What Lies Below?

Undercurrents
Hide ocean attitudes
The calm above
Fools the novice
Lovers tumble
Come up for breath
Swim to shore
As the undulating silt
Ripples through
Sifted emotions
Drawn down by
Quicksand

ABBE’S RUMINATIONS JANUARY 2023

Welcome to my newsletter, Abbe’s Ruminations. I mull, contemplate, ponder – old and new experiences, finding what I call the joy and laughter of repetition or the abandonment to not knowing.
There are word that carry weight… others are light.
For years my mom would tell us that everything was fine, until it wasn’t.
Fine meant, don’t ask. Fine meant I’ll be okay. Fine meant that I won’t share with you what I fear. Fine meant don’t bother me. Fine meant that if I open the can of worms, they’ll all escape and take over my life. Fine meant I’m fragile.

Wine

You left me behind
And I disappeared
In your fermented juices.
A shriveled grape vine
Thirsty for sustenance.

RUSH

Rush
Steady as one goes
A pace for those
Young and old.
No hurry
No worry
Life unravels
As we travel
Ups and downs
A merry-go-round
No one
Gains
In a rush
If you must
Slow and steady
Makes one ready
Joy awaits

Geological Time Travel

I float in all time zones
Layers of being
Geological lines
In glacial rocks
Fossils of what was
Shortened by fault lines
Upheavals/earthquakes
The present includes depths
Diving down to the bottom
Letting go of air
Rising to the top
I swim
In parallel times

One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Stepping into another’s lifestyle
Is like trying on a bathing suit
Worn at the seams
Stretched out faded
Best to go naked
And find your own
Clothes

Life Savers

A relationship flounders
Dissolves
Flails
Like a drowning person
Who fights the saver
Pushing them down
To save oneself
A lifeline comes from behind
A preserver
Of breath
To survive
One needs to give distance
Resolve
Derail
Become the sounder
Who rises above
Braver

Abbe’s Ruminations – December 2022

Imagine you are nine years old and love to dance. The sound of taps on the tips of your dancing shoes echoes rhythms of the music. Pirouettes have you spinning in circles. Pointed toes with high arches create a fluid extension from your toes to the head with wings fluttering through your graceful arms and lifted fingers.

Dogwood

This year
The open-faced
Vanilla flowers
Peer up at me
From my office window
Full of hope
The best of blooms
I say goodbye
Happy for their blossoms

Big Eyes

I noticed
Within seconds
The glassy-eyed stare
Of a child
Gone cold
Emotional temperature
Seeped through
Made my heart leap
Backwards
Embodied minor
Struggles
Oh, those eyes
Melt my innards
Speak unsaid words
A child with
No real malady
Just Being
