This ‘n That, or The Author Reads the News

A rant and a praise. Which do you want first?

Let’s start with the rant and end on a high point.

This morning’s paper had a story about baby food. A new baby food.

More Babies Squeezing Organic Food from Pouches

So the big deal is that some company has come out with mashed food in pouches so toddlers can squeeze the food into their mouths. Look Ma, no spoon! Modern parents are delighted with this, because they are so busy and this way the kids can eat without having to sit with a plate and utensi...

Can an egg a day keep the doctor away? New study says it won’t hurt. « Dr. Jen Gunter

This is a good reminder. I’m always surprised to come across people who still think that eggs are bad for you. Dr. Gunter cites a “new” study, and that’s great. I’m glad there’s another study thatcorroborates what we’ve known for a long time: eggs are good for you. They don’t cause heart disease.

And yes, like any food, eggs from chickens that live and eat like chickens should, are better for you than eggs from a chicken factory.

Marketing Help For Writers

New Year – time for a new tradition. Marketing is a never-ending and annoying side of any business, including writing and selling novels. All the writers I’ve gotten to know in the last few years are neck-deep in it. We don’t want to spam or irritate people, not at all. But we do want to get our names, and the titles of our books, out there.

You can’t buy it if you don’t know it exists.

My new tradition is nothing earth-shaking. Lots of bloggers already do it. Some blogs exist to ONLY do it. Bu...

Assassin's Gambit cover reveal

Reblogged from Amy Raby:

Click to visit the original post

It’s here! My cover for Assassin’s Gambit!

I think it’s gorgeous! If you want to know how it was made, I don’t know details, but it’s a combination of artwork and photography. I think my publisher did a fabulous job capturing Vitala! And if you’ve been following the Jim Hines & John Scalzi pose-off, I think anyone could perform this pose without having to see a chiropractor afterwards.

A Cooking Post: Tamales

My next-to-youngest daughter won the mother-in-law lottery, for many great reasons, one of which is the annual tamale-making party. Getting together with happy people who all care for each other, and gathering around a large table to assemble special food, is about as good as it gets. And this year, WE got to be there, too.

We’ve been invited before, but our schedules never matched up. But this year, we were in San Diego at the right time and when my daughter mentioned the tamales, I practical...

She Loves Me… She Loves Me Not

I just finished a book. It was the second book in a series. I really enjoyed the first book and I was looking forward to the second one. It was every bit as good, so I was quite happy with it, and certain that I would want to read the third book.

Until I got to the end.

In the last page or two of the last chapter, the author did one thing that made me swear off this series. This is strictly a subjective thing – there’s no reflection on the writing or the story. But I’m curious about how others...
