Kidnapped by Maria Hammarblad

Welcome to the blog, Maria! It’s a pleasure to have you here. Can you tell us about your new release, Kidnapped?

MH: Thank you for having me, I’m thrilled to be here!

Kidnapped isn’t really new, it was released as e-book last year, but it will be available in paperback any day now. It is about a girl who gets abducted by mistake. Her kidnapper thinks she’s someone completely different, and by the time he realizes the mix-up they’re too far away to turn back. The heroine, Patricia, strives to go home, of course, but that’s easier said than done when she doesn’t even know where the Earth is. She is about to make powerful enemies, find unexpected friends, and stumble over love where she least expects it.

Sounds interesting! Describe the heroine in three words.

MH: Talkative, innocent, and autophobic. I had to look the last one up; she’s afraid of being alone. That can be a problem when finding oneself on a spaceship with one other living person aboard.

What traits does the hero posses that makes the heroine swoon?

MH: The swooning doesn’t come easy in this book, haha, she’s terrified of him when they first meet. Once she gets to know him, he’s strong, protective, and reliable. He makes her feel safe and cared for.

And that’s most important, right? What was your inspiration for this story?

MH: I’ve been playing with the main ideas since I was a teenager, decades ago. I probably saw something on TV that got stuck in my mind… I come from a small city and spent lots of time on deserted winter roads, and used to wonder, “What if a spaceship would land right here, right now?” It might not be a normal thing to think about, but it’s the way I’m wired. My brain plays the “what if” game all the time.

Also, a big chunk of inspiration comes from the song “Misguided Angel” by Cowboy Junkies. It starts, “Mama, he’s crazy and he scares me, but I want him by my side. Though he’s wild and he’s bad and sometimes just plain mad, I need him to keep me satisfied.” The lyrics clicked with my imagination and helped form the hero’s personality. He’s… not like people in general, LOL!

Who is your favorite character from Kidnapped? Can you include an excerpt involving this character?

MH: That’s a difficult question, I’m fond of so many of them. I do like Veronica, though. She’s the evil queen of the story and I think these few lines convey her personality pretty well.

Veronica smiled as warmly as was possible for her, making it look almost natural, and squeezed her hand. “I’m so glad you’re being cooperative. I knew you would get to see things my way.”

The way the Supreme Commander touched her cheek reminded Patricia of someone being kind to a favorite pet.

What genres do you write in, and what appeals to you about those genres?

MH: I write mostly science fiction romance but also some contemporary/suspense. I’ve always been intrigued with sci-fi and space, ever since I was a little girl, and romance, well… relations between people are interesting!

Oh, I can relate. What other titles do you have published?

MH: Undercover - a contemporary romance - When Jenny Moore meets Alexei Roshenko, it’s love at first sight. The tall, dark and handsome stranger appears to be the answer to every romantic fantasy any woman ever had. There is however more to him than meets the eye, and a dark and violent past is catching up with him. When Jenny decides to follow him back to Russia, she gets entangled in a web of deceit and secrets beyond her wildest imagination.

Courage and retribution - free Kidnapped prequel available from the Desert Breeze Publishing - On the outskirts of the ever present Alliance’s watchful eye, William Reynolds has served as mayor and preacher for the better part of a decade. Life is good, and he sees no reason to change anything. When a family fleeing the Alliance’s oppression comes his way he doesn’t hesitate to hide them. Reaching out to the people in need proves to be more dangerous than he could ever have anticipated, and once events are set in motion, there is no going back.

Embarkment 2577 - self-published series of novellas – “Brand New World,” “High Gravity,” and “Adam and Eve.” The first book is a sci-fi spoof. Most readers realize it’s written tongue in cheek when the main character encounters a hologram of a rock star, but some don’t share my sense of humor and write angry e-mails, LOL! I had stopped giggling somewhat when I wrote the other two, so they’re more serious and get better reviews…

I also used to have a series of books called “The Goddess’s Saga” but I’m currently re-writing and re-editing all of them. They’ll show up again later this year, in a new and improved form. These books are science fiction romance sprinkled with mythology.

I have a series like that, too. What are you working on now?

