Interview - Blair McDowell

I live on the west coast of Canada where I run a B&B when I'm not writing. When the rainy winter season comes, I head south to the Caribbean where I've had a little house on a hillside on a small Dutch Island for many years. In both places I write.
2. What genre do you write?
There isn't any one genre in which I write. My first novel, The Memory of Roses, is womens' fiction, a novel with romantic elements. My second, Delighting In Your Company is a paranormal romance with time travel, and the one I'm working on now, Sonata, is a mystery/romance.

I was on the Greek island of Corfu, staying in a hilltop inn surrounded by olive trees and with incredible views to the sea, and I thought, "What if…"
And so my heroine, a troubled young American woman, inherits a Villa on Corfu and a deep family mystery to solve. She is aided in her quest by a sizzling young Greek Archaeologist.
4. Is it part of a series?
No it's a stand-alone.
5. A must have snack while you write.
Nothing. Not even coffee. It would be a distraction.
6. Advice to writers who have yet to be published.
Finish the book. Then start sending it to agents and publishers. Five at a time. When a rejection comes back, send it to the next on the list. Yes there should be a list. Keep five circulating. And while you should pay attention to comments from agents and publishers if you get them, don't let them discourage you. Keep trying. Don't take rejection personally.
7. Is there a genre you haven't written yet that you want to?
Sure. I'd like to write the next great American novel. But wouldn't we all? Or barring that I'd like to write a book someone wants to make into a movie. But I don't want to be locked into any specific genre.
8. Any quirky habits?
All my habits are quirky. But the one that drives my friends all crazy is when I won't allow any one to walk around one side of a post when I'm walking around the other. It's bad luck.
9. Have you written a character that most resembles you?
The character whose mind and values are closest to my own is Ian McQuaid in The Memory of Roses, but bits and pieces of me are in all my characters.
10. What type of hero do you enjoy writing about?
Brainy. Super intellegent. Quietly caring. And of course all the goodies—looks, personality, humor.
11. What are you currently reading? A book by Andrea Camilleri, The Shape of Water. A detective story translated from the Italian and set in Sicily.
12. What are you currently working on?
A mystery-romance called Sonata, involving a world class concert artist and her unlikely lover, a Vancouver cop. Story involves robbery and attempted murder. To learn more about Blair, visit her website HERE

The Forsaken Series - Spotlight
A new series is releasing from Beachwalk Press in April. Today I want to share a little snippet from the first book with you.
BLURB
Punished for sins not her own, can a mortal claim her vampire mate?
The world of immortals must unite to save both themselves and the mortals they co-exist with from an ancient evil.
For Bede MacTaggert this means trusting in the warrior sent for her sister—a man of mystery, of power, and one who could easily sweep her into a world she's destined to be part of.
An imperial guard to the king of vampires, Gawain has always tuned out the needs of the flesh. Dedicating himself to the service of the royals, he's lived on the fringes of his people for centuries. Now he's forced from the shadows and into the arms of a woman who will awaken his heart and body to a passion unequaled.
Content Warning: sexy alpha vampire, explicit sex, violence
FORSAKEN HEART EXCERPT
"Frails are not to be toyed with," Gawain ground out and grabbed the girl, spinning her away, his sword at the ready as the man heaved upward, a dagger clutched in his hand. Gawain's sword rested easy on his palm, ready, the surface slicked with blood as he faced the coward.
"She's mine to do with as I choose." He gurgled, collapsing to the ground, his weapon falling from pudgy fingers. "Paid ten pieces of gold for 'em both, and I aim to get a might of use out 'em."
"Now she's mine," Gawain declared. Raising his sword, he drove it through the man's chest, pinning his twitching frame to the ground. He stepped back, his gaze sweeping the clearing. Males such as this did not travel alone, his cohorts would be close. He'd need to find and kill them…
Searing pain lanced through him, splitting his chest. Gawain glanced down. The thin, sharp tip of a blade stuck from his chest. He touched the blade and snarled. The metal was warm, when it should have been cold. Shock slammed into him as the blade began to glow, turning a searing red before changing back to normal, or as normal as it could be with blood racing down the weapon.
Whirling, his hand already scrabbling for the dagger's hilt in his back, he grabbed his assailant by the throat and lifted. Grunting as he pulled the weapon free, his lips curled upward. "You'd do well, wench, to know your place."
"If you think I mean to let you do her harm…" Sputtering, her nails digging into his wrists, the girl's brown eyes stared into his. Fear lay within the depths but something else stirred. Something dark, dangerous, easily recognized if one knew what they were looking for.
His fingers moved, tightening, loosening as he pulled her against him. Inhaling, he caught the faint scent of blood, fear, sweat, fire, and something sultry, sweet, and light on his tongue. Drawing the scent deep, he wallowed in it, his body responding to the aroma he'd dreamed of but never found.
Gawain inhaled slowly, his muscles tightening, burning. Using the tip of her dagger, he pushed the material of her shift aside. The scrolling marks of a serpent flared before his eyes. It coiled and danced beneath the girl's flesh.

