I’m really excited to host Yolanda Shoshana, author of Coven of the Courtesan!
Who has been the biggest influence on your writing? How so?
I do not have one influence is it a big ole mix from Shakespeare, VC Andrews, Lorraine Hansberry to Jackie Collins. My influences are diverse kind of like I am. I am a lover of good writing across different genres. I was a theater major which is probably why I like to discover and get inspired by so many different writers.
If you were going to slash two (or more) of your favorite characters from any book, film, or TV show, who would it be, why, and what’s their favorite position?
Oh this is a toss up so I am going to make it a foursome. (I like the way she thinks!) First I would slash Sherlock and Watson from the show, Elementary, because I love their chemistry and wonder what it would be like. I imagine it would be missionary. But I also want to slash Morgan and Garcia from Criminal Minds because it is probably never gonna happen on the show. It would so be doggystyle. Then I would slash the four of them for a big ‘ole interracial orgy!

Tell me about your groupies–what have been your favorite fan moments?
My favorite fan moments tend to happen in the streets of New York, I will hear my name and it’s someone who has read my book or who is following my work on social media. People not only come up to me to say hello, since they know that I am clairvoyant, they ask questions and tell me all kinds of things like they know me. It’s rather cool that people trust me so much. I treasure that.
Every author has pitfalls in their writing process. Describe one of yours, and what you do to dig out of it.
My pitfall is New York City. There is so much to do and distract on any given night. It takes great effort to stay home and write sometimes. How I dig out of it is hard deadlines. If I pick a date to be complete with a piece or a book I am working on, I make myself stick to it. It makes me stay focused on getting it done.
My mother always joked about her special place in Hell—just punishments for guilty pleasures. What guilty pleasures will send you to your special place in Hell?
Thank goodness I am Jewish so I’m not going to Hell. LOL! However, if they were making a special arrangement for me to go I would say that my guilty pleasures of porn would send me. I love porn and smut, not the kind that degrades women but the kind that shows off how much women love good sex. I am a big promoter of telling women to watch porn with their partner so that they can learn some new moves. Some of the people in porn have sweet skills.

Meet Erotica Author, Muhammed Sokhna
Today Muhammed Sokhna is joining me. I’m thrilled, because I don’t often get a lot of male authors. Loving it, and you’ll love him!
Who has been the biggest influence on your writing? How so?
My 11th and 12th grade literature teachers had the biggest influence on my writing. During the last two years of high school my literature teachers gave me tools that I would never thought I would utilize today. They gave me a basic understanding on how my words can be a channeled into a beautiful painting. It took me five years to fully understand what they were trying to tell me about writing. Writing is an art and deserves to be treated with respect. I strive hard every day so that my readers can always see the
beautiful painting that is craved inside my mind.

If you’re looking for humble author who can deliver new and engaging content, then you just stumble upon a treasure chest with a black man inside it and that man happens to be me.
Tell me about your groupies–what have been your favorite fan moments?
I had a co-worker who purchased my eBook and was surprised by the level of detail I input into my erotica novels. She keeps asking me, when will part 2 will be released? It makes me feel worthy and overjoyed that I can please readers with my work.
Every author has pitfalls in their writing process. Describe one of yours, and what you do to dig out of it.
One of my biggest pitfalls in my writing process is editing. The amount of time I had to invest just to get my manuscript to look right still gives me a headache. But, that’s why I pay money for a good editor. It makes the editing process so much easier. Also, the eBook formatting is a nutcracker for a new author. Thank God for eBook formatting services like eBook Launch. Without them, my eBook would look like shit in between someone’s beautiful verdant grass. Not a pretty picture.

Hmm let’s see….Being too damn handsome is one. Indulging too much in sexual activity with my fiancé is another. Writing to erotica novels that are too steamy will most likely be my first class ticket to Hell though.

The depression within him started to build and lead to an attempt of suicide.