MH: I have a lot going on right now. I’m working on edits for a book called Flashback that will be released in June. This is a contemporary romance about a war veteran suffering from PTSD. I’m also working on a sci-fi romance called Operation Earth that will be released in August, and a still unnamed project with the working name Borealis XII that will be released in November.

My mind is a restless thing, so I’m also writing on a few projects I hope to have ready for 2014. There are a couple of sci-fi romances and two almost done contemporary novels.

Can you describe your daily writing routine?

MH: It’s a little complicated – I have a daytime job and go to school full time for a Bachelor’s Degree besides writing, but I’ll be done with the university in another couple of months and that will be a relief. Normally, I start the day with walking dogs, grab a large cup of coffee, and browse through my social media stuff real quick. Then I write for as long as real life will allow me. I create better in the mornings and edit better in the evenings, for some reason, so I try to plan my days to have at least a couple of hours free every morning.

Often when I’m done with the day, I sit in the sofa with noise-cancelling headphones while my husband watches TV and edit.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

MH: I’m somewhere in between. I usually write the beginning and the end of the book and I have a plan for what should happen in the middle, but somewhere after the first couple of chapters the characters take over, and anything can happen. I’ve had problems with them falling for the wrong person lately.

What genres do you enjoy reading?

MH: I read a lot of suspense and horror, and I love thrillers and mystery. I read science fiction and romance too, but my bookshelves are crammed with scary stuff.

Do you belong to a critique group or have critique partners? If so, what have you learned from them? How has it affected your writing?

MH: I don’t belong to a formal critique group, more from lack of discipline than anything else – I am a member of the Florida Writer’s Association and the friendly chapters around me invite me to their meetings, but I never get around to going…

I do have a wonderful critique partner in author Christy Elkins. Without her support I still wouldn’t be published. Every time I start a project I send it over to her for feedback and advice, and she has taught me so much.

Another person who has been invaluable to me is Gail R. Delaney from Desert Breeze Publishing. I still have a lot to learn from her, and I hope to get to work with her for a long time yet to come.

Maria HammarbladWhere can my readers find you on the web?

MH: Website | Blog | Facebook | Twitter

I have pages in places I can’t even remember, but these four I keep updated and check obsessively.

Where can my readers find your books?

MH: My books are available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, everywhere e-books are sold. Sony bookstore, iBooks…  Any bookstore will be able to sell the paperbacks.

On Amazon, you can find:

Embarkment 2577 | Kidnapped | Undercover

Courage and Retribution is currently only available from the Desert Breeze Publishing website, but it’s free.

That’s great! Thank you so much for stopping by, Maria!

Leaders and Followers – Guest Post by Azura Ice, author of Sacrifices #scifirom #timetravel #western

Leaders and Followers
Written by Azura Ice a.k.a. F.L. Bicknell

If I was part of a small team, I’m afraid I’d be the one person who would either be the leader or I’d piss off the other members and end up the outcast. LOL, I’m a natural leader, but sometimes more than one such person is in a single group and more than one cook in the kitchen often causes problems.

Astronauts and cosmonauts are paired up according to several rules, but one is compatibility with the other team members. A leader is chosen who can command without it going to his or her head. I have a strong personality, and although I believe in compromise, I also believe the nut who does stupid things and threatens the safety of everyone else should be tossed out the nearest airlock.

Hey, just saying, lol.

Conquering Venus by Azura Ice & Maria MoonstarThis brings me to Venus, the heroine in Conquering Venus. Since she’s been alone for so long, she’s accustomed to being the decision maker. As a result, the two huge, Azutuan alien men who show up and start throwing their weight around cause sparks to fly. Venus’ temper blows—a lot.

Then security officers arrive on the base these warriors have established on Earth. Not only does Venus have to adjust to her two new mates, she realizes the entire race of Azutuan men are alpha males.

In Sacrifices, book 2, Miln and his younger mate help set up the security for the base. Now he’s faced with the same problem Venus has, but the difference is that he’s the alpha this time and his mate, Oshki, believes Miln always puts the welfare of others before their love. Things escalate and Miln wonders if he has mistaken lust for love.

