Nanowrimo Day 22
Notable nano:
(Harlow, remarking on Deb) Wildflower, indeed. More like kudzu.
Things I learned today:
Harlow's 7 years older than Deb.
He was there when she was born.
There's a possible twist coming up with his father. I can't reveal it yet because it could be a major spoiler if it all works out.
Not much to share today. I intended to write a scene for a teenage Harlow, and went much further back than that—but it feels exactly right. I think our expectations of romantic love are set much earlier in life than our teen years, anyway. By the time we hit age lucky 13, we're already pretty set in our minds how we're supposed to treat the opposite sex, as well as be treated by.
This is a little wonky for Harlow, as trolls adolesce a lot longer than humans. (Like elephants—the bigger the beast, the long the phase.)
Additionally, his feelings are for a girl who is attracted to other girls. And, it's interspecies. So…yeah. Bit of a hurdle there. Or a series of hurdles. An outright hurdles race, huh?
I ran hurdles in school. Fun stuff, once you get the hang of it. Here's hoping I'm gliding over the top, not doing it this way:
Although, whatever works, man. Whatever works.
If you can't wait for Troll or Derby, click the roller derby poster to buy my current book, This Brilliant Darkness. I appreciate your support.

Nanowrimo Day 21, Monday Funny, & More:
I just titled a chapter after a David Bowie song. Now that I think about it, why hadn't I done any Bowie songs before this?
My troll tries his best not to swear. Because, you know, he's a nice troll.
Notable Nanos:
One got in my face, pointing her tiny fist at my nose and shaking with anger. Harlow's swatter whapped me right between the eyes, and her golden dust turned to goo.
Pixies pulled at his dreadlocks and tore at his clothes. I saw one take a bite from his cheek, and dark blood dripped down his face.
"Let's get in the mansa—I'll collect the rest and put them in a jar," he said. "Give us some light to read by," he said, still swinging both arms at the swarm.
"They're distracted. Good thing about living in the landfill," he said. "Lots here to catch the attention of the fey. They're so ADHD."
His husky voice was inches from my ear, and I turned my head to find him curled on the ground beside me. I loved the sound of his voice—so much. Too much.
Dang, this book is romantic in places. This is uncharted waters for me. I am NOT A ROMANCE KINDA GAL.
Perhaps I'll dwell in denial awhile longer, and share this scene where Deb & Harlow laugh together. I'm not writing any kissy-kissy stuff. Do you hear me, Gods of Story? Not a kissing book!
"Damn!" he yelled, smacking his face, as if squashing a mosquito. The pixies were back, and this time, they were angry.
He shoved me off the drain pipe, and I crawled down into it as fast as I could. Harlow climbed in behind me, and I could hear him scratching on the aluminum.
"Out! Out! I'll smash you like a bug!"
A rush of fog and the feeling of riding a roller coaster straight down, and then we were tumbling out of the old refrigerator, at the dump. I fell on my knees in the dirty soil, and Harlow came jumping out after me.
"Fudge," he said. "That was rough."
I sat back on my knees and laughed. "Fudge?"
He tried to keep a straight face. "What?" he said, shrugging.
"You sound like Ralphie in A Christmas Story," I said. "Oh…Fudge…"
Not a huge wordcount day. Lots of patching & editing.
In other news…
For starters, make sure you check out my interview of RJ Palmer last night, because 1.) She's interesting and 2.) You could win a copy of her book.
Also, watch this space for some guest posts coming up. I'm doing a blog series on my other blog called Playing With Fire, and it's all about the Kindle Fire. If the new Kindle tablet ereader is of interest to you, that's the place to click around.
I should also be posting some links here this coming holiday week to other blogs…where yours truly shall be appearing, dancing in front of the lights for your pleasure. And, of course, the giveaways shall continue to rain down from the sky like tiny pixies on the attack.
Hey, as if all that weren't enough, it's Monday! You know what that means, don't you? Time for a Monday Funny:

New work by Tessar Lo.
Tessar has a solo show opening October 22nd, 2011 at Jaski Art Gallery in Amsterdam. If you're there or happen to be going for a visit, I highly suggest dropping by and looking at the work. It's spectacular.
