Mel's Review of Shadows in the Silence by Courtney Allison Moulton

Blurb Your strength in heart and hand will fall. . . .
Ellie knows that the darkest moments are still to come, and she has everything to fight for:

She must fight for Will.
The demonic have resorted to their cruelest weapons to put Will in mortal danger, and Ellie makes an unlikely alliance to save him and to stop Lilith and Sammael, who seek to drown the world in blood and tear a hole into Heaven.

She must fight for humanity.
As the armies of Hell rise and gather for the looming End of Days, Ellie and her band of allies travel to the world’s darkest and most ancient regions in her quest to come into her full glory as the archangel Gabriel.

And Ellie must save herself.
Her humanity withers beneath the weight of her cold archangel power, but Ellie must hold tight to who she is and who she loves as she prepares for the ultimate battle for Heaven and Earth.

In this final installment in the Angelfire trilogy, Courtney Allison Moulton brings her dark world of epic battles and blistering romance to a blazing bright conclusion.

Mel's Review 4 PenguinsGood stuff! I am actually a little mad at myself for not reading this book sooner. I got it not realizing it was the final book in a series so I put it off to the side because I was afraid it would be hard to get into and follow since I haven't read any of the previous books. I WAS WRONG! It was a great book with some very interesting characters and the plot was exciting and very easy to follow to the point where I didn't want to put it down. And I admit I was tearing up by the end and needed to stop just to get some tissue. I can only imagine how much more emotionally attached I would have been if I had started reading from the first book. Which I have every intention of going back to read now. All I can say is Well Done Courtney and I am very interested to see what you come out with next! In my opinion definitely recommended.

Have a Happy and Safe 4th of July!

As I sit here preparing food and getting things ready to celebrate our nation's Independance Day with family and friends, I'm reminded of exactly why we celebrate this day. Our soldiers, past and present, have paid and continue to pay a very high price for our freedom. I hope that you take a moment to reflect on that as well today as you are enjoying cookouts, swimming, fireworks and family. I know I will!

As always, until next time...

School's out for Summer...

Many writers including myself will be pondering new ways to juggle our writing careers and spending quality time with the kiddies now that school is out and the babies are home.

This is something that I'm struggling desperately with at the moment. My monkey is a very active eleven year old and for him, Summer means uninterrupted Xbox time, spending days in the pool, with friends at the lake, and a whole lot of mom carting kids around to different places at the same time I need to write, market and get ready for upcoming conventions, signings and book releases.

So... I'm turning to you, my friends, fans and unknown stalkers ;) What ideas do you guys have to balance both jobs this Summer?
Don't be nervous, your suggestion could save an author <3

Make sure you let your friends in on this we need lots of ideas! Don't forget, you can also follow me on these sites:

Narratives. What's the big deal?

Narratives. That tiny word can evoke fear from writers and readers, alike. And, I am no exception to that fear.

Recently, I embarked on a joint writing endeavor with fellow authors, Jennifer Malone Wright and Willow Cross entitled Beary Tales. After countless hours of discussion, mapping and planning-- we decided that this particular story needed to be told from a third person omniscient point of view.

Naturally... I freaked. Yes, I know I said we agreed this P.O.V. was necessary for the story, but it was also my very first time writing in that P.O.V. and all of my fears bubbled up to the surface.

I guess maybe I should backtrack a little first... some of you out there might not understand the subtle and not so subtle differences in P.O.V.'s.

I'm going to give you a shortcut to the definitions of all them. :) On Grossmont College's edu site, Creative Writing Instructor, Karl Sherlock posted THIS article explaining them. Take a few minutes and peruse that piece and then come back here.

Back? Awesome! Okay, now allow me to tell you why I freaked. Typically I write in a first person subjective/limited point of view. And, always in a past tense. Which means I write from one characters point of view-- what he/she feels sees, experiences, thinks, and smells is how my story is told. At the time that I'm writing that story... I AM that character. For me, it lends to the credibility of my story, the character's story. It also allows the reader to connect with our main hero/heroine because the main character is talking to the reader like a friend would speak to them.

When you write a story from a third person point of view, the narrator is an all seeing God of sorts. The narrator tells us the story-- our narrator tells us what each character feels, sees, hears, smells and experiences... but also... their own observations as well. For me it's harder to connect with our m/c(s) and if not done properly, it's confusing as hell!

Personally, I also have a difficult time connecting with characters that are written in the present tense (I pick up the..., I look at the..., etc). THIS is an awesome article on the pros and cons of past/present tense writing. I found it extremely helpful and you may also.

