Game of Thrones season 6. Is Jon Snow still alive? How about Stannis Baratheon?

Game of Thrones season 6 is coming! What do you expect from the upcoming episodes? Now, everything is possible since George R.R. Martin’s ‘The Winds of Winter’ is yet to arrive. However, in a recent interview with IGN, Martin confirmed that one of the big twists of the novel would end up being a challenge for the TV show to adapt. Why? It’s simple, because the book features a character that the TV show has already killed but is still alive in the books. Who can it be?

The Jewish Museum. Exhibition Exploring Suspicious Provenance of Colonial American Portrait Pair

Raising questions of authenticity and fraud, Masterpieces & Curiosities: The Fictional Portrait will reveal surprising new analysis of two portraits once thought to depict an 18th century Jewish couple. On view at the Jewish Museum from March 18 through August 14, 2016, the exhibition will present the disputed works alongside a selection of other portraits from the Museum’s collection, offering a reflection on questions of truth and representation in portraiture. During a decade of research, the identities of the artist and sitters have been reconsidered through archival investigation, genealogical studies, and recent X-ray analysis.Masterpieces & Curiosities: The Fictional Portrait continues a series of exhibitions focused on individual works in the Jewish Museum’s world-renowned collection.

Unknown Artist/Maker, Portrait of a Man, c. 1750 , oil on canvas. The Jewish Museum, New York, Gift of Dr. Harry G. Friedman; Unknown Artist/Maker, Portrait of a Woman, c. 1750, oil on canvas. The Jewish Museum, New York, Gift of Dr. Harry G. Friedman

At the time of their acquisition in 1957, the two key works in this exhibition were believed to be portraits of Judah Mears and his wife Jochabed Michaels, made around 1740 and attributed to Jeremiah Theus, an American colonial portraitist active in Charleston, South Carolina. Scholarly examination of the paintings indicates that they do not resemble other works by Theus, and no other visual representations of the couple are known to exist. In 2015, the Jewish Museum commissioned stereomicroscopic examination and technical imaging of the two portraits. This analysis revealed that the works, though most likely produced in the 18th century, were painted with different pigments using different methods. X-ray and infrared scans of the paintings will be reproduced in the exhibition.

Only one source is known to document the paintings. A 1957 note from the seller, Marie Ambrose, to the Jewish Museum traces the history and ownership of the paintings. The stated provenance was researched and deemed plausible at the time. However, there is evidence of widespread fraud in the market for early American portraits during the first part of the 20th century. Frank Bayley, a noted Boston art dealer, is mentioned in the seller’s note, raising further questions. Bayley was implicated in the fraudulent sale of portraits, including one of George Washington in 1928, which led to closure of his gallery and ultimately to Bayley’s death in 1932.

Given the lack of hard evidence for the provenance of the paintings, a theory emerges: the works were not painted by Jeremiah Theus, do not depict Judah and Jochabed Mears, and were likely given a false attribution when transferred from Bayley’s gallery to Marie Ambrose, possibly in the late 1920s or early 1930s. The works may have originated in England or Scotland and appear to have undergone some alteration before being brought together as a couple.

Traditionally, portraits speak both to the time when they were created and to the future. Serving as repositories of memory and generating a sense of familial continuity, such portraits are often entwined with considerations of genealogy and status. Portraits commissioned by Jewish patrons or families in the young United States, in addition to fulfilling the traditional functions of remembrance and recognition, also served as visual statements of social standing and belonging. Common-sense interpretations of portraits often involve intuiting some direct relation between the image and the sitter. However, there is risk in reading character or history into a representation that is mediated by the artist, the sitter, and the viewer, whether in the past or today.

In addition to the disputed works and related materials, The Fictional Portrait will include other portraits from the collection of the Jewish Museum produced between 1680 and 1900. Some notable examples from the wide variety of portraits in the Museum’s collection are featured, including works by unknown artists or of unknown sitters. On view will be portraits by prominent artists such as Thomas Sully, “the prince of American portrait painters.” There are depictions of other significant figures: Solomon Isaacs, president of New York’s Jewish community in 1790; a portrait by a student of Rembrandt considered by some to be of philosopherBaruch Spinoza; and silhouettes of such notables as philanthropist Judah Touro, created during the 1840s, when the medium was at the height of its popularity.

Over the course of seven exhibitions in the Masterpieces & Curiosities series, which runs from 2013 to 2017, the Jewish Museum’s curators are exploring objects that highlight the breadth and diversity of the collection, ranging from an iconic Diane Arbus photograph, to a Hanukkah lamp designed by Peter Shire. These intimate exhibitions provide new insights into works from the Museum’s collection – contextualizing, examining, and rethinking the piece on view by surrounding it with other artworks, documents, and source materials.

Masterpieces & Curiosities: The Fictional Portrait is curated by Stephen Brown, Associate Curator. The Masterpieces & Curiosities series was organized by Jens Hoffmann, Deputy Director, Exhibitions and Public Programs, and coordinated by Daniel S. Palmer, Leon Levy Assistant Curator.

Support:

Masterpieces & Curiosities: the Fictional Portrait is made possible by an anonymous donation in memory of Curtis Hereld and the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation Exhibition Fund. Additional support is provided by the Leon Levy Foundation.

More famous birthdays today, February 26: Nate Ruess, pop singer born in Iowa City in 1982; Taylor Dooley, actress born in 1993; and Pepe, soccer player born in Brazil in 1983.

Happy birthday to all of them. Have a very nice day, dear friends.

