Paper is all around us. We find it on our desks, in our wallets, our mailboxes, and in our domestic and personal spaces. We use it daily for any number of recreational, professional, and domestic tasks. It transmits information and, along with it, a range of positive and negative associations. Yet despite its practical nature, paper has offered unlimited creative possibilities for centuries. Paper and Blade: Modern Paper Cutting celebrates the expressive potential of this commonplace material and the evocative work from leading contemporary paper cutters.

While paper cutting has been an art form since the 6th Century A.D., the genre is enjoying a present-day renaissance and with good reason. Its accessibility and affordability—requiring only one’s hands, a sheet of paper, and a simple blade—hold both practical and creative appeal. The upswing in practice may also be a cultural response towards simplification in today’s age of digitization and green politics. Or perhaps its popularity stems from nostalgia, evoking memories of paper snowflakes, loop garlands, or paper dolls. Whatever the driving force, new makers are discovering the field with gusto while veteran cutters continue to explore the outer edges of this enigmatic art form. Paper and Blade: Modern Paper Cutting was made possible by the Gretchen Keyworth Exhibitions Fund.

Exhibitions: February 20, 2016 – July 31, 2016. Brockton, Mass.

Pretty girls on TV. Katheryn Winnick as Lagertha in Vikings season 4

Vikings season 4. Katheryn Winnick is a Canadian actress. She is best known for her roles in Amusement (2008), Bones (2010), A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2012), and The Art of the Steal (2013). From 2013 to present, she plays as Lagertha in Vikings TV show. A really pretty actress with a strong personality. Our quote of the day is by Katheryn Winninck because she is as brave as Lagertha. Listen to her!

Katheryn Winnick as Lagertha

Katheryn Winnick as Lagertha

“When I was growing up, there were times I had to compete against boys in tae kwon do, and I’d show them right away that I wasn’t someone to mess with.” Katheryn Winnick.

Vikings is inspired by the tales of the raiding, trading, and exploring Norsemen of early medieval Scandinavia. Lagertha was a shieldmaiden. She rises to become Earl of Hedeby in her own right, going by the name Earl Ingstad.

“The Norse way of speaking, no one really knew what the Vikings sounded liked, they were Norsemen. The accent is really a combination of a Scandinavian accent, maybe with a Swedish accent and an old way of speaking.” Katheryn Winnick.

Lagertha’s tale is recorded in passages in the ninth book of the Gesta Danorum, a 12th-century work of Danish history by Saxo Grammaticus.

According to the Gesta, Lagertha’s career as a warrior began when Frø invaded Norway and killed the Norwegian king Siward putting the women of the dead king’s family into a brothel. Lagertha rebelled and began her struggle.

“I grew up in a martial arts gym surrounded by men and boys, and I pretty much call myself a tomboy.” Katheryn Winnick.

Mu Xin in 2010, from the film “Dreaming Against the World”

Dreaming Against the World is a documentary portrait of Mu Xin, one of the most original and overlooked Chinese artists and authors of the past century. The story of how Mu Xin created an astonishing body of work that merged East and West, the ancient and the modern, terror and transcendence, Dreaming Against the World testifies to the artistic integrity and personal courage he upheld in the face of adversity. Written and directed by Oscar and Emmy nominated filmmakers Tim Sternberg and Francisco Bello, it was filmed on location in China and New York and had its festival premiere at the 2015 Telluride Film Festival (USA, 2014, 35 min.).