Francesca stops in to set the story straight.

Lacey didn't set out in the beginning to include me in any other books but Fool Me Once, where like I said she has me as the other woman. Through out the stories I am portrayed as a gold digger in some ways. I only want a rich man and to live the fancy life. But I was happy when Mrs. Wolfe wrote Accidental Love, which releases in June, to show a different side of me.
I'm not stuck up--well not all the time. But I am going to speak my mind and I am NOT going to put up with anything. Just because I am beautiful and like to pamper myself, doesn't mean I am self-centered. Lacey is currently working on my story, that she has titled Opposites Attract. I think she has a few tricks up her sleeve. Hopefully she can get this story written soon. I must say, I have watched three girls get their man before me. And I have been there since the beginning. Mrs. Wolfe had better not make this to complicated or else I just might have to throw a fit. After all, she is trying hard to get me and Skylar (Fool Me Once) as friends. I could make that very difficult for her, if I wanted.
Before I go, enjoy this excerpt with me and Skylar from Fool Me Once
"So, how do you know Drew?" Francesca inquired.
Rolling her eyes and wondering why this day kept getting worse, Skylar answered, "I told you to ask Drew."
"Well, I don't want to. I'm asking you."
Packing her things up in her cosmetic bag, she tried to ignore the woman, hoping she would just go away. She wasn't succeeding though, the stupid girl just stood there, arms crossed, toes tapping, waiting.
"We slept together, several times." Skylar turned toward her, also crossing her arms tightly across her chest.
It was like they were suddenly having a showdown with their eyes.
"How long ago?"
"Yesterday."
The last thing she expected was for Francesca to burst into tears. All of the sudden she was a sobbing mess. Grabbing a handful of tissues off the vanity, Skylar tossed them at her. There was no way in hell she was going to comfort this girl. All she wanted was for her to shut up.
Gazing up at the ceiling she wondered if this would be a good time to pray. Shit, this day just needed to end.
"I knew there was someone else. I just knew it!" Francesca wailed, wiping her snotty nose.
"If it's any comfort, it was one time and then a month ago. I can't be that special, he left me in a hotel room and never called."
The crying stopped abruptly. "Oh, he left you too. Well, I experienced that just the other night when we were at that new bar on Cleveland Street. First, I lost him for a while and then when we went back to my place to get cozy, he just left me on the couch. I don't remember much, I was pretty toasted." She tossed her tissues in the trash.
An odd feeling swept through Skylar. "What night was that?" she asked.
"Uh, a few nights ago."
Skylar was speechless. She felt like someone had just punched her in the gut. He was in the alley with her fooling around and then the asshole went home with another woman.
"It's been nice chatting, but I have to go." Grabbing her stuff, Skylar walked away as fast as she could. She couldn't bear to hear any more.

Hot Hot Adam! Come take a peek!

*waits*
Okay, are you done swooning? So I am, as you learn from the book, Mr. Sandy Blond Hair Blue Eyed Combo Number Nine. Or at least that is my name until my sister, Francesca finally reveals it.
I was the first male character that Lacey has written that made her heart race while writing. From what I hear, she really enjoyed the scenes that were just her and I and left Amy out.
When you meet me in More Than Useful, I have commitment issues. I like Amy and I know she isn't someone to just 'play' with. But I know before asking her out that I just might be biting off more then I can chew. Amy ends up being everything I've ever dreamed up. Sorry Lacey, but I am thankful to you for creating her.
Since I am a man of few words--and I wonder if your still staring at my picture, I'm going to leave you with a hot little (adult) excerpt. And don't forget, imagine me above but in a cop uniform.