However, Miln must go to the year 1847 with his partner, who is furious with him, and bring back a deranged scientist bent on twisting time and frigging up the future. It’s tough being a natural leader. Worse, sometimes being a leader or alpha forces you to make decisions you’d never make if you were a follower.

There are leaders in jobs and in the military. Even groups of hikers or friends have one person who assumes the role of the head person whether he or she realizes it or not.

What about you, dear reader? Are you a leader or a follower—and why?

Giveaway:

The reader who offers the best, most interesting answer will win a copy of book 1 of the Sky Streamer Series, Conquering Venus. It’s m/f/m. For more info on book 1, visit THIS LINK.

Sacrifices by Azura IceNew Release, book 2, Sacrifices

m/m – heat 5 – time-travel, paranormal, historical, western, sci-fi

Miln and Oshki travel to the year 1847 where they track down Randle Nyerscot, a potential killer, but their journey into the past isn’t the lovers’ getaway they thought it would be. Miln soon realizes there’s trouble in their historical paradise. It’s his duty to protect others, but his new, much-younger mate insists their love should always come first, setting them at odds with one another.

With the help of a local, Miln discovers an orphanage held hostage and a killer injecting victims with the Bone Eater virus. Forced to make drastic decisions, he must fight for everyone’s lives to save future Earth.

But can he make amends with Oshki? Or will Miln be forced to choose duty over love once more?

The Ranch vs. The Small Farm

I live in a small city with a population just above 30K. And surrounding the city is farmland. Acres and acres of fields, barns, and a variety of livestock. But unlike in the West, the farms here are smaller plots of land. We don’t have large chunks of land where cattle and horses roam. No, they are restricted to their fields.

BUT the one thing that remains the same is the hard work dedication of the people who own and work on the farms. It is not an easy job, and requires a 24/7 commitment, especially on a dairy farm.

Accidental Romance - a New Adult Romance by Jessica E. SubjectMy most recent release, Accidental Romance, is the story of a young woman who looses her hand in a farming accident. She must depend on her family and the farmhand to help her adjust to her new situation. Here’s an excerpt from when Leanne is still in the hospital after her accident:

“I won’t be working in the parlor, barns, or even in the fields, Jake. That dream is over.”

“Bullshit.” He turned in his chair and stared at her with his deep blue eyes. “You’ve wanted to run the farm for as long as I’ve known you. You can’t give up because of one little accident.”

“It wasn’t a little accident. My hand got shredded into tiny pieces, and as everyone likes to remind me, I could’ve died.”

He clasped her face in his palms. “But you didn’t. Thank God, you didn’t.”

She gasped and leaned back from his reach. Both the intensity of his gaze and the attention of everyone else in the cafeteria left her ready to bolt. She pushed up from the table. “I need to go back to my room.”

“Leanne, wait.”

She made it to the elevators before he caught up with her and grasped her left arm. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

She yanked free. “No. I was normal before, never attracting much attention.” Including from guys. “But since I lost an appendage, everyone stares. And you—one minute you look at me as though I’m about to break and the next like you’re ready to sweep me off my feet. Everything’s changed, Jake, so how can I be okay?”

The doors opened, and she rushed inside. She wanted to be left alone. But he darted in beside her. “We’re friends, right?”

“Yeah, I guess.” What was he getting at?

He raised his eyebrows. “You guess?”

“Fine,” she sighed. “You are a friend. A good friend.”

“Then trust I’m here for you. Now and forever.”

Her chest tightened and tears welled in her eyes. As much as she wanted to hear those words from him, from everyone, she couldn’t say them in return. She wasn’t the same person.

Hump Day Hook for February 20 from Made For Her #scifi #military #romance #HDH

Hump Day HookGood day! Here’s another excerpt Made For Her, an erotic science fiction romance.

I’m skipping ahead this week. Mikayla just found out that her husband had been cloned. And the clone of him has been sent to her to train.

She is confronting her commanding officer.

Made For Her by Jessica E. SubjectGeneral Madison wiped a hand across his face. “Mikayla, the clone in your squadron is the thirty-second clone made with Daniel’s DNA. He’s D32.”

