Old Type Writer: "A horse is a horse, of course, of course, And no one can talk to a horse of course?" (A Journey from Competitiveness to Graciousness...and At Long Last, Love!)

Here's my latest Old Type Writer column "A horse is a horse, of course, of course, And no one can talk to a horse of course?" (A Journey from Competitiveness to Graciousness...and At Long Last, Love!).
In this piece you will find a tribute to award-winning actor Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) as well as my love of all creatures great and small; and, as editor Jennifer Zartman Romano notes, "Talk of the Town's Old Type Writer columnist Susie Duncan Sexton talks through some of the frustrations of writing as well as a recent highlight in her latest installment."
As always, if you click the red words in the column, you will be treated to some audiovisual surprises and comic commentary. Enjoy! http://talkofthetownwc.com/oldtypewri...

EXCERPT: "Hand me that camera now!" barked Alan Cumming as MISTER Sexton transformed sneakily into photographer Richard Avedon, rivalling the paparazzi...poised to snap a forbidden digital memory for posterity. Don obliged shakily. Alan hustled me down the ornate hall where we both paused beneath a vintage chandelier...the entertainer commanded me to "look up!" I did so...stunned yet star-struck. The dizzying result? Impish Me and impish Alan inextricably locked together in a SELFIE forever!

From ants to rhinoceroses
I am not into genealogy...tired of living in the past! Living in the present with an eye toward the future is the best kind of New Year's resolution...so I resolve to do so! Wish me luck!

We can only make this world a better place by starting now...no regrets, just plenty of activism directed toward love and understanding of every species on the planet...in real time...each second of every day!

Happy New Year....may we all begin to appreciate one another and all of those other living beings surrounding us from ants to rhinoceroses!

In summary? Insistence upon animal rights and welfare always across the spectrum, no more guns starting now and until forever, a cessation of pretentious use of religious mythologies and sanctimoniousness to scold or to self-aggrandize, and the election of Hillary Clinton as president round out my wish list for this new year. Like it or lump it...

Old Type Writer: "I guess there are no more rules about what a person can do to another person."

Here's a quote from the column: "What passes for entertainment these days, it could be argued, shows a glib disregard for humanity, grace, and life itself. It's a bit ironic, given that Hollywood tends to be first to get in line for humanitarian causes, yet the chief blockbuster product rolling from the City of Dreams on a quarterly basis is awash in cinematic bloodletting. I don't know what to make of that." You can read the column here: http://talkofthetownwc.com/oldtypewri...
The "carrying" society instead of the "caring" society. Our nation is the worst - too many Westerns in film and on TV back in the day?
Eric Mumin writes, "'But the world has spent the better part of a week trying to reconcile the senseless violence in Paris, France and wagging hundreds of politicized fingers at governments or refugees or religions in a misplaced, manic desire to place blame on anyone but the actual perpetrators ... and, for that matter, to shift focus away from our own collective collusion in this endless stream of mind-numbing violence, real and fictional, that dances across myriad screens.' Strong observation there, Mr. Sexton. Americans particularly have cornered the market in that behavior. Still trying to wrap my mind around born and bred Americans whose ancestors fought, died and shed blood to bring this country into being and fought for what it stands for since then...fervently, traditionally, feverishly hating and self-righteously ridiculing each other STILL to this day based on idiotic, maliciously conceived lies and twisted 'truths' in regards to skin color, culture to augment supposed superiority of one group and supposed inferiority of another group. To me that type of behavior in no way embodies nor typifies what the Constitution of the United States of America, Bill Of Rights or Civil Rights Amendment encourages the citizens of this country to live up to and make the default standard in the face of all else. No sir...that other behavior seems quite un-American."
Drex Morton adds, "I don't know where Roy finds the time to write such insightful commentaries on our culture through the lens of the cinematic media, but I'm glad he does. When we worship the kind of violence represented in films and portrayals like The Hunger Games, then the utilization of violence to promote a misguided sense of self-actualization is bound to seep into the fabric of our sorrow-filled reality. 'Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me...'"
Stay safe and enjoy the holidays, helping share the kind of love and compassion that always should be a hallmark of the season ...

