New Social Network for Authors and Readers: I Have High Hopes
Lately, everyone has been complaining because Facebook is pretty much useless anymore as far as marketing our work. In fact, I don’t even get to see my friends posts unless I click on something of theirs at some point. Unless we pay for our posts to be promoted, hardly anyone sees it and even then I’m not sure if they are really seeing it.
As an author, the decline in Facebook views has caused a huge decline in my sales. I know that that other authors and those who use Facebook to advertise for their businesses have had this same impact.
For months now, we have been complaining, but we all stick around FB, hoping that something will change, but also because we have few other options to explore as far as a network like Facebook.
Well, finally, someone has started a new social network that is very much like FB, but geared toward writers and readers, as well as those affiliated with the market, like bloggers, cover designers and editors.
What is this new social network?
It’s called Booktropolous Social. Click the link there to check it out and don’t forget to add me as a friend too!
I truly have high hopes for this new social network. I think with the frustration that Facebook has caused us that everyone involved in the book world will be running their way. This site has soooo much potential right now and I’m excited to have joined. I am still learning my way around the site in my spare time, but it doesn’t look too difficult.
So go check it out and spread the word.

E.L. Todd
My journey to this profession was slightly unorthodox. I received my bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, worked as an award-winning researcher, and worked various jobs to pay the bills. While I enjoyed every moment of this adventure, it wasn’t my passion. I’ve been writing since I was a young girl and have read anything that I can get my hands on. When people ask me what my favorite book is, I always respond, “All of them.”
After I showed my work to my closest friends and gained their confidence, I realized that this is something I could commit my life to, something that I love. I never imagined–dreamed–that I could make a living as a writer. This is the greatest profession that I ever could have asked for, and I am so thankful for the support from everyone in my life. How many other jobs let you work in your pajamas?
I’m very grateful that I’ve had success with my various series. The Forever and Always Series is very close to my heart. I realize all the characters are fictitious, but in reality, they are real people living in my mind…as creepy as that sounds.
The Hawaiian Crush Series, The Essence Series, The Soul Saga, and the Southern Love Series are all also extensions of who I am, just played out in word. It’s the greatest job in the world to explore different places and people and actually get to write about it. What makes it even better is when people love reading it.
When I receive fan mail through email, my website, or on Goodreads, I’m extremely flattered and humbled that people take the time out of their lives to compliment my work. I appreciate all the love and support. Without it, I would be nothing. I really would.

Kelly Risser knew at a young age what she wanted to be when she grew up. Unfortunately, Fairytale Princess was not a lucrative career. Leaving the castle and wand behind, she entered the world of creative business writing where she worked in advertising, marketing, and training at various companies.
She’s often found lamenting, “It’s hard to write when there’s so many good books to read!” So, when she’s not immersed in the middle of someone else’s fantasy world, she’s busy creating one of her own. This world is introduced in her first novel, Never Forgotten.
Kelly lives in Wisconsin with her husband and two children. They share their home with Clyde the Whoodle and a school of fish.

N.L. Greene is a writer of YA and NA Contemporary and Paranormal Romances. She currently lives in Florida with her husband and two beautiful daughters. When she isn’t writing or reading, she enjoys traveling around the world with her family, shopping and doing other girly things with her girls, or playing video games with her husband. She is a lover of dogs, chocolate, and anything pink!

Randi Cooley Wilson was born and raised in Massachusetts where she attended Bridgewater State University and graduated with a degree in Communication Studies. After graduation she moved to California where she lived happily bathed in sunshine and warm weather for fifteen years. Randi now resides in Massachusetts with her husband and daughter.

Sharon Rose Mayes lives in Lufkin, Texas with her two sons. She chronicles her daily life at her personal blog Not Your Mom Blog and has been active in the blogosphere for seven years. When she is not chasing her kids and playing soccer mom she writes and dreams of all of the places she can’t wait to travel.

Susan Burdorf has loved fairy tales since she was old enough to read. The story of Sleeping Beauty, on which Affliction is based, is one of her favorites. Susan lives a quiet life in Nashville TN where she enjoys taking time to explore her second childhood with her grandchildren, with whom she continues to read fairy tales long after they have fallen asleep. She can often be found searching for fairy rings in her backyard.

