Little Free Library

It’s supposed to be Tuesday at the movies or bookstore. How about Tuesday at the library, except this time, it’s a little wooden kiosk the size of alarge birdhouse.

We have thousands of books, hardcover and paperback, littering the spare room, garage or basement. Aside from school book fairs or garage sales, most of them end up in the recycling container. A fellow Wisconsinite, Todd Bol of Hudson, had an ideain 2009 by building a miniature one room schoolhouse and stocked it with books. It...

When The Sun Goes Down…

…the cowgirls and cowboys come out to play. On Saturday night I had the pleasure of being in the crowd for the sold-out “Brothers of the Sun” show, with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw. A couple months ago when my younger sister asked me to go with her and her friends, how could I say no? I hadn’t been to a concert in a long while. So, it was high time.

The concert was held at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford and what an amazing day and night it was.

The weatherman had forecast...

Writing is like motherhood…

…someone has to do it.

And that someone is Tory Michaels, author of the Dream Walker War books. Take it away, Tory!

The healthy one who got a lot of sleep and the sick mother

As I settle in to write this post, as a last-minute substitute for the Abigail’s original guest, I’m freshly diagnosed with bronchitis and some weird throat thingy, and I have a sick 16.5 m/o twin daughter. Yet which parent is it that’s up to take care of the girl, while the other sleeps peacefully in a room with no bab...

Ten Days Later

I’ll bet readers wonder what writers do at conferences. They must think it’s redundant for people with the kind of glamorous job we have to go to Florida, New York, or Anaheim to stare down the stems of cocktail glasses and say, “Dahling, how ARE you? Did you SEE Nora’s dress?”

Or maybe they imagine us sitting in the bars, discussing great themes ala Hemingway and Fitzgerald in Paris.

Little do they know that the cocktail conversations and great themes are merely covers—for discovering the...

The Courage to Listen

Following the Colorado massacre, a debate ensued between those who thought one civilian armed with a handgun (or several civilians so armed?) could have prevented the whole thing, and those who thought yet another weapon in a situation of no visibility, mass confusion, and a villain decked out in body armor would only have increased the loss of life. Each side was convinced their position was unassailably right, and the other side was stupid and—if we’re to be honest—part of the reason th...

Fish or Cut Bait

We have all felt the lightning strike,

that breathless excitement that makes your hands tremble, your fingers clutch

around your treasure and sends you scampering to the cashier with the book. You know the one. It’s the

book you can’t put down, the book that will keep you up all night frantically

turning pages to discover what happens next.

What you feel is a bit like falling in love, I suppose, because it is love – love at first sight.

For most readers, love at first sight is actually a result...

Masquerading as Normal

I have a bookmark with this quote from Anonymous: “Masquerading as a normal person day after day is exhausting.”

I resemble that bookmark. I’m sure that’s why, in MIRACLE LANE, my next Miracle Interrupted novel (which I hope will be available later this month), I fall so easily into the minds of my hero and heroine. My hero has PTSD. My heroine is brain damaged.

This instant connection with characters doesn’t always happen. Some voices come easy; some are like climbing...

Olympic Addiction!

Hello, my name is Cadence and I’m an addict.

Every four years , for a solid two weeks, I’m parked on the sofa with my eyes firmly glued to the flat screen. I’m referring, of course, to the Summer Olympics. For those two weeks I can’t seem to get enough of the competitions, hypnotized by sports that I never (I mean NEVER) watch at any other time.

From badminton to Ping-Pong, horse jumping to archery, I have to see it all.

My addiction began at an early age and was encouraged by my father. You...

Why “What If…?” Matters by Grace Burrowes

I arrived to Denver, CO, the morning after the massacre at the Aurora Cinema. My daughter lives in Denver and had gone out to see a premier of The Dark Knight, though she chose not to view it at her old stomping grounds in Aurora. Thank a merciful God, she was elsewhere when twelve people were killed and dozens more injured.

Two of her classmates were not elsewhere. They’re OK, but they’re not OK. So many people were killed and hurt that a substantial portion of the Denver population was o...