Willow, Jenn and I are well into our story now, and I've learned so many helpful tips, tricks and methodologies in writing third person from them. I will be forever grateful. Because of this, I've expanded my writing abilities and have grown as an author. And, that's what all of us strive for, right? :) Feel free to post a comment about your favorite narrative and why in the section below!

Cover Reveal for Savior (Formerly known as The Birth of Jaiden by Jennifer Malone Wright

Blurb This book was formerly titled "The Birth of Jaiden" It now contains a bit of new content, but is still the same story. It has also gone through another re-edit.

Alexander Lucas is a man of faith, casino owner and vampire. He should be living the Reno high life of riches and immortality. Instead, he wakes each night despising the blood on his hands and begging for a reason to continue on.

The last beat of his heart took place shortly after losing his family to a gruesome and violent death. One snowy night, the creature who had been stalking him finally took his life, in turn giving him the gift of immortality. Yet, immortality to Alex is not a gift, but rather a curse to live in eternal pain.

Nearly a century of tortured existence leads him to a dumpster in a dark alley where he finds a reason for continuing on. Nestled between bits of debris and rubbish a tiny infant wails for help. He calls for his best friend and guardian angel, Danielle, who explains to him that he has been chosen to raise this baby, for she would someday become a very powerful, natural witch. She tells him it is now his job to protect her from the enemy who wants her so badly, yet also to be her father.

Thinking this angel is out of her mind, Alex refuses many times until Danielle convinces him that the enemy, Malcolm and his wife Levine, cannot obtain the child and that they are, indeed attempting to find her. He must keep her safe, because if evil hands raise her than she will grow to possess the power to annihilate them all.

Luckily, Alex is not alone, he has The Higher Collective to assist in his mission. With the combined powers of the Vampires, Angels, Dark Angels, Witches and Warlocks, The Higher Collective prepares for a battle to protect the child from the evil she may possibly inherit.

Mel's Review of Inception by Teal Haviland

BlurbThe world is in danger. Mankind is sinking deeper into darkness it cannot understand.
Demons are easily capturing souls as they lead men and women down dangerous paths from which there is no return, while Javan, one of the Fallen, seeks an ancient book and the power it promises. If he succeeds, humans — and the world as they know it — will be destroyed.

There is someone who is capable of stopping Javan . . .

If she discovers him in time.

Gabrielle is one of the most powerful angels ever created, her job one of the most important. She has come to Earth to learn more about humans and what influences them, and to fight evil she sees growing at an alarming rate. She soon finds herself carelessly distracted with one human in particular, however. Lucas Watkins holds a promise of peace and love for Gabrielle that she never believed she could have again.

As feelings between her and Lucas become more than she can deny, so do the dangers mounting against him. After discovering who Lucas is, and the choice he faces, she realizes Darkness will come for him through demons and fantastical beings he thought only existed in his imaginings — forcing fairytales to become his reality.

Caught between her new mortal ties and ancient immortal responsibilities, Gabrielle must race against what seems to be an ever-quickening clock to learn what she needs to know, protect Lucas, uncover Javan’s plan, and find a way to stop him and all who live in Shadows.

Things become more complex than she ever anticipated, her decisions more critical, and what begins as a quest for information rapidly places her in an even more crucial position within the longest and most important war ever waged.

Join Gabrielle and her allies in a story of love – past and present – fantastical beings, hidden realms, magic, fate, loss, and the fight of good versus evil.

Mel's Review 5 PenguinsWow..just wow! First I have to say I was completely drawn to the cover of this book because it is absolutely gorgeous. But I also have to admit when I first started reading Inception I was a bit nervous because the names in the beginning of the book and its sheer size kind of threw me. I was worried it would be hard to read but man was I wrong! This book flowed so smoothly for me it was an absolute pleasure to read and I found myself taking my time so I didn't miss anything and could absorb everything that was going on. I also quickly realized that they were angels and demons so of course their names would be a bit different. In no time at all I was emotionally attached to Gabby as I watched her struggle with what she knew she needed to do as an angel to save humanity, and her quickly growing feelings for the human Lucas even though she knew they couldn't be together. I was also extremely impressed with all the other creatures and realms involved in this story and hope to see more of them as the series goes on. I especially loved the shifter's realm and all the beautiful detail that was put into it. Besides who wouldn't love some yummy shifters with scottish accents, right? After reading all the incredible detail about the realms, creatures, legends, and even the prophecy I can almost picture an angel whispering all her secrets into Teal's ear for her to put on paper. It makes me think that maybe just maybe all those things on the edges of our dreams or the moving shadows caught out of the corner of our eyes are something more....something we're not suppose to know is there. Teal certainly makes me believe and since the ending of Inception left more questions than it answered I certainly can't wait to see what she has in store for us next! In my opinion absolutely recommended.