"What are you doing?" Adam asked as the door latch locked.
Rubbing her hands along his chest, she leaned forward and let her tongue swirl around the back of his ear. "Having some fun."
"Here?"
"Uh-huh." Her lips trailed down his neck, sucking in slightly.
"You know we can get in trouble for this. I could get in a lot."
Amy snickered as her hands slid inside his pants and she found him hard as a rock. Her fingers danced around the tip of his erection.
"Oh God." He moaned.
A smile curved her lips as she realized what she was doing to him. Of course, if they got caught, it would be bad, but she had to have him. Buy Links: Amazon / Nook / BeachwalkPress/AllRomance / Bookstrand

Welcome Adriana Kraft
Today I have author Adriana Kraft and they are here to tell us a little about their characters.
Adriana's Swinging Character
Thanks for having us as your guests today, Lacey! Readers may not know that Adriana Kraft is actually the pen name under which my husband and I write erotic romance together. We're having the time of our lives concocting steamy stories and getting them on the page to entertain and titillate our readers.
Today we thought we'd give you a glimpse into the sexy world of the swing lifestyle through the eyes of one of our characters. Jen and Brett Andrews are the stars of our Swinging Games series at Extasy Books. I think the simplest thing will be to just turn Jen loose to tell her story uninterrupted – without further ado, here's Jen!
Oh my, all this excitement is more than I anticipated. I'm just a normal Empty Nester, married to the man I love for over a quarter of a century ~ it's hard to imagine what all the fuss is about. Eight books to chronicle my adventures, more on the way, and now this interview opportunity? I meet so many women just like me in the swing lifestyle it's hard to think there's anything remarkable about me.
It all started innocently enough. After our two adult children moved out, Brett and I naturally had more time for bedroom activities, and less chance of being interrupted, so we started renting some adult videos created just for couples, usually by women. Let me tell you, we could count on those to get our juices flowing! Before long I noticed that what turned me on most wasn't the hot hunks or the famous "money shot" finishes – no, what I loved to watch and re-watch was slow sensuous scenes of women loving women.
That never meant I wanted to leave Brett or that I wasn't satisfied with him – whatever happened next, I wanted him to be a part of it, to share it with me. One of the videos had something about the swing lifestyle as part of the plot. I wasn't even sure it really existed – boy, was I ever wrong! We did a little internet research, joined a couple sites, put our profile together and started meeting people.
What can I tell you about those early days? For sure, I went from feeling crazy to feeling quite normal. In fact, in that lifestyle, Brett and I are pretty vanilla – there's a lot of kink out there that doesn't trip our triggers. But that's part of what I love about it – something for everyone, and no judgment implied.
So I hope that reading about Brett's and my adventures offers a little something to feed your fantasies, whether or not you'd ever want to check out the lifestyle. There's just something incredibly decadent and delightful about two, three or even more tongues – lips – pairs of hands – bodies, giving and receiving pleasure. Our latest adventure was released in January: Pushing the Limits . Here's the blurb:
Their new Unicorn Sarah Creston may be out of town, but that doesn't stop Jen and Brett Andrews from burning up the wires with some scorching three-way phone sex. While they're waiting for Sarah, Ryan eagerly pursues Brett for some hot male action, followed by a house party that challenges Jen and Brett's stereotypes. Sarah finally arrives, exhausted and drained from weeks spent helping her aging parents. Jen and Brett provide total tender care for three days—but when Jen invites Sarah to move in for the whole summer, Brett asks himself, is there a limit?
You can read more about the series HERE , and you'll find an excerpt from Pushing the Limits HERE . Hope to see you between my pages soon!

Within a few short weeks she meets a fan, and they become fast friends…or that's what Alex thinks. When Alex finds herself being stalked, the person she least suspects is her new friend Jillian. What she doesn't know is that Jillian has been obsessed with her for years. She wants everything Alex has, even her husband.

