skutočne zvláštny pocit. Bála som sa, lomcovala mnou úzkosť. Jednoducho vo vás táto kniha vyvolá neskutočné zimomriavky. Priznám sa, nemohla som ju čítať po večeroch, pretože len pomyslenie na to, že časť deja by mohla byť skutočná, mi spôsobovalo zimomriavky, práve preto mi trvalo dlho knihu dokončiť.

Autor ju napísal skvelo. Čo mne osobne osviežilo čítanie, boli jeho poznámky pod čiarou a občasné zásahy do deja, kde poskytoval svoj pohľad na vec. V knihe sú okamihy, ktoré mi vyrazili dych. Ten pocit skutočnosti ma držal počas celého čítania, a preto som bola napnutá ako struna.

Jeden plus jeden neboli dva, akoby tam platili nejaké iné, cudzie a zdravý rozumom nepochopiteľné pravidlá.

V príbehu sa stretla naozaj zaujímavá skupina postáv. Máme tu Igora, ktorý chce prísť záhade o Tribeči na kĺb. Andreja, ktorý verí, že všetko, čo sa tam stalo, je pravda. Dávida, učiteľa fyziky, ktorý tvrdí pravý opak, a Miu, ktorá sa k nim pridala z čírej zvedavosti. Už vtedy, keď Igor len skúmal záhadu okolo pohoria Tribeč, ma mrazilo. Avšak keď sa tam vybrali, v tom okamihu som sa skutočne začala báť. Udalosti, ktoré nasledovali po tom, ako do pohoria vkročili, sú jednak nevysvetliteľné alebo jednoducho sa to udialo bez akéhokoľvek hlbšieho dôvodu.

Záver ma úplne dostal. V hĺbke duše som dúfala, že to tak neskončí, nuž ale čo čert nechcel, stalo sa tak. Vohnal mi slzy do očí, pretože je to ukážka toho, aký dokáže byť človek voči horám bezbranný. Pre mňa je príbeh naozaj skvelým čítaním, ktorý vykazuje všetky prvky, ktoré má dobrý horor mať. Živo si viem predstaviť filmové spracovanie.

Životný chaos, v ktorom sa po celý čas topíme, je v tom oveľa lepší. Z času a čas vytvorí vzory a situácie, aké by nikto nevymyslel ani na kvalitnom tripe.

Trhlina je príbeh o tvrdohlavosti človeka, ktorý svojím konaním ovplyvní osudy viacerých ľudí. Je aj o tom, aké nebezpečenstvá na nás číhajú v horách, ktoré nepoznáme. A navyše je aj o tom, ako človek môže svoje rozhodnutia ľutovať až do konca života.

Team sports were never much my thing. I compete in a sport that is solely about my performance, I can’t play defense or sabotage my competitors. So, I’ve never really taken an interest in the traditional big time sports in America.

But, watching this hockey game, I wish I had.

“Rip his throat out!” My lungs burn as I scream, urging the player’s down on the ice to get more violent.

This game is whip fast and intense, with the guys shoving sticks at each other and body slamming into the boards.

“Now you’re getting it.” Jared’s quiet southern rumble sounds beside me as I sit back down.

“This is incredible! Wings and guys hitting each other? Feels like I’ve had a really long orgasm.” I lean back in my seat and lay my arm across the back of Julia’s seat next to my own.

Jared’s eyes heat and I bite back my smile. I know we’re being civil, friendly … that I’m not supposed to push his buttons. But, come on, this is me we’re talking about.

And even though I shouldn’t be out with him, even with a group, I couldn’t help not coming. He broke my heart a million ways from Sunday and I should completely avoid him … but Jared Hargrove is my Fourth of July sparkler. He’s shiny and beautiful, a forbidden kind of magic that is impossible not to get close to.

“You’re still so vulgar.” He shakes his head, but doesn’t say it with malice.

This is nice, sitting together without slinging insults. The whole night has been nice. Hanging out at a bar, having a meal … these were things we never really did together when we were in the thick of it. Everything had been so intense, so fast. Maybe that’s why we tumbled out of the sky and came crashing back to earth so harshly.

“So, have you ever been to a hockey game before?”

Suddenly, I feel nervous. It hits me we’ve never done this “normal” stuff. I’ve never actually done this normal stuff with anyone, and it’s not my forte. I’m a flirt, a tease … and sometimes I even follow through on those promises. All of my relationships with men, if you could even call them relationships, are so transactional. So surface. I have only been wined and dined on the assumption that I’ll take my clothes off afterwards. I’ve never been spoken to like an equal, never been respected for my opinions or thoughts.

Well, except with Jared.