Thanksgiving request: Thinking about somebody outside ourselves

Dammit...it is the TRUTH! Thinking about somebody outside ourselves...and stopping the slaughter of animals? That is the perfect start to CALMING DOWN, folks! Lord have mercy on us all.

If we are wise and understanding and inclusive.

This cat fell into a box full of little ducklings. See how it reacted. I wasn’t expecting this
Every year she travels 2400 km in order to save hundreds of dogs from a bloody ceremony in Yulin. Her attitude is worth admiration!
This Dog Has Done Something Extraordinary To Save His Friend. It’s Unbelievable!
I dunno, well, that's the meaning of being alive: to feel joy and to help others and to ... yep, care! AND TO SAY I LOVE YOU RIGHT OUT LOUD! Not very arch or glib or clever or loquacious...just quite simply I feel really sad for humans who do not get a kick out of animals and who exclude them from their lives. They have no idea what happiness they're missing out on. Enjoy these stories!!!

Caught Charlie Rose interviews on Wednesday evening -- featuring three impressive guests, including Lisa Monaco ...all of them intelligent, calm, sensible, fair and informative! So glad I watched and listened carefully feeling hopeful for the first time since Friday, November 13th.
Bravo, Charlie...I would view again if I could locate the installment on YOUTUBE. Highly recommend. Rose's second guest Robert Gates spoke eloquently, soberly and convincingly regarding Syria and its difficulties.

The ongoing AND looming issue of countries providing safe haven, for shell-shocked refugees escaping from that war-torn nation, got addressed quietly, non-politically, believably, logically and peaceably. An opportunity for global unity is quite possibly staring us all in the face...if we are wise and understanding and inclusive.

Thanks for these comments!
Mindy Bean Richards: "to feel joy and to help others and ...! Beautiful Susie!"
Wendy Lamont Smith: "Beautiful. XO"
Monica Reynolds: "I am so thankful that I had parents like this! I was born into a family of pets, we were taught how to handle them always ever so gently, how to feed and groom and for all of my childhood years I was surrounded with animals, my Mum said to me 'if you look after them properly then they can stay with us'.....so along came hens and budgies and tortoises and hamsters and dogs and cats and... and... and.............and how I loved them all! then I began to rescue, bringing animals and birds - dead - dying - or ones that could be saved..........riding around my village on my bicycle and bringing the needy home in my basket on my bicycle........many we saved - many we buried - my Dad never complaining as he dug another grave and a prayer said for another soul that had gone home....this is what we should be teaching our children, kindness, respect and empathy.........it is a foundation that we sorely need in these terrible times and at some point every parent .I hope.........will understand that this is the only way.......I hope............"
Marla Patty: "Thanks for the tag, very heartwarming. Veganism is true compassion for all sentient beings."

Can we all be more like Jennifer Lawrence ... and the Pope? Please?

Oh, Jennifer, I know the feeling. And good for you for speaking up! Likewise, I am embarrassed to hail from a state (Indiana) which sanctions the slaughter of deer in 14 state parks during the month of "Thanksgiving" to preserve some flowers. Annually.
Nothing deters the DNR from this strangest of activities. Republican administrations seem to excel in hate. Kentucky just voted for a Republican governor (who adores Kim), and Indiana is stuck with ours until the next election.

The deer culling article was in our paper again today...not announcing the dates am I! Deer park "culling" - ha --the most masturbatory activity ever. No rationale accepted.
I have tried year after year to fight this, and the hunting types line up and go all sensitive on me, coming up with rationalizations you wouldn't believe. Those erections must really be worth it? Ha!

Evidently murder is grand fun, even for feMALES. Unreal. Each season another species...for "conservation"! And we look the other way when kids get indoctrinated to kill and pose for photos, too!