Check out Cozie W. Harmon’s Debut Novel, Blood & Roses
Caught in a cycle of life, death and rebirth…
Cursed with immortality, Nicolei believes the vampire blood coursing through his veins means he will forever be alone. As he prowls through the countryside, draining peasants one after another, his hatred for his existence only grows. Until one night fate shows him a life of possibilities with a beauty that deserved more than a dingy tavern. Claiming Katarina was easy; taming her was more of a challenge. She would be the life or death of him with her mischief, but her bewitching ways would keep him chasing her for centuries.
Is it merely Déjà vu or fate that brings us together?
Rispa takes refuge in New Orleans during a desperate attempt to escape a treacherous life with her sadistic husband, Thorn. Drawn to the Big Easy by an unknown force, she prays the spirits said to haunt the city will protect her. Her senses come alive while walking the streets of the French Quarter, and an intriguingly familiar woman named Onyx enters her life. As their passions rise, whispered voices and memories of the past help unlock the secrets of their souls…
Immortal or mortal, can love truly last the ages?

CHAPTER SIX
Onyx woke as the sun’s bright rays pierced the room. Stumbling out of bed, she cursed under her breath for not closing the curtains the night before. With one hand over her eyes to shield them from the light, she made her way to the windows pulling the curtains closed. Welcoming the darkness again, she approached the bed to gaze at the lovely Rispa, still in peaceful slumber. The last twelve hours sent her life into a whirlwind. A woman she’d dreamt about walked into her life yesterday. It’d started out as a normal day. Today she felt like she was stumbling down a long black top road, not knowing what might jump out in front of her. Rispa’d started a chain reaction of events when she entered the shop yesterday. Okay, here was the damsel to rescue, now what? After hearing Rispa’s story, Onyx knew a battle was yet to come. Onyx was aware of their past lives together. She’d dreamt of this woman her entire life and knew Rispa was the one she’d been chasing for centuries, one lifetime after another. They would be born, find each other and end tragically at the hands of their enemy time and time again. I always have to rescue her. And here once again, it’s him. Do we have to do this every time?
Onyx returned to bed and snuggled beside the sleeping. Trying to fall asleep again, she realized she’d been waiting for Rispa by the water in her dream, but she never came. She wondered if she concentrated now, could she find Rispa in her reverie and take her back to the beginning where they first met all those centuries ago. Traveling back to that time might open Rispa’s eyes to the connection between them. When sleep overcame Onyx again she searched for Rispa through the dimensions of her dreams. She had a hunch as to where to find her. Rispa was still a lost soul adrift in this lifetime, so Onyx went to the one place she knew was a safe haven—the clearing in the woods.
Making her way through the trees Onyx saw Rispa sitting in the middle of the clearing, knees drawn to her chest. A dark shadow loomed over her, keeping her captive. She made her way toward Rispa as the shadow shrank back and disappeared. When they were in this dimension together, the smoky apparition was powerless.
Onyx moved like lightning to Rispa and placed a hand on her shoulder. She called Rispa by her first given name, “Katarina.”
Rispa looked over her shoulder to see Onyx standing behind her. She struggled to stand like she was trying to escape a puddle of molasses.
Facing one another, Onyx looked deep into Rispa’s soul through the windows of her eyes hoping for recognition.
When their eyes locked and their souls met, the trees around them and the ground beneath them faded away. The dimensions of the shared dream shifted as time unwound. The trees around them were replaced by buildings and the dirt beneath them turned into cobblestone streets.
The two found themselves in a dim alleyway. Onyx pushed Rispa against the crumbling exterior of a building. Rispa’s hands were pinned above her head, held tight in Onyx’s grip. Looking down, Rispa realized she was wearing a long burgundy velvet dress. As she wiggled beneath Onyx’s hold, she found it was hard to breathe. She felt the laces of the corset pressing into her back and how tight it cinched around her waist.
“Am I dreaming?” Rispa asked.
Onyx fed more of her weight to Rispa, putting her lips to her ear. “A dream you say?”
Rispa tried to move, but every time she did, Onyx pushed harder against her.
She felt Onyx’s breath in her ear again. It caused goose bumps to form on her arms. “Do you remember the very first time we met…Katarina?”
Struggling against Onyx’s vice-like grip, Rispa tried to free herself. It was no use. She was no match for Onyx’s strength. “What did you call me?”
“I called you Katarina. You must remember that name,” Onyx’s lips traced a kiss on her neck.
Rispa’s heart raced. Her pulse beat rampant. Warmth spread throughout her body causing her to feel her own blood coursing through every vein in her body. The mortar from the bricks pierced her skin through the soft fabric of her dress as Onyx ground her hips against her. Memories flooded Rispa’s mind. “Yes, I know who you are.”
Onyx repositioned Rispa’s wrists so she could hold them with one hand. She used her other to lift Rispa’s dress high enough to put her hand beneath it. Once her palm touched Rispa’s flesh, she moved it up, teasing.
Rispa moaned in pleasure. Onyx kissed the pulsating vein of Rispa’s neck and sucked the skin between her teeth.
Onyx’s mouth watered with anticipation, breathing in innocence and the metallic scent of blood. She moved her hand up Rispa’s thigh, pausing to press her thumb hard against the pulsating artery on the inside. She felt heat emanating from between Rispa’s legs. Tugging harder at the silky skin of her neck, Onyx suppressed the urge to rip her skin to shreds. Instead she quickened her rhythm, rocking her hips harder and faster against Rispa. As a scream escaped Rispa’s lips, Onyx slowed her pace, moving her hand upward to the moist folds of Rispa’s sex. She rubbed back and forth until Rispa was so drenched she could hear the slippery connection. With her thumb on Rispa’s clit, she pressed down hard, and slid her finger deep inside her channel. Onyx’s body responded as the crotch of her pants became soaked. Rispa clenched around Onyx’s fingers as they moved in perfect rhythm thrusting in and out. Their climaxes built as sweat beaded on their skin. It was a slow passionate heat rising from the core and spreading throughout every inch of their bodies. Energy glowed around the two, illuminating the darkness with bright blue light.

