Stand Up, Don't Stand By
Last month, I had the honor of being the keynote speaker to a group of talented middle school students from around the country who were visiting Washington, DC as part of a national violence prevention program, Do the Write Thing. This year’s theme was “Stand Up, Don’t Stand By.”
The students, who had won regional writing contests, were flown together with a parent, guardian, teacher, and/or school administrator for a week in DC. The final evening included a powerful and moving presentation by the students based on their essays and poems, Ayla Brown’s empowering songs, and the Harlem Globetrotters.
“Do the Write Thing” is an education program designed to give middle school students an outlet to communicate how violence impacts their lives and what they can do to help reduce youth violence. The National Campaign to Stop Violence (NCSV) is an initiative of the Kuwait-America Foundation, a non-profit, non-partisan organization composed of community, business, and governmental leaders who have come together to reduce youth violence in communities across the United States.

Do the Write Thing to End Youth Violence
I wanted to check back with this wonderful program I was involved with last year and discovered that their website now includes two minute recordings of winning essays written and recorded by past winners of this teen writing contest that focusses on reducing youth violence. They are well worth listening to!

"The Do the Write Thing Challenge gives middle school students an opportunity to examine the impact of youth violence on their lives."
"The DtWT program also educates adults about the causes of youth violence. Local community groups promote the program at the grassroots level so that teachers, school administrators, parents, coaches, and young people can bring youth violence into the open, where it can be examined and talked about in a constructive way. When students accept the Challenge, they become messengers for their own thoughts and ideas, which are ultimately more powerful than violence."
