Stand Up, Don't Stand By
Last month, I had the honor of being the keynote speaker to a group of talented middle school students from around the country who were visiting Washington, DC as part of a national violence prevention program, Do the Write Thing. This year’s theme was “Stand Up, Don’t Stand By.”
The students, who had won regional writing contests, were flown together with a parent, guardian, teacher, and/or school administrator for a week in DC. The final evening included a powerful and moving presentation by the students based on their essays and poems, Ayla Brown’s empowering songs, and the Harlem Globetrotters.
“Do the Write Thing” is an education program designed to give middle school students an outlet to communicate how violence impacts their lives and what they can do to help reduce youth violence. The National Campaign to Stop Violence (NCSV) is an initiative of the Kuwait-America Foundation, a non-profit, non-partisan organization composed of community, business, and governmental leaders who have come together to reduce youth violence in communities across the United States.

Reader reactions to IF ONLY
One adult reader sent a picture of her copy of IF ONLY and wrote to say that "So many parts of the story mirrored my own experience: from growing up in the suburbs of DC, to going back to school after losing a parent during the summer before 9th grade. As I was reading, I decided to fold down every page that closely resembled my experiences, thoughts, or feelings at that time. I’ve attached a picture of the end result to this email…needless to say, I found “If Only” to be a true-to-life story, and I plan to revisit my dog-eared copy for many years to come."
I couldn't figure out how to post the photo she sent in this blog, but there were many, many folded-over pages! It's wonderful to know that Corinna's story is resonating with so many readers.
