The Think Piece Interview: Megan Falley
TP: The first line in your poem “Backhand Apology” is so striking: “I am sorry I am woman.” I’m curious when you knew that was the line that would open the book, that sentiment.
MF: I wrote that poem in a workshop led by the poet Angel Nafis, who is a genius and a literary hero. I had no idea that it would make it into Redhead and the Slaughter King at the time. When I was setting up the conceit of the book — the five chapters told in reverse chronological order — I knew I had to open with something that brought the reader into exactly where I am right now, at this moment. And that was the place. A false apology for my existence, which ends with bleeding on everything.

Happy International Women’s Day from Speak Like a Girl!
Why do you need feminism? We wanna know!

Once, I taught a workshop on slut-shaming at a middle school and a seventh grade girl raised her hand every time I asked a question and every time, she gave beautiful, eloquent answers. It was the first time I’d ever heard a twelve-year old use the word “objectification”. The last time she raised her hand, she stopped speaking mid-sentence and when I asked her why, she said, “Because they don’t like it when I talk so much.” I asked who and she pointed to everyone in the room. “Nobody likes it.” When the class was over, she left before I could meet with her. But with some persistence, I figured out her name and where her next class would be. I found her there, in the back of a class room, quiet in her desk. I told her one thing, “Please, never stop talking. If they tell you stop, talk louder.” And I hope she did. I so desperately hope she never stopped.
Today, on International Women’s Day, I give you one of my favorite quotes by the always-quotable Audre Lorde:
"I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood."
Speak loud today and every day. Speak Like a Girl, my friends.
Olivia Gatwood everybody.

"Fat Girl" is the most incredible poem I have ever heard in my life I can't stop listening to it on YouTube
thank you! i hope you have many “LIGHTS ON” moments in your life. forever.
Hi Megan! I recently started following you and I like what you do. Spank Space was amazing haha... I also really liked your cover of Faith, and it sounded really good. How did you record/mix it?
lately i’ve been dabbling in art that isn’t my main vocation: fiction, cover songs, & goofy parodies with andrew gibby. i’m glad you dig them. i recorded “faith” on garageband in two tracks, listening and harmonizing with myself for some multi-vocal layering. then i put the “live performance” filter on it which added a little haunt. i’ve posted a couple more mini-covers on my instagram: @meganfalley. hope you enjoy them.
I wanted to say I read your Redhead and the Slaughter King poetry book. And it was so lovely and heartbreaking. Forgive me if writing out your poem wasn't something you wanted. But I do book reviews each year so I wanted to link to one of my favorite poems
Thank you so much for your sweetness. I would love to read you book review, please tag me if that’s a thing that is!