Alex went into her study to answer some emails and go over the script for her movie again when the doorbell rang. Knowing Hudson was on a conference call, she went to answer it. She looked out the window to find a deliveryman with a long, white box. Her heart melted, Hudson had flowers delivered for her. He was always so romantic and thoughtful. God, she loved him.
Alex opened the door and signed for the flowers. As she took them to the kitchen to place them in a vase, her mind wandered to all the ways she could thank Hudson properly after his conference call was over. Her favorite one involved her being down on her knees. Alex couldn't wait to see and smell the beautiful flowers. Giggling, she untied the ribbon and anxiously lifted the lid.
She screamed and dropped the box. It was filled with a dozen black roses, a purple plastic butterfly attached to one stem. Fear rocked through her body as she remembered the note left on her car. Like a butterfly, a wild butterfly. I will collect you and capture you. Alex fell to the floor and wrapped her arms around herself.
"Alex, oh my God. Are you okay? What happened?" Hudson asked as he placed his arms around her trembling body.
She pointed to the black roses. "I thought you sent me flowers," she stuttered in between her sobs.
Hudson looked at the roses with confusion, then Alex pointed to the butterfly and told him about the note she'd found on her car and how Colleen said it was nothing, probably a sick prank.
"You should've told me, baby. I'm calling your father, this isn't just a prank." Hudson dialed Anthony, Alex's father and a police detective. Hudson held her tight and assured her that he wouldn't let anything happen to her and they would find out what was going on.
Anthony was at his daughter's side within fifteen minutes with two policemen in tow. He asked a few questions and took the flowers for evidence. Alex just clung to Hudson as her father lectured her for not telling anyone about the note that had been left on her car. He was upset that the note had been destroyed, because there could've been forensic evidence on it that would help them figure out who was doing this.
Alex looked into her father's eyes, he looked both angry and conflicted. She knew this had to be hard on him. He had to be both her father and the detective on the case. He assured them he would try and keep a lid on it for as long as possible. Alex let out a moan knowing what would happen if the media found out about it.
Hudson asked Anthony about the possibility of the police providing some sort of security for Alex. She objected, saying she didn't want to be babysat. Her father quickly dismissed her objection, stating it was a good idea and he would arrange regular patrols of the street. He swore to her that he would catch the psycho who was stalking her. He hugged her before he left, which took Alex by surprise because he never showed emotion.
When everyone was finally gone, Hudson got Alex some water and two sleeping pills. Soon she was in bed wrapped in Hudson's arms. Although she was both emotionally and physically exhausted, she felt safe next to him. She sighed and snuggled as close to his warm body as she could as she wiped away a tear and drifted off to sleep.
Alex woke to her cellphone ringing over and over again. Who the hell keeps calling? She moaned as she grabbed her phone from the bedside table. When she looked at the screen and saw who the caller was, she rolled her eyes.
"Mom?"
"Oh my God, Alexandria, are you okay? Why do I have to find out from the media that someone is stalking my daughter?"
Alex just let her mother rant—no good would come out of trying to stop her and explain things until she had it all out of her system.
"And a movie deal? Why am I the last to know everything? Well, I'm waiting."
"I'm sorry, Mom. I was going to call you today. Things have been a bit crazy. What do you mean you heard it from the media?"
"It's all over the entertainment news."
"Christ!" Alex took a deep breath. She needed to focus and find out what was being said. "Mom, I have to go. I promise I'll call you later and fill you in on everything. I need to find out exactly what has been leaked."

Skylar takes over! (Character Take Over Week)

****
Skylar's eyes met his across the bar. Shit, she thought. Those were the last pair of eyes she wanted to see. She had hoped to never see him again. The last time she'd seen Drew was the amazing weekend they had spent together. He'd wined and dined her for two nights straight.
Her lips knew every part of his body, her tongue knew every taste. He was an amazing lover and had magic fingers that could send her over the edge in just a few strokes. When she awoke on the last morning they were to share together, she had expected to have a wild morning quickie, instead she found an empty hotel room. That was a month ago, and she hadn't seen or heard a word from him since then, until now.
She blinked her eyes and pushed the memory away. A blonde woman was attached to his arm, and she looked like the type who could have whomever she chose, unlike Skylar. The woman was so busy gabbing with people around her that she hadn't realized Drew's focus was no longer on her.
Draining her drink and setting the glass on the bar, Skylar knew it would be best to look away. As she willed herself to get out of there, she saw Drew had excused himself from the blonde and was headed her way. Hell no! Taking a quick glimpse around the room she looked for the bathroom as an escape. She caught sight of a hallway to her left and walked toward it.
"Skylar!" she heard him call.
She picked up her pace and ducked into the darkened hallway, expecting to see bathrooms, but instead all she saw was an exit door. "Shit."
She pushed the door open and found herself in an alley behind the building. This was the last place she wanted to be. The sound of the door opening again echoed, and she knew she was no longer alone.
"Skylar, why did you take off?" Drew's voice was just as she remembered, deep with a slight southern drawl. ****
That scene is what inspired Mrs. Wolfe. It played through her head over and over and finally she just had to get it out. And well, I was born. And I have to say, looking back, if you continue from where the above left off, it gets pretty heated between Drew and I in more then one way.
I wasn't any easy character, I'm sure. I have a mouth on me. I cuss and complain a lot. And I often times got mad about things and really overreacted. However, I did not over react to Drew leaving me in a hotel room all alone. But, enough about that. Supposedly your suppose to leave the past in the past and Lacey helped Drew and I get it all figured out in our story.
But seeing as though I do what I want, and it always caused Lacey to stress, I've decided to giveaway a copy of Fool Me Once...without her permission. Let's hope she doesn't hop on and find out! So, if you want to read my story, simply leave a comment. And on Saturday, I'll be back to announce the winner. :)