Who has been the biggest influence on your writing? How so?
I believe I’ve always had an inclination to be a writer. For some it’s more than just doing, it’s soul deep. Every book I’ve ever read, every author, poet, inspires me. Words have always been so much easier to write than say. Sometimes you’ll read a classic and be inspired all over again. The world, people, the things that keeping the cog rolling, human nature and all its frailties and inhumanities, beauties and glories - seeing life in all its perspectives. It’s truly a wondrous and moving thing that breathes and when you stop and try to capture it, it can be magical. And the beauty is that everyone sees it differently. That’s when the pages come alive.
If you were going to slash two (or more) of your favorite characters from any book, film, or TV show, who would it be, why, and what’s their favorite position?
Well, I’m not a big fan of TV – just don’t have a lot of time to sit around and watch it – I’d rather watch a movie. I am hooked on Sons of Anarchy, however. Total killer season end. Let’s see – based on that, hubby and I like Happy – freaking awesome character. Love to hate Gemma too (total cutthroat survival instincts.) If they got hooked up together…wow! Someone would be tied up, hanging like a chained monkey from a chandelier. And Happy would definitely be happy…

There is no better feeling in the world knowing that you brought someone the small gift of escape and happiness from a world that you created.

Commas. Definitely those little half curled arms dangling at the end of those paused words. Bain of my existence. Time and experience makes us better writers. Having the best editors is also a blessing. I’d be lost without mine. You’d never catch a breath – sentences would just run on and on and on.

Let’s see. Due to foodlike allergies thanks to migraines I don’t get to eat anything I like anymore. So, no chocolate, pizza, or caffeine. I do have shoe issues. What girl doesn’t? Hubby and I have a deal for Christmas and birthdays. He’s to find the ugliest pair of shoes he can and buy them for me. This is on the guarantee that I will like them. Twenty-three years later and I still love him and the shoes….

Have you made any New Year’s Resolutions for 2014?
I’ve been thinking about my goals for the year. The last few years, all of my goals have been writing/publishing-based. This year I’m thinking more on a personal level. We’ll see how that works out!
What goals have you set for your writing career in 2014 that you’re determined to meet?
I have the final of a trilogy to write, a New Adult Magical Realism novel that’s been sitting with an agent for a while, and a nonfic that’s under contract though has no release date, yet. I’ve also got 3 proposals in the nonfic arena to satisfy with my publisher, though I’ve not worked up the schedule for when I’ll deliver them. Beyond that, I’ve got a few dirty works-in-progress, and a very laid back view on how that’s all going to get done. Coffee, please?

Tell us about your “big break” in the publishing world. Was there any one person believe in your work first (besides yourself of course)? What did you do to celebrate your first contract?
My big break was with my first book, which is nonfiction. It first came out in 2004, and stayed under contract for seven (7) years. That’s unheard of, nowadays. Anyway, it has stayed a bestseller on Powell’s, and I love that. I love that its power has persisted. It came out of contract a couple of years ago, and was republished. It’s still doing great. I didn’t do much to celebrate its release and success, because it was such a gradual victory, it almost snuck up on me. Also, I’m a lot older, now. I don’t have issues seeing my own success as I once did. I know just how hard all of this is, now.
Did you always want to be an author?
Yes. I never saw myself doing anything else, actually.

No matter the story, where do you always draw inspiration from when you begin each story?
The characters. I’m always most moved by their crises, and what they need to resolve them or destroy themselves. If I can’t connect with a character I usually never finish the story.
If you were given an all-expense paid, five day/night trip to anywhere, where would you go?
Likely back to Ireland. I’m looking for any excuse to go back. I’d also love to go to Machu Picchu.
What is your one pet peeve about the writing business?
My biggest peeve about the business is the notion that writers should give their work away for free, or for very little. The advent of blogging is a great way to directly reach an audience, but even that conduit has reinforced the idea that we’ll all just write for free. It’s almost expected, now.
What is the most played song on your iPod/MP3 Player?
Likely Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Love it.
What song are you most sick of hearing right now?
That freaking Wrecking Ball trainwreck. OMFG. It’s not that bad of a song, it’s just—oh wait—yeah it is that bad.

Who has been the biggest influence on your writing? How so?
I can never point to one influence. I’ve always read voraciously, in pretty much every genre. In erotica, I’d likely pick Anais Nin, Pauline Reage and Anne Rice.
If you were going to slash two (or more) of your favorite characters from any book, film, or TV show, who would it be, why, and what’s their favorite position?
Wolverine and Black Widow, because they’re both awesomely intense and I doubt they’d stick to any one position!

I write for discovery so sometimes I don’t know exactly what will happen next. The only solution is to keep writing through it.

Recently, I attended Romanticon, Ellora’s Cave’s fun convention. Having readers tell me they loved my books in person was such a thrill. You spend so much time alone as a writer and to connect with readers who like your work is phenomenal. I can’t wait to return.

I start most of my books in third person POV and as I get to know the character, switch over to first person without realizing it. Then I need to make a decision which POV to stick with and go back and make changes. It drives me crazy!