And here it is ... Pope says weapons manufacturers can't call themselves Christian

Morning in America ... Fargo style?
_______________
For those of you in Ann Arbor/Metro Detroit ... from The Humane Society of Huron Valley:
Thursday night, City Council voted to allow sharpshooters in Ann Arbor parks and public spaces to kill 100 deer between January and March of 2016.
Council Members are convinced the culls will be quiet and safe, and that this is for the ecology (i.e., deer are browsing plants). You can see the taped public hearing here (speakers start at :54; Council Member discussion starts at 3:49).
[Editor note: Roy can be heard at the 2:55:00 mark. His comments include, "I just don't understand the logic that says, 'Hey, something is getting hit by a car, so let's kill it before said car may or may not hit it.' By that logic, why aren't we shooting bicyclists, lightning bugs, and the drivers of those gravel trucks who chip my windshield at least annually? And do you really think shooting a hundred deer will prevent all car/deer collisions? Don't you think all that in-town hunting activity is likely to drive the remaining deer further into flight patterns that will send them across traffic? Furthermore, everyone jumps to these illogical conclusions about hunting and natural predators and whatnot on this particular issue. Sorry. Not relevant. No one is trying to kill someone's camouflaged, tree-standing 'way of life.' Furthermore, in this instance the deer population as counted (only 168!) does not justify the hyperventilation about overpopulation. There are NO incidents of Lyme disease or chronic wasting disease in this population - despite all the mythological protestations to the contrary. Let's call this what it is. Some folks who love flowers more than animals and have spent an ungodly amount on landscaping in a couple of wards want the whole city to foot the bill for having sharpshooters kill deer because these people think hostas are, quite literally to die for. It's just dumb, expensive, and an unsustainable plan."]
Of course, it's not January yet!![]()
Folks from the Lighthouse Center are inviting you and any concerned about the deer to a meeting this Sunday, November 15, 2-4 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. The Lighthouse Center is at 740 East Shore Drive; Whitmore Lake, MI 48189. RSVP's to Lawabrams@comcast.net are appreciated, but not required.
We hope you can make it Sunday!
In peace,
The Humane Society of Huron Valley

Old Type Writer: "The Truth is Stranger Than Fiction ... An Odd Odyssey"

Here is an excerpt:
DURING OUR WEEK WITH HIS MIA BUT OUR QUINCY, WE'D PLAYED PITCH AND CATCH, GOTTEN HER FAMILIAR WITH OUR ROUTINE PROBABLY DULL LIFESTYLE, LET HER INSIDE AND OUTSIDE AT PRECISELY THE SAME TIMES DAILY AND NIGHTLY -- SHE BEHAVED LIKE A GRACEFUL PRINCESS...ABSOLUTELY NO BITCHIN'!

"EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON," OUR MICHIGAN VISITOR MENTIONED AS HE HEADED FOR HIS SUV, TURNING TOWARD US TO PLACE MIA'S TEMPORARY COLLAR AND LEASH ON A NEARBY BENCH WHILE SHE DUTIFULLY HOPPED UNFETTERED THROUGH ITS WELCOMING OPEN REAR DOOR?

WE ARE OVER PROTECTIVE AND BELIEVE IN FENCES (AS POET ROBERT FROST WROTE, THEY "MAKE GOOD NEIGHBORS" HAPPEN?) AND LEASH LAWS AND COLLARS AND HOLDING HANDS WHILE CROSSING STREETS; BRAD AND MIA IMPRESSED US AS FREE AS THE BREEZE AS THEY RESUMED THEIR LIFE TOGETHER JUST AS BEFORE.

Accidental selfies

But first … is it possible that I finally get the gist of cell phones? I wonder? I am a little late to the party (line). Still think the world would have been better off without their invention. Yep. lots better off...one ringy dingy.

I played with my new “smart” phone (there’s a misnomer if there ever was one) in the wee morning hours, and I have about eight calls from a robot man telling me plans are running out...75 percent of something or other used up blah blah...and I can buy plans blah blah … and that I should delete voicemails sometime (which I did) ...from the robot. Hopefully that all means nothing? Oh, and I accidentally took a selfie? Watch out Kim Kardashian.

