Food Politics » FDA vs EWG: Report on antibiotic-resistant superbugs in meat oversimplified, misleading?

Antibiotic resistance is a huge threat to the human population. Seriously folks, bacteria have the ability to completely wipe us out. I know that sounds like the tagline for a dystopian science fiction book, one I wouldn’t mind writing. Unfortunately, the threat is all too real.

The biggest contributor, and therefore the best practice to STOP DOING, is giving antibiotics to animals raised for food. This is so true, and so obvious, that it’s unbelievable we we allow it to continue. Worse, we re...

Welcome to the New Week

Oh, look. She’s changed her blog.

Do you like it? Hate it? Couldn’t care less? I’ll give you that one. New blog themes are usually only for the author who feels the need to shake things up a bit. It’s like rearranging the furniture.

Or spring cleaning, perhaps. I did tidy up some of the clutter by removing a few pages here and there.

As a new week begins, I find myself dancing on a precipice. I have this inner tickle that wants to accomplish somethingthat will bring a visible result. I thought t...

Housekeeping

In the promotion category: Moon Over Donamorgh and Bridgebuilders are both up over at Libboo.com. Here’s hoping for lots of buzzes! Well, and purchases, too.

I feel fortunate to mention that nothing very exciting is happening around here these days. Just typical household stuff: watering the vegetable garden, pulling weeds, sticking to the diet, which is less of a diet and more of a lifestyle change. I’ll never be able to go back to eating lots of whatever I want.

Of minor excitement, is our ne...

Death and Taxes … Baby Boomers Life after 50 | Fifty Odd

This is a must-read for tax day, if you want to feel a little better about those taxes.

If you read her list and find things you wish were NOT paid with taxes, come back here and tell me what it is. For instance, I’d rather we didn’t pay farmers (dairy or otherwise) subsidies. Most of the money goes to large, multi-millionaire, corporate farmers, who just get richer from our tax dollars. And it keeps us from understanding where our food comes from.

One Hundred and One Years

Today, I turn eastward with solemn acknowledgement as the time nears 10:40 p.m. in the middle of the north Atlantic. Last year at this time, I stood on the deck of the cruise ship Balmoral, gazing into the water directly above the wreckage of the RMS Titanic. I will never forget the feeling I had, watching the dark water lap against the hull of our ship, as my mind played back the events of that night in 1912. A dark, still night on the ocean brings it to life like nothing else can.

We know mo...

In Which the Author Asks for Fan Assistance

I’ve started a promotion campaign with a new organization called Libboo. Go check them out – there aren’t a lot of books on their list yet, but they’re working on it.

Shipbuilder is up and running over there. By next week, Bridgebuilders and Moon Over Donamorgh will be up, too. If you click on the link, you’ll get a chance to join and start buzzing about the book. I could really use some word-of-mouth spreading around, and this is a fun way to do it, if only because you can win free books for...

At Last! A Health Post

I have reached a true milestone and I have to crow about it. I broke a plateau in weight loss. I’ve been trying for years, and today I finally got below135 pounds. When I saw the needle hovering at 134 this morning, I nearly jumped up and down.

That would have broken the scale, of course, and probably my foot, when I fell off said scale. Besides, I didn’t get any sleep last night and I was too tired to jump. But I was elated nevertheless.

Some of you are probably thinking, “if I weighed 135, I’...
