Patrick Chiles has been fascinated with airplanes, rockets, and spaceflight ever since he was a little kid growing up in South Carolina. How he ended up as an English major in college is still a mystery, though he managed to overcome this self-inflicted handicap to pursue a career in aviation.
He is a graduate of The Citadel, a Marine Corps veteran and licensed pilot. His novels, FARSIDE and PERIGEE, are colored by a life spent around aircraft and the people who make them fly, convincingly depicting a near-future spaceflight industry filled with ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
In addition to his novels, Patrick has written for magazines such as Smithsonian's Air & Space. He currently resides in Ohio as an expatriate Southerner

Note that this eyes-closed method does not work with pen and paper! (less)

It's the "Nike Approach": Just Do It.

Seriously. Get off your @$$ and write. They say it takes ten years to be an overnight success, which sounds about right. PERIGEE took me almost eight years to complete, FARSIDE took less than three. Follow the logarithmic progression and I should have FROZEN ORBIT done by Christmas. At least that's what my publisher thinks...(less)

Don’t Be Evil

Google is still doing it wrong: Google ads has refused to do business with a Christian publishing house “because of the faith we express on our website,” said Concordia Publishing House CEO Bruce Kintz in a Facebook post today. “Google ads will no longer accept anything related to the cph.org domain. They stated the reason …

“Travis considered the larger one below it. A file drawer. Was it even worth bothering with? What could have been in it but paper? What could be in it now but an inch-deep layer of mold dust?

He opened it.

It contained an inch-deep layer of mold dust.”
Patrick Lee, Ghost Country

“It requires emphasis that the states established the American Republic and, through the Constitution, retained for themselves significant authority to ensure the republic's durability. This is not to say that the states are perfect governing institutions. Many are no more respectful of unalienable rights than is the federal government. But the issue is how best to preserve the civil society in a world of imperfect people and institutions. The answer, the Framers concluded, is to diversify authority with a combination of governing checks, balances, and divisions, intended to prevent the concentration of unbridled power in the hands of a relative few imperfect people.”
Mark R. Levin, The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic

“Today Congress operates not as the Framers intended, but in the shadows, where it dreams up its most notorious and oppressive laws, coming into the light only to trumpet the genius and earnestness of its goings-on and to enable members to cast their votes. The people are left lamebrained and dumbfounded about their "representatives'" supposed good deeds, which usually take the form of omnibus bills numbering in hundreds if not thousands of pages, and utterly clueless about the effects these laws have on their lives. Of course, that is the point. The public is not to be informed but indoctrinated, manipulated and misled.”
Mark R. Levin, The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic

“It is folly to believe that Congress and the president, on their own, will make the necessary and difficult decisions to address the impending financial debacle. After all, they and their predecessors engineered the approaching tsunami. As the situation becomes direr, the federal government's actions will grow more oppressive.”
Mark R. Levin, The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic
