mileswalser:

Hey friends!

Recently I started feeling supremely bummed that I didn’t have any good documentation of my voice/face/body/etc from the early parts of my Testosterone journey. I felt too shy when I was beginning my physical transition to document it via youtube, figured nobody wanted to see my progress, etc etc.

Well I’ve called bull for 2 reasons:

1. I watched other peoples youtube transition videos ALL THE TIME. Everytime I hear another trans person explain how they’ve reacted to hormones, etc, I feel connected to my community and validated in my journey.

2. We are our best resources. There’s just not a lot of literature or research on the effects of hormone therapy. I think if I can document as much of my transition as possible, I can help add to the community bank of knowledge.

So starting today, I’m going to be actively using my YouTube channel to post videos about my physical transition. I’m saying goodbye to any sort of shame or embarrassment I had about transitioning and hey how ya doin’ to being a more active member of my community. I’m in the beginnings of my journey towards top surgery, and my plan is to carefully document that process and do my best to help make the process a little easier for anyone who follows after me.

This video is mostly an intro, but also talks about how I set up my first consultation and why!

If you ever have any questions or comments or want me to address anything specific in a future video, just message me! I’ll be posting more poem videos as well, and just trying to stay awake and stay active in my communities.

I feel I’ve been quiet too long, and I’m for sure done with that.

On Lena Dunham and All That

On Lena Dunham and All That:

roxanegay:

I have been asked about my thoughts on Lena Dunham, so here they are. I am rambling and disjointed here because I am still thinking through all this. I am only speaking for myself and many people are going to disagree with my point of view and that’s okay. We’re not always going to agree but I do…

HEY FLORIDIANS!

I am looking to book shows in your state in early-mid December. Preferably in the Tampa/St Pete’s area, then the Delray/Boca maybe even Miami area. If you go to college or are a part of a venue in one of these cities (or have a contact who is?) please send me an e-mail and let’s make the poems happen.

Writing unapologetic, fierce feminist group poems with Olivia...

Writing unapologetic, fierce feminist group poems with Olivia Gatwood was the highlight of my summer. Getting to perform them on final stage in front of thousands of people was a very important gift. Seeing this poem now, in a world where misogyny doesn’t seem to ever take a seat, is a reminder of why some poems need to be loud and delivered with one of your best friends and teammates standing beside you. This is “Say No.”

NOVEMBER POETRY PROMPT #3:

In honor of PANK publishing four of my Lana Del Rey poems today, I’m going to share with you some goodness based on my infinite puffy-mouthed muse. Make a list of 10 things you do fairly often, some basic and some extraordinary. This list can include things like: braid your hair, take a bath, play the drums in your basement band, have a one night stand, etc.

Then, consider this nutty Lana Del Rey quote: “We have nothing to lose, nothing to gain, nothing we desired anymore - except to make our lives into a work of art.”

Write a poem from an outsider’s perspective (think birdwatcher, sportscaster, intrusive and omnipotent narrator) who is describing one of the activities you listed above (and you in the act of doing it) from the third person perspective, as if it were a work of art.

Some phrases you might use are:

"Notice how she…"
"Watch as our subject…"
"In a rare moment we can find him…"

HAVE THE MOST FUN YOU WORK OF ART, YOU.

POEMS BOUT LANA DEL REY

POEMS BOUT LANA DEL REY:

PANK Magazine published FOUR of my Lana Del Rey poems today, which will also be in my forthcoming chapbook, ‘Bad Girls, Honey’ coming out on Tired Hearts Press next year.

I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling like the baddest girl in NYC.

NOVEMBER POETRY PROMPT #2:

To get into the spirit of Halloween (the only holiday I really celebrate), I made Miles Walser watch some not-so-scary-scary movies with me. One of them, of course, was The Craft. One of my favorite lines in the movie (no spoiler) is when a bus driver says to a gang of witches departing the bus, “watch out for the weirdos”, and the head witch replies with “We are the weirdos, Mister.”

Today, try writing a poem that borrows that line or that concept. Who are the weirdos in your life? Is this a poem in defense of you family, or in celebration of your artsy group of friends back in high school? Maybe this is a poem about poets.

Have fun and celebrate your weirdness. It’s what makes you, you!