“And you’ve kept them from me all along?” She dug her fingers into the leather. How had she never found out? “What happened to the rest?”

“The early ones didn’t survive. Those that lived stayed in the labs to help Onatria create better and better clones.”

The information left her mind spinning, and she struggled to breathe. “So why is this one out of the lab and in my squadron? Why couldn’t he be trained by someone else, somewhere else?”

General Madison smiled, and she had a feeling she wasn’t going to like his answer. “Because he wanted to be trained by the best. You are our best instructor and have turned out our best pilots. Why would we send him anywhere else?”

Please welcome @LaynaPimentel with her debut release, A Gift From Fate #fantasy #eroticromance

Please welcome, Layna Pimentel to my blog today. She is not only my critique partner, she is an awesome friend, and this past week has been super exciting for her.

Welcome, Layna! It’s such a pleasure to have you on my blog to celebrate your debut release. Tell us about A Gift From Fate.

A Gift From Fate by Layna PimentelLP: Thank you for having me Jessica. It’s always a blast in coming here. Here’s the blurb from A Gift From Fate:

After colliding with a stunning vision in white, retired Staff Sergeant Brent Daniels offers to drive the beautiful stranger to a hotel for the night, but instead discovers he’s with one very lost creature. He’s bewitched by her sinful curves, her dark and mesmerizing eyes, and the pull at his soul with each minute passing. Nevertheless, he can’t shake the feeling she’s hiding something.

Melpomene, daughter of Zeus, finds her handsome rescuer resembles the man who has continuously haunted her dreams. Before long, she’s in his arms, wanting more. Knowing their days are numbered, desperation leads her to reach out for help by an unlikely ally.

Just how far will these two lovers go, and what will they sacrifice to be together?

Oh, how far will they go? *grins* Describe Melpomene in three words.

LP: Sexy, Ethereal, Passionate.

What traits does Brent posses that makes Melpomene swoon?

LP: He’s hot for one, and his confidence is what makes him a keeper.

My kind of hero! What was your inspiration for this story?

LP: I wanted to write a story about a mythological character that we don’t here often of, and when you have the Muse of Tragedy saying pick me! How could I refuse?

Who is your favorite character from this book? Can you include an excerpt involving this character?

LP: Both my main characters are my favorites, but I’ll certainly indulge everyone with a scene from Melpomene’s point of view:

Atropos, the Fate who severed the Thread of Life, forced her thoughts upon Melpomene. For the love of Zeus, child, why do you trespass into our domain?

A chill enveloped her, compelling her to a halt only a few feet away from the crone.

“Leave her be, sister.”

The same flutter of air from her chamber whirled around the spot she stood frozen. With a flowing white gown and a crown of dark curls held in place by laurels, Clotho embodied motherhood, nurturing when required. Nevertheless, her primary role of determining the length of one’s lifespan remained in the back of Melpomene’s mind.

“You’ve come. You seek. Your dream is a prophecy of what is to come. Do you truly wish to foresee what your future holds, Melpomene?”

Words escaped Melpomene, leaving her unsure of how to proceed. In her peripheral vision, she caught them surrounding her.

“Trapped between both worlds,” Clotho said woefully.

“His time has long since passed,” Atropos chided.

“But your passion will be both a beginning and an end,” Lachesis added.

What on Mt. Olympus are they talking about?

Overwhelmed and uncertain of their meaning, Melpomene attempted to sidestep and couldn’t as the Moirai closed in.

“You have but three days to experience and let go. Be sure to comprehend that the mortal is nothing but a conflict of interest. He has no place in our world, nor you in his. However, there may be an opportunity to leave this life and start another.”

“Wait. Three days to experience what?” she stammered.

All three Fates assumed their positions by Atropos’ spindle of life as Clotho whispered, “This is my gift to you, daughter of Zeus. But heed our warning. Should you speak your name, you can be assured there are those who will hear it on Mt. Olympus. Tis known, no daughter of Zeus should ever consummate with a mortal without his blessing. Tis known, Zeus shows no mercy to those who defy him. God or mortal, if you are discovered, you will be punished severely.”

