Consultation
The doctor says you’re twenty-four
and you’ve been living like this for ten years?
You must be so anxious for this surgery.
And I remember the first bra, my mom
tossing it to me in a dressing room,
bribing me before I could throw
a tantrum in the store. And I remember
how they grew and I tried to ignore it,
stopped looking down in the shower.
And I remember the sports bra, and changing
in the bathroom for gym. And I remember
the ace bandage and how it slipped down
during class and the terror drumming
through my body louder than my math teacher.
And I remember the first time I tried
to pull a binder over my head and
how I knew what it was to be trapped.
And I remember the bathroom scissors,
how I decided in the mirror that if I was going
hurt one part of me, it would be the part
I hated the most, and how some of me prayed
I’d have the guts to saw them off myself.
And I remember waiting and wishing and wanting.
But I also remember swimming anyway. But I also
remember how flat I felt in the first synthetic cage,
how I ran my palm down my cotton shirt and smiled.
But I also remember the first mouth on my nipple,
the shiver shouting down to my curling toes.
I remember the first shower and pressing all of myself
up against another body. I remember being naked
and not hating myself. That these things I want
to toss away are not enemies,
but rather something I wish to love
as ghosts, memories I can never touch again.
And I know she is expecting me to gush
yes, I’ve been waiting for so long.
And it wouldn’t be a lie.
And it would not be the entire truth.

BOULDER, CO! My very good friend Megan Falley is performing at Innisfree Poetry Bookstore, FEB 19th, 7pm. It is going to be fantastic, and I think she’s gonna let me hop on the mic for one or two poems. As Megan is a contributor to the WE WILL BE SHELTER anthology I recently edited, Innisfree has ordered a bunch of copies and we will both be there signing and chatting and drinking coffee too late in the day to be drinking coffee.