As a songwriter I hate this whole, ‘If it’s a sad song, it has to sound like a sad song thing.’ And that goes all the way back to my days with the Format. I’m an insane narcissist, so if I have to get something off my chest, I’ll get something off my chest.

Nate Ruess

I picked up ‘The Hunger Games’ thinking it was written at my regressed reading level. I’ve spent hours reading it, and I’m not even halfway through. Our bass player, whose name is also Nate, ended up reading all three novels and loved them.

Horror TV shows. Sarah Michelle Gellar will play in ‘Cruel Intentions’

Do you like horror films? Then, you like actress Sarah Michelle Gellar. She gained recognition for horror films like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2. But one of her most celebrated roles has been in the movie Cruel Intentions (1999), where she played as Kathryn Merteuil. Now, she has just confirmed on her Instagram account that she’s set to reprise her role as Kathryn Merteuil in the ‘Cruel Intentions’ series. Great!

NBC ordered a pilot of the TV sequel to ‘Cruel intentions,’ written by the original film director Roger Kumble. It seems that it will focus on Bash Casey, the teenage son of Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Philippe) and Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), and his aunt Kathryn Merteuil’s (Sarah Michelle Gellar) search to control Bash’s soul and Valmont International. Interesting? For sure!

Sarah Michelle Gellar rocks! Cruel Intentions (soundtrack). Enjoy the music!

Gellar’s last work was in the animated series Star Wars Rebels for season two, playing a character known as the Seventh Sister. Also in 2015, Gellar co-founded Foodstirs, a foodcrafting brand and e-commerce startup selling baking kits for kids.

“I think that this industry in particular is so fast-paced that you keep saying, ‘I’ll take vacation later.’ Sometimes later never comes. I’m definitely leading a much slower life now that I’m not working every single day on a television series.” Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Thanks to the WB TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003), Gellar earned her six Teen Choice Awards, the Saturn Award for Best Genre Television Actress and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress – Television Series Drama. In fact, the character became recognized as one of the 100 greatest female characters in U.S. television.

“Ultimately you want to do something in life that people will remember. And with Buffy, I did that.” Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Film ‘This is not Dying’ records everyday scenes from Māori community

Aotearoa/New Zealander Nova Paul’s film This is not Dying records everyday scenes from around her family Marae and Māori community, in the north of the North Island. Her practice is embedded in the languages of early cinematic and experimental filmmaking, and this 16mm, optically printed film uses the analogue process of three-colour separation. The beautiful, multi-coloured effect produced by this process mediates Paul’s relationship to her subject. She explains: “Like water that follows well worn paths along a river, channels of colour trace around significant places to my family”.

Nova Paul’s film This is not Dying

Bright auras also radiate from people, such as young men riding motorbikes, and those eating a meal together and swimming in the springs. Their bodies become blurred, ethereal and ghostly, as distinct passages of time are recorded through red, green and blue filters, and then overlaid together. Multiple moments appear at once through tones that shift and merge, building a floating world of multi-coloured tenses.

Through Paul’s unique approach to filmic storytelling, Neoliberal structures are prised apart to present more promising possibilities. A sense of optimism is heightened by the film’s exquisite soundtrack, which is performed on steel and slide guitars by kaumātua (elder) and famed Aotearoa Māori Show Band figure Ben Tawhiti. The improvised traditional NgāāPuhi song has moments of whistling and humming, adding to a blissful serenity and feeling of nostalgia.

This is not Dying looks to the past while engaging the present: its communities, technologies and politics. In so doing, Paul walks us into a different future, perhaps opening up a space to consider how communities based on traditions of Te Ao Māori can help navigate the pitfalls of a fragmented and globalised era.

This is not Dying (2010) has featured in numerous international screenings, including Recontres Internationale, George Pompidou Centre, France (2011); Rotterdam International Film Festival(2011); and New Zealand International Film Festival (2010). Paul’s earlier three-colour separation work, Pink and White Terraces (2006) has also toured widely, including at the Whitechapel Gallery (UK) and in the Whitechapel Gallery Artists’ Films International program at the Venice Biennale (2013). Her most recent film Still Light (2015) screened in the Rotterdam International Film Festival (2016). The publication, Form Next to Form Next to Form (2012) consists of stills from This is not Dying (2010), and won the 2013 Most Beautiful Book in Australasia Award. Paul is a senior lecturer at AUT University.

‘In The Shadow of Women’ by Philippe Garrel at the MFA in Boston

The Museum of Fine Arts announces seven screenings of the latest film by iconic French director Philippe Garrel. In the Shadow of Women is shot in lustrous black and white, invoking the aesthetic of Jean-Luc Godard as it takes us to a Paris of side streets, bars, and tiny apartments.

'In The Shadow of Women' by Philippe Garrel

‘In The Shadow of Women’ by Philippe Garrel

The film follows a youngish couple: Pierre (Stanislas Merhar), a documentary filmmaker, and Manon (Clotilde Courau), his loyal professional and domestic partner, happy to make films with the man she loves. Pierre meets a young intern at the film archive where he does his research. It’s not long before he and Elisabeth (Lena Paugam) are entangled, and for Pierre, this amorous relationship becomes as much of a constraint as the one from which he is attempting to escape.

Philippe Garrel has been a prominent filmmaker in France since 1964, when he made his first film, Les Enfants Désaccordés, at the age of 16. Many of Garrel’s films from the 1970’s feature his then-girlfriend, the German singer Nico. He also collaborated with Jean Seaberg, Monica Bellucci and Catherine Deneuve. In his more recent films, he frequently directs his son, the actor Louis Garrel.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.

Steve Jobs

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

Steve Jobs