Great excerpt! How long have you been writing with the hopes of publication?

LP: I’ve been writing seriously since 2009. It’s been a long road, but so worth the wait.

What genres do you write in, and what appeals to you about those genres?

LP: I write paranormal, historical and erotic romances. I’ve always been drawn to the supernatural and I’m very fond of reading sweet and sexy romance novels. So why not write what I know, right? ;-)

True! What other titles do you have published?

LP: I have another paranormal erotic romance slated to come out in April with Secret Cravings Publishing. Hardened Desire focuses on Luc Mercier, who is a gargoyle more than a few centuries old. He falls deeply in love with a mortal, after swearing off love back in 1918.

I loved that story! What are you working on now?

LP: I’m working on the second book in my Pleasure Garden Follies series.

Where do your best ideas come from?

LP: Most of my ideas come from music, and historical documentaries, as odd as it may sound.

Hey, I think ideas can come for anywhere. :) What is the best piece of advice you would give to aspiring authors?

LP: Never give up. It’s a long road with many bumps. The struggle makes you appreciate the process even more, and you meet wonderful people who help you along the way.

Great advice! Where can my readers find you?

LP: Website | Twitter | Facebook | Google+

Where can my readers find your books?

LP: www.secretcravingspublishing.com

Thank you for dropping by, Layna! I wish you many sales with your new release, and I look forward to more great stories from you. :)

A Gift From Fate by Layna PimentelAnd here’s another excerpt!

“My name is Melp—Mel Pomene.” She’d nearly given herself away. Zeus, her father, would have heard had she whispered her name. Her father. Heavens, he’d turn the mortal realm upside down if he suspected she was here. And right now, she desired nothing more than to stay a little longer. With any lucky, I’ll return before he notices.

“Well, Mel, it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Your last name is rather unusual. I assume you’re not from these parts?”

His question silenced any thoughts drifting through her mind at that moment. A new kind of tension rose within her. She couldn’t disclose her origins or who she was. Guilt settled in her stomach for leaving her sisters behind, but she wasn’t given a choice. The Fates dropped her here, only mentioning an experience for three days…provided Zeus didn’t find out. Only the Gods knew what he’d do if he found her cavorting around without a proper escort.

“Earth to Mel? Are you all right?”

“Yes, I am. I’m just thinking of home, which is Greece. I’ve come to the United States for an adventure, it would seem.”

He chuckled before she’d finished speaking.

“What is so amusing?”

“The mere mention of seeking adventure after getting lost is rather comical, nothing else, sweetheart.” He removed his right hand from the wheel and petted her knee. The warmth of his hand stirred an unfamiliar emotion within. This was the man from her dream. Those hands had touched parts of her body no mortal would have dared, and here she sat, wishing he’d do more than pat her.

She jumped as a smack of thunder echoed through the truck. Rain pounded on the roof, making the hair on the back of her neck stand on end. The sound grated on her nerves, but she was ever so grateful to be in the vehicle with him.

He appeared agitated with each crack of lightning. She noticed his knuckles blanching against the black wheel, so strong was his grip. Melpomene glared out the windshield. Clouds darkened as if night descended upon them, only missing the stars, and trees whipped violently in the wind. Terror gripped her.

“Looks like we’re going to have to pull over, Mel. I can’t see where we’re going, and the roads are slick. Anything can happen out here. We’ll be safer this way.”

Melpomene pursed her lips together. She sensed he meant well. One of her many talents as a goddess was the ability to hear one’s inner thoughts. While she disliked using the ability, tonight it proved beneficial. “How long do you think the storm will last?”

“I’m not sure, sugar.” He yawned and stretched his arms behind him.

Dark circles etched his eyes as he fought a second yawn. Melpomene unbuckled the seatbelt and slid closer to him. The urge to touch him and run her fingers down his face was unprecedented. He blinked with shock but sat there motionless while she stroked his brow. Who’d have thought, underneath that rough exterior, you’d be honorable.

She wanted to wrap herself in his arms, possess his mouth. An urgency to become lost in his affections and attention ruled every cell in her being. “When was the last time you slept, Brent?”

