An Apology to Brian Teeman

This week, I messed up badly and owe an apology.

I published two video classes that were created by Brian Teeman.

I took Brian’s name, copyright photo and copyright biography and put them on those video classes as the teacher. I didn’t have permission to do that.

8 Things to Know About the Drupal Security Issue

By now you've probably heard about the extremely serious Drupal security issue from mid-October.

The Drupal security team issued a new warning two weeks later that, if possible, escalated the severity of the issue.

Here's an overview of the issue and its impact.

See You at the Joomla World Conference?

The Joomla team are doing something really different with this year's Joomla World Conference.

Instead of being stuck in a cavernous venue with people spread over dozens of different hotels, the team chose a different and more intimate route.

This week's Joomla World Conference is being held a resort in Cancun, Mexico and almost everyone will be staying at the venue. Hopefully this will make for a more social and collaborative conference.

Auto-Update or Die

One of the really interesting and scary things about this month's Drupal issue is how fast the hackers moved.

Hackers moved faster than the vast majority of site-owners could respond.

It took a lot of courage for the security team to say this, but anyone whose site didn't update between 4 pm and 11 pm UTC (London time) on October 15th should assume they were hacked. That timeframe is outside of normal working hours for everyone from Paris to Tokyo.

How to Check Your Drupal Site Security

If you weren't able to update your Drupal site within a few hours on October 15th, you may be worried about your site.

Even under normal conditions, it's almost never possible to prove that a site is 100% safe.

But by checking your site, you can either give yourself some additional peace of mind, or you can confirm that you were hacked.

Node Gallery: The Easiest Drupal Photo Gallery

We have several different Drupal photo gallery tutorials on this blog. The most popular is Views Photo Galleries for Drupal 7, followed closely by an older tutorial, Node Gallery for Drupal 6.

However, although Views is powerful, it is too complex for many users. For this reason, Node Gallery remains very popular.

So we've realized that it's time for an updated tutorial that covers Node Gallery in Drupal 7.

Node Gallery is still the easiest way to build a photo gallery in Drupal. It requires very little set-up and almost no configuration.

Re-name Your WordPress Login Area

One of the most common ways that people attack WordPress sites is via the wp-login.php file.

Hackers try a "brute force attack" where they simply go to your login page and try to login as many times as they can. They try to login to your site using a masterlist of common usernames and passwords.

Every time they access that login page it adds stress to your server. If they're accessing the page multiple times per second, it can significantly slow or even crash your site.

In this video, Topher shows you how to solve this problem via a plugin called "Rename wp-login.php".