Yes I am charging $1.99 for that novella! (A breakdown of ebooks and why authors price the way we do)
I was supposed to have done this blog post a while ago, but we all know how great I am with keeping up on my blog. So, it didn’t get done.
Well, I really feel like I need to do a blog post on this topic because there are so many people who write short stories/novellas and get a ton of flack for charging more than 99 cents. I have even seen complaints about short stories that are free being “too short.”
So, anyway, I am going to break it down for y’all.
Of course, I am going to use myself as the example here, but remember there are tons of other authors out there who are in the same boat here.
A lot of what I write is called serial novels. These are also known as a short story series. The first of my series is only around 7000 words and its the first part in the series. Because I don’t like people to have to pay for something that short, I made it free all the time. Yup. Free… costs you nothing.
Each part after that gets a little longer as I grew into the story and each part after the first is also 99 cents. Parts 2 and 3 range in at 10 and 15000 words and then parts 5 and 6 are closer to 25,000 each. Your average novel is about 60,000 words. So000, one 25,000 word story is nearly half of a full novel and we are only asking 99 cents.
My compilation of the short story series is 73,000 words and priced at $4.99. That means the you pay just about the same for the compilation as you do if you buy the parts individually.
I believe this is fair as far as pricing goes.
Now, to talk about the pricing for a short story and all that goes into it.
-Your average author will spend anywhere from about forty to four hundred dollars for a cover. (sometimes more) -After that there is the editing. A short story will range you about a hundred bucks depending on legnth and editor used. Mine are usually between a hundred and one hundred fifty dollars.
- Then there is the formatting. Many authors know how to do this themselves, but some pay someone to do it.
- AND THEN there is the advertising. We have to advertise so that our books will get seen. This costs money and most authors whose books sell have to use advertising to sell them.
On top of all of these things, there is the fact that the time it took to write these stories is time we WORKED. Sorry that we didn’t go into a job and clock in like people with a day job. But, you know what, the time it took to write that was time away from my kids. It was time away from my husband. It was time my house didn’t get cleaned. It was time that I will never get back.
Now.
My most recent short stories/novellas are right around 30,ooo words. Yes, half a full novel. I have them priced at $1.99. I don’t see a problem with charging this for the amount of money and time that goes into bringing it into the world. Most places where they are sold give me about 80 cents as a royalty for that. So, see here. I have to sell 100 of those to make 80 bucks!
To pay most of my monthly bills I would have to sell nearly 1200 copies of a novella which is priced at $1.99 (and that is not including the rent) And those are just $1.99 ones, double that amount for the 99 cent ones.
I totally get that there are some books out there that are super short and people are charging an arm and a leg for. But, that is their choice. Most of us authors try to give you fair pricing as far as the length of the book goes. If you look up underneath the title of the book, most retailers will give you a page count or a word count so you have an idea of what you are getting. Also, my stories state clearly in the description that they are a short story series.
We are writers … authors. We love what we do, but we have to make a living too. I’m sorry if you have ever felt that you were wasting your dollar on any of my books. But, I put a lot of hard work into those stories and I think that they are fair prices.
Thank you for taking the time to read this ranty little post. I love all my fans, friends and fellow authors so much. I love writing these stories for you, but I can’t do it for nothing folks.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