So I am really advancing? Ha. Like taking that accidental selfie with what is supposed to be a PHONE? I was even getting so advanced with my self-imposed tutorial alone in the dark in the kitchen that I was the paparazzi - and all I was trying to do was find out how to listen to voicemails at the time? Now, I have one of those damn galleries of boring photographs I can share with...others. I kinda hate these contraptions. More gizmos on which NOT to really communicate?

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” – Mahatma Gandhi
Oh, SO wishing that our nation at least, among all other nations (third world or otherwise), would take this quote seriously. If the shoe fits. And that the self-serving politicians would deal with and address and enact legislation regarding our constant lack of humaneness toward other species. NOW!

And hunting is absolutely included in that mix. And our daily disposal of domesticated pets through gassing and heart-sticking and the needle, as well as animals shipped to slaughterhouses for our "fast" cancer-producing food. Look at pigs, for example. Bless these poor souls. So very much like ourselves, yet we kill them and eat them and in the meantime make horrid fun of them. Inexplicable. They matter to me very, very much. I am very happy to work toward their welfare, and I always shall do so.

The humans making money on murder (in WHATEVER manner they are profiting and there are many avenues) should really cease their thoughtless activities and stop behaving like killing animals is just … okay.
So put down your flipping phones, watch THE GOOD WIFE, and MOST IMPORTANTLY help the animals, go vegan, rescue some strays … and do some self-LESS good. Damn.

Watching the Republican debates conjures up 101 DALMATIANS

I only view the mania because of my kindred soul THE DONALD (Trump) and alright maybe that tiny legislator from South Carolina who is John McCain's best friend. I admit that wholeheartedly...I am curious...and curiouser by the minute.
The "kid's table" earlier version makes me sad. Why can't all of the doofuses stand around leaning on their podiums at the same exact time for three hours just to be fair.

Those poor poor people; they all make me tired... and worried beyond measure. My prayers are with all of them, however many there are. I have stopped counting.
Only 13 more rounds to go...wow?

Need help determining for what or whom to vote? Look to organizations like Michigan's Political Action Committee for Animals (MI-PACA) for help on animal-friendly choices.
Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, tell everyone you know, and let's Get Out The Vote!
Thank you,

Latest Old Type Writer: 'I don't like stupid.' One weekend for iconoclasts ... and one weekend for a wedding

We saw the films Black Mass with Johnny Depp and Grandma with Lily Tomlin and a live show by comedian/pundit/talk show host Bill Maher at Fort Wayne's Embassy Theatre. You can read the column here: http://talkofthetownwc.com/oldtypewri...
Quote: "Bill Maher, explaining how he got into some controversy in a debate last fall with Ben Affleck (of all people), noted that he 'just doesn't like stupid things.' ... Fair enough. In fact, this notion of raging against stupid things defined all of the weekend's entertainment."

But what happened THIS immediate past weekend in Ann Arbor? Well, let me tell you ...
Took a tumble off some steps and directly into prickly shrubbery, rode in a limousine--my virgin ride, kept my hat on, lost my dress and my shoes, urged the Ann Arbor mayor to prevent deer culling, learned I am not alone in detesting Bing Crosby, spoke to a journalist about the Last Tango in Paris and why I sorta love Trump and not Bernie and that I want to vote for Hillary, posed with Zach because we are kindred spirits and love mint green, met my second minister that I see eye to eye with since the beginning of time, and today am sore all over "my little body"? And the wedding occurred on schedule in spite of it all and was the happiest moment of my lifetime! Congrats, John and Roy ♥!!!!

Rayma Gagnon Hogan: "Awe...you are precious Susie!!"
Hope Ross Dressler: "How do you keep your hat but lose your shoes and dress?"
Betty Bob Buckley: "That is plenty of action for one special day! Congratulations to the BOYS and comfort to Susie!"
Leann Frericks: "You look absolutely beautiful...............but you should've worn the T-shirt! Lol"
Beth Kennedy: "and this is one of the best posts i've ever read, susie. congrats to you, mother of the groom. you raised a good one. what a wedding day story you have."