“Yesterday, for two hours.”

She shook her head. “No. I mean, an uninterrupted, dreamless slumber, leaving you refreshed.” Her voice softened to a whisper.

“Not since before my last tour. Give or take fourteen months ago.”

“Brent, you need your rest. One cannot function with only two hours of sleep. Please, close your eyes for a bit. An extra hour or so won’t make a difference.”

A long and shaky yawn escaped his lips, when he whispered groggily, “How does someone as young as you come across so doting and motherly?”

Now there was a thought. He had mistaken her youthful look for an inexperienced young lady—mortal. Brent couldn’t have been more wrong, but they’d sort out the misconception soon enough.

“I can assure you, Brent, I am most certainly not young by any means.”

Before he could argue, she pressed a finger to his lips. “Sleep.”

Interview with @OliviaStarke, author of the upcoming release, Dirty Love #1NightStand #romance

Welcome Olivia! It’s a pleasure to have you on my blog. For those who don’t know, Olivia is one-third of the team that created the 1Night Stand series. Olivia, can you tell us about your upcoming release?

OS: My newest upcoming release is titled Dirty Love my latest 1Night Stand story for Decadent Publishing. I’ve yet to get cover art or a definite release day, but stay tuned everyone! It’s an erotic paranormal romance, action packed, with a few twists and turns to keep you reading :)

1NS blog header long

Oh, can’t wait! Describe the heroine in three words.

OS: Snarky, Feisty, Determined

What traits does the hero posses that makes the heroine swoon?

OS: He’s kind, considerate, and a gentleman, things the heroine didn’t realize she wanted in a man.

What was your inspiration for this story?

OS: Not sure, it just popped into my head.

Who is your favorite character from this book? Can you include an excerpt involving this character?

OS: I love Kat, my heroine. She’s a bit immature in the beginning, but she has fire. And she grows by the end of the story.

While upstairs, Kat had spotted wildness in Jared which frightened her a little. He couldn’t hurt her, it’d be physically impossible for someone like him to go further than she wanted. But whatever lay just beneath his collected exterior fired her up, and promised one hell of a night.

Several lust drugged eyes settled on them and she grinned, indulging in their looks of disbelief. She turned to her date. Tracing her palms up his shirtfront, she enjoyed the feel of well-toned muscle beneath the conventional cotton polo. His scent enveloped her, earthy mixed with pure male. Strong and unique to him, it made butterflies beat her insides. His hands covered hers.

“You’re not what I expected, Miss Monroe.” He smiled and her heart galloped. In the lowered lighting of the room his silvery eyes appeared luminescent.

“That’s the idea.” She lifted on tiptoes, lacing her fingers through the cropped strands of his hair. He lowered meeting her lips….

Dreaming in Blue by Olivia StarkeWhat are you working on now?

OS: My giant partially finished WIP file! I have a little bit of everything in it, and I’m determined to get all them out by the end of the year. NO starting something new until then.

Oh, I have a list like that, too. Can you describe your daily writing routine?

OS: On good writing days I write pretty much from the time I get up to when I go to bed. On days I have other things to do I squeeze writing in.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

OS: I’m 80% pantser, but am trying to be more plotter with my longer stories. I’m hoping to get 2 full lengths contracted this year. With full lengths you almost have to plot or you write yourself into dead ends. Which I’ve learned the HARD way.

Where do your best ideas come from?

OS: Out of the blue usually, it’s weird how a writer’s mind works. I’ll be doing some random thing like the dishes or walking the dogs and BOOM there it is.

What is your favorite book that you’ve read?

OS: Fiction: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. Loved it since high school and love it today. I also adore Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.  Non-fiction: How To Be A Woman by Caitlin Moran a hilarious and bawdy British feminist.  If you’re easily offended I wouldn’t recommend her lol

Where can my readers find you?

OS: www.authoroliviastarke.com

www.facebook.com/olivia.starke.3

I’m also on Goodreads but don’t ask me the link because I never go on Goodreads anymore.

Where can my readers find your books?

The easiest would be my website to find all the links to ebook sellers  www.authoroliviastarke.com