A word to new authors about promotion (can apply to everyone though)
I am the worst ever at updating this blog. I am just not a good blogger I guess. Today I want to talk about promotion and getting your books noticed as well as yourself as an author.
I get quite a few people asking me for advice on how to promote their books. I take the time to give advice and try to help as best I can because I know what its like to be new and need some help getting out there. So, now, if I give you advice on how to promote and market and then I see you out there bitching about how your book isn’t selling but not once have I seen you do any of the things I suggested, then it peeves me off and makes me not want to help.
Now that that is out of the way, I am going to give a few of the most basic pointers that will help with promotion.
1. New authors, no one knows who you are and you have to work harder at getting yourself recognized. The best way to do this is to get out there and engage in conversations online. Like, comment, share, retweet, whatever it takes. You must get out there or no one will know who you are and they sure as hell wont know about your books.
2. You MUST self promote. Sorry folks, none of us like having to pimp ourselves out, but it has to be done because if you don’t, no one knows about your books and they wont sell. I know it feels weird and spammy to promo your own books. Just don’t BE spammy and it should be fine. Stick to the rules of engagement. Don’t friend someone and immediately ask them to promote you. Don’t send messages to people asking them to promote you and don’t send out mass emails to people asking them to promote you or advertising your book unless it is a newsletter that they have subscribed to.
3. Blog a lot. (I know, I know, I suck at this one) It’s proven that blogs bring in traffic. Blog often and find interesting stuff to talk about in your blog posts. (I am assuming that you have a website and blog. If you don’t then make that a priority.)
4. It takes money to make money. All right. Used to be that you could find all kinds of things to do to promote your book for free, but book marketing has changed a bit since I first published in 2010. You need to get some advertising. You can advertise SOME places for free still, but it’s pretty rare. The awesome thing is that if you look around, some of these places are very reasonably priced. Advertising your book means exposure, which means more people see it which means more people buy it. Sucks, but has to be done to sell books.
5. People are visual. If you don’t know how to make a simple graphic, I suggest you learn. People are visual creatures and are more likely to notice a picture. Make graphics with your books and small quotes. I’m sure you have seen them floating around Facebook and other social media networks. These work. I know, I know, I’ve heard it all, you aren’t good with graphics, you don’t have time, blah blah blah. Well folks, neither do I. I have five kids, a husband, a house, a business and then I have to write too. So suck it up and figure it out.
6. Write, write, write.
These are just a few of the things you can do to get started. My last word of advice is not to ask people to take time to do something for you and then bitch and moan about how your work isn’t selling. If you want to be an author who sells books you have to WORK at it. Rarely ever does success just fall into your lap. Most people work hard at achieving that and that means that they do a hell of a lot more than writing the books.
Thank you for your time. Good luck out there!

Society now knows of the vampires that roam the world. The creatures of the night no longer hide from humans. Instead, they are attacking on the streets, in plain view; either killing them or turning them into one of their own.
Six months have passed since Chloe and the other Hunters took down the vampire business tower, The Talon Building. Dahlia, a beautiful yet wicked vampire, warned Chloe that by destroying their business she had started the vampire apocalypse, and that each and every vampire turned would be on Chloe’s conscience … and she wasn’t kidding. The vampire apocalypse was upon them.
The group dynamic has changed in the six months that have passed. Chloe has hardened, becoming a heartless vampire killer. The young Hunters are forced into a new home, with the barrier still up around Arcadia Falls and Chloe unable to cross it. Worst of all, the community of Arcadia Falls has shunned Chloe, knowing that she was the cause of the first vampire outbreak in history to go public, allowing every single human being on earth to learn about vampires.
The group may be young, but they are powerful and smart. However, are they powerful and smart enough to save the world from being taken over by the one thing they were made to kill?
