NOVEMBER POETRY PROMPT #1
Is inspired by Anne Sexton’s poem “All My Pretty Ones.” [http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/171277]
First off, the quickest way to get better as a writer is to read more. So read this Sexton poem. Then write a poem that somehow incorporates the line of the idea of the line “all my pretty ones”. Are you writing an ode to the pictures of celebrities you taped up in your locker in high school? Perhaps it’s a love poem to your favorite freckles. Maybe it’s what you’ll refer to a collection of something of yours as, or a persona poem about something creepy! Whatever it is, have fun, get loose, and if you use the Sexton line - make sure you credit her brilliant & wicked brain.

FOR WRITERS & WANT-TO-WRITE-WRITERS:
This month is National Novel Writing Month [ NaNoWriMo from here on out ] and the big challenge is to write an entire novel (50,000 words!) in a month! For the first time ever, I am partaking and I am so thrilled to stretch myself in this new direction. Novels are THE DEAL.
However, a lot of my poetry friends take the time in this month to write a poem every day (go you! you’re also rockstars!) just like we often do in April, and while I’ve written a poem every day so far this year and will continue to this month alongside you - I thought I’d help out by posting a new poetry prompt for y’all every day to get you through.
So check back here daily for prompts & inspiration, like this page, share with your friends who are also taking the challenge.
Whether you’re writing a novel, a collection of poems, or just not shaving this month, I’m rooting for you!

THE SUIT
The suit was probably a hand-me-down from my brother,
and I’m not sure where I got the briefcase, or the shoes,
but the baseball cap was my own: a relic from the years
I spent trying to be a trophy for my father’s shelf and failing.
Benched by my own dad.
The other girls were what they always were:
fairies, barbies, princesses and dolls, some babies
for the third year in a row. But I didn’t want to be
something so helpless, so kitten.
I pressed the stick-on mustache above my lip
and ran my finger along it, remembered the time
my brother cried because dad shaved his off —
he didn’t recognize him without the furry badge
that made him father.
I’m not sure if I shoved a sock in my underwear
or not, but I walked like I had,
like I inherited the earth.
The other boys tried to one-up each other
with who was dressed the most powerful: the cop,
the Power Ranger, the ninja, the shark.
But I knew, as they had taught me in school,
as life would constantly remind me—a ribbon
wrapped around my finger so tightly it draws blood—
I was the most powerful thing I could be. I was a man.
I didn’t ask sweetly for the with a curtsy or a please.
I jabbed my hand into the bowl.
I took.