Excerpt-Get into Adam's head (More Than Useful)

AllRomance / Bookstrand
*****
Parking his patrol car in front of Sweet Muffins bakery, Adam took a deep breath. It was Wednesday, not his usual day to be here. Normally today he would be at some fast food place eating a stale biscuit and wishing he was here. There was something about Amy; she stirred unusual desires in him. He lusted over her, sure, but something about that sweet face of hers kept bringing him back.
A relationship was the last thing he wanted. He was too busy working his way up in his job. He didn't want to be a patrol officer forever. He liked it all right; he worked a lot of hours but not as many as those above him. The amount of time his co-workers spent on the job was one reason he hadn't pushed for a promotion.
He didn't think he was ready to settle down, but he was tired of the one-night stands. Being an officer, women fell at his feet. He yearned for something more, maybe a girlfriend. Even that thought scared him. Raking his hands through his hair, he wondered again what in the hell was he doing here. Amy was not the "play with" kind of girl. But he found himself drawn to her and was ready to ask her out.
Nervousness swept through him as he stepped out of the car. Slowly, he made his way to the bakery door. He took a deep breath and grabbed the handle, hearing the bell jingle as he entered. His eyes darted around the small place and took in everyone. Rooms always quieted when he walked in with his uniform on.
As he headed toward the counter to order, she stood there, her gaze focused on him. Today she wore a tight fitting bright yellow shirt. Her hazel colored eyes really stood out. Brushing her bangs to the side, she flashed him a flirty grin and he hoped it was only for him.
He cleared his throat and stepped up to the counter. "Hi."
"Well, hi." She beamed. "Same as usual?"
"Not today."
"Ooo, a change. I like that."
Laughing, he said, "I figured I might want to try something else."
"What can I get you then?"
She was beautiful. Once again, seeing her sweet and innocent face, he had to remind himself that getting involved with her was dangerous. She was likely to steal his heart and make him feel things. Yet, here he stood, ready to take this up a level.
"A date?"
"A date muffin?" She looked confused, and he liked that he had caught her off guard.
"No, a date with you."
He watched as her grin seemed to get even bigger. That was a good thing, he hoped. It seemed he had a chance of not getting turned down.
"I'd like that." She spoke in a quieter voice.
"I'm off duty Friday evening, does that work for you?"
She nodded.
Happiness leapt through his body. She said yes and he didn't know why he was so giddy. He couldn't recall ever feeling this excited about a date before.
"Is there anything else I can get you?" she asked.
His gaze dropped to her lips a moment, and he imagined how soft they would feel against his. Wondered if they tasted as good as he thought they would.
"Uh, let me try a blueberry walnut muffin."
"Those are my special today." She turned to head to the container where all the bakery items were kept. She returned with a brown paper bag, rolled up tightly, and a cup of coffee. She handed it to him as he gave her the money. "I'll be looking forward to Friday."
"Me too."
He started to turn to leave when she called to him. "Um, should we exchange numbers or something? That way I can let you know where I live. Or do you want to meet somewhere?"
His face flushed, and embarrassment was all he felt. How could he have forgotten something as simple as a number?
Setting his order down on the counter, he pulled out his cellphone, trying to appear collected. "What's you number?"
She told him and he programmed it in.
"I think you've got everything now." She giggled.
While grabbing his order he said, "I think so. I can already tell you're going to be useful."
He gave her a slight nod and rushed back toward his patrol car to try and gather himself. Sitting down, he let out a long breath. He felt a little stupid and hoped he hadn't made a fool of himself.
Opening the bag, he reached in to take out his muffin. He took a bite without looking and he recognized the flavor. Pulling it away, he saw he was eating his usual banana nut. A quick glance in the bag and he saw another muffin, the blueberry walnut, and a small note.
Just in case you didn't like the blueberry.
Amy, x o
A whole new emotion flooded through his body, and he couldn't quite pinpoint what it was. One thing he did know—it was nice, but it scared the hell out of him.
I hope you enjoyed it!
