The Mermaid's Daughter
By Megan Falley

The Mermaid's Daughter
By Megan Falley
:

speckeh:

It’s true, sometimes she would comb her hair with a fork
at the dinner table rather than actually eat. Sometimes
she would bathe a whole day. Sometimes I caught her
whispering to the goldfish, but mostly she was a regular mom.
She drove me to swimming lessons and went to the movies
and criticized herself in mirrors so I would learn to do it too.
Even after she cut herself loose from the net of her marriage-
we never spoke of the deal she made to fishhook my father into love.
She got her voice back, but still-when she started dating again,
I watched her catch new men
the old way.

-Megan Falley, from her newest collection, Redhead and the Slaughter King (Write Bloody Publishing 2014).

"After 6 weeks of working with Megan Falley, I feel as though my poetic instincts have been..."

“After 6 weeks of working with Megan Falley, I feel as though my poetic instincts have been sharpened. Working with Megan has forced me to think critically about each word, line break, or idea that I put on the page, so that my poems have become clearer and more effective. Her counsel ranges from the sweeping advice to read and write regularly, to the very practical tips necessary for taking a poem from an idea to a polished piece. She is encouraging, kind, and generous, but don’t be fooled — her desire to see each poem come to life is ruthless and unstoppable, and she spares no expense in doing so. Taking a course with Megan will not be easy, but it will certainly be worth it. -”

i made a little slow sad cover of george michael’s ‘faith.’ i don’t play an instrument except the one in my throat, which i’m learning to clear the dust from. if you listen to this before you sleep or put it on a mix cd for someone you think is magic, then my tiny child dreams did come true. the photo i used for the album art is a picture i snapped of my favorite piece of art ever, “untitled [portrait of Ross in L.A.]” by felix gonzalez-torres. thank you for opening your ears. i love you.

jeanannverlee:

"Jeanann Verlee’s second book, SAID THE MANIC TO THE MUSE, takes a deeper, more focused look at the erratic, whimsical, ominous, and sometimes perilous ways manic depression functions. Introduced through the careful prophecy of three archetypes: Medea, Jezebel, and Kali—each a woman largely misrepresented and wholly misunderstood—these poems detail the story of one woman’s struggle to maintain both strength and sanity in the face of abandonment and aging. From dangerous trysts and barroom brawls to ‘grief-induced psychosis,’ SAID THE MANIC TO THE MUSE recounts the year she lost everything, including her mind."
