This is how I want kids to be in the future. Maybe they’ll even read something of mine, and be like, “Yeah, Dust McAlan was cool, but I want to be like Alyssa Morgan or Issie Kulsky.”
Female protagonists: make em strong.

"never use this word because it’s common, instead use all of these things that i’ll call synonyms even though they carry different connotations and will change the meaning of your dialogue if you use them" — very bad and unfortunately very common writing advice
As a writer, I will say this: use the words you want to use. Write the way you want to write. Be authentic to your voice and the voice of the story. Learn what the rules of writing are so that you can then write your own rules. Learn what others do to write so you can ignore it and do your own thing. Because if we all write according to how we’re told to write, all we will do is write the same thing in the same style and never, ever make any progress as storytellers.
Tell your story. Make it readable. That’s all you need.

Dear Tumblr: help me make Equinox I: Between Gods and Monsters #1 in Amazon's free books.
I wrote this long involved text post here, Tumblr deleted it somehow, so I’ll try again. I wrote this sci-fi novel and released it last year, and set it up as a free download between today and tomorrow. It’s picking up steam, and is climbing the Amazon free charts. Equinox I: Between Gods and Monsters is an LBGT-friendly, multicultural sci-fi novel that centers around the discovery of a planet which might hold the key to mankind’s origin. It’s Star Trek by way of Prometheus, and if you’re a fan of those properties or Mass Effect, you’ll find something of interest here. It touches on social and political themes as well as questions of epic-scale sci-fi wonder, and features six full color illustrations by artists Casey and Shon Burch. Share and like, and if you have a Kindle or tablet, you can download it for free and read it for yourself. Help me make this a number one download and show that diverse books are for everyone, especially in sci-fi.

Honesty Hour, Ask me anything! Nothing will go unanswered
No, really, send me questions, I’ll answer anything and everything. Tonight’s the night for truth, justice, and, er, a guy to answer questions.

Reblogging Thom Carnell’s “thom”-foolery (oh man oh man I’ve been waiting forever to be able to make that pun) because I love working with the man, he’s a legitimate badass, and there’s some fun stuff coming from his end of the creative spectrum soon, so stay tuned.

Amazon.com: Dust McAlan and the Empire of the Serpent (Dust McAlan Adventures) now $2.99 for Kindle
For those of you who prefer the Kindle and digital versions of novels, the price on the Amazon Kindle version of Empire of the Serpent is now $2.99. It’s adventurous, it’s over-the-top fun, it’s action, it’s mystery, and it’s fantasy mixed with the details of what really exists.
Not a remake! Not a reboot! 100% pure original story! Grab your boots and your bounty, and be ready for adventure!
