Me, my books and Kindle Unlimited

I held out for quite a while before I took my books off of all other retailers except Amazon and enrolled them into Kindle Select. I was hoping that Kindle Unlimited wouldn’t have a huge impact on my sales.

Well … it did.

Six months later, I am taking them back out. When my term is up I am going to put them back up at ibooks, Nook and other retailers. I didn’t have a terrible experience, but having to remain exclusive to Amazon is not worth it for me.

Kindle Unlimited is changing, they are now going to pay the author on the amount of pages read instead of per unit. I get why they are doing it, but I don’t see it working for me and my books. The ebook industry is ever changing and I understand their business sense on this matter, but want to go back to having my books on all retailers. This change is going to be really, really good for some authors though.

So, in the long run, mid august you will see my books back up all over the place. I am going to have a HUGE sale next month as one last hurrah to take advantage of the Kindle countdown deals before I pull them from select. That is going to be something to look forward to.

Thank you, everyone, for all of your support and reading my books! I couldn’t do this without you!

Mouth as told by bassist Paul DeLisle. Well known for their hits “All Star,” “Walking

on the Sun,” “Then the Morning Comes,” “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby,” and “I’m

a Believer,” the band carried the spirit of a generation, but didn’t stop

there. Enjoy this behind-the-scenes look from Paul’s unique, there from the

When a Writer Can’t Write

When a writer can’t write, this is a very bad thing. Well, at least I know it is for me. I admit I’m a pretty moody and emotional person anyway, but when I can’t write, it’s ten times worse than usual.

Writing is a part of me and when I can’t do it, I feel like I’m losing a little bit of myself each day that passes without a word going onto the page.

The fact remains though, that life is life and I am a mother of five children, a wife who spoils her hubby and a woman who works a day job. Not to mention the property chores and house chores that need doing every day. So, writing, though it is my main source of income, tends to come last.

It hurts that it comes last. It hurts that I can’t sit down and spend hours at a time working on one of my stories. I could neglect the chores or the garden or the yard, but then I would feel guilty for not doing those things.

It is an endless battle, the artists struggle.

I write when I can, but sometimes I find myself falling asleep at the keyboard because I’m so exhausted. This whole fight to write makes me even crazier than I already am. There is not enough time for all of this.

I have mentioned all of this before and get a variety of comments about it. Some of which are, enjoy your children, they are only young once.

Yes, I know this, and I do enjoy them. I spend every day, all day with my kids. Except when they are at school. However, it would be nice if I was able to write more, to make more money, so that we can do things we enjoy. I would feel better when I spent time with them if I got some words on the page and had accomplished something.

Another comment is, You can just write in your spare time.

Yeah, I could write in my spare time. I DO write in my spare time. That is the only time I have to write.

For me, writing is a job, not a hobby. However, even if it was a hobby I would still feel this way if I couldn’t write. So … the question remains, how do we divide our time? How do we place a priority on all the important things in our life?

Some say make a schedule, but when you have crazy work schedules and children with crazy schedules, you learn to fly by the seat of your pants. So, that is how it shall continue until things calm down.

We have to keep on keepin on and hope that it all works out in the end. Finding time to write will probably always be a struggle for me and I accept that. In a couple years the kids will all be in school and perhaps then, I can have a real writing schedule. Until then, I cherish the little bits of time I can get in each day.

One last thing … I have to tell myself this last part all the time because we work so hard that it is easy to forget. Don’t ever forget rule #32 … Enjoy the little things!

Jenn cooks … sometimes. Roasted Garlic Shrimp with Spinach Artichoke Pasta.

Most people who know me know that I really don’t like to cook. It’s not the actual cooking part of the process I don’t like, it’s the clean-up. Also the fact that most of the time, no matter how much love I put into the meal, it ends up tasting like crap. I’m just not good at it. Then, the family is all “uh, this was … good.” But, they don’t really mean it.

In the end, I’m wife and mother, so I have to cook … every. single. day.

Every. Single. Day.

Yeah, I had to say that twice.

So, one of the dishes I’ve made recently is a great looking meal I found at Real House Moms. This website always has some easy to make, but tasty recipes. You can find the website and recipe here. http://www.realhousemoms.com/garlic-roasted-shrimp-spinach-artichoke-pasta/

The first thing I did was add the ingredients to my shopping list. Actually, I made a meal plan for the week, then made a list for the whole week, but that’s another blog post. After I had everything I needed to make the pasta, I set up my laptop in the kitchen and got to work.

I followed her instructions to the T and it turned out fabulous, except it didn’t look anything like the picture of hers.

The second time I made it. I used small bow tie pastas instead of big ones. That helped my kids to eat it.

It was a hit, my husband liked it and he isn’t really a pasta kind of guy, so that was something. My kids ate it, which pleased me. This is not a very time consuming meal and I’m sure to do it every now and then.

Beary Tales ebooklg

Once upon a time, something wicked was woven. A magic formed by darkness and pain, a magic that only the victim of a broken heart could have created.

The death of her one true love has forced Goldalynn to use dark magic. Determined to bring him back she discovers she must acquire the pelts of three bears under the light of the blue moon to fulfill the spell.

The blue moon has risen and the three bears are caged, awaiting the fate of Goldalynn’s deadly spell. But, a collision of spells, magic dark and light create a curse, a curse that turns the bears fur into soft skin and their paws into delicate arms and legs… a curse that turns them human. Now these bears in human bodies must travel across the magical realms of the modern world searching for a way to break the curse.

This dark fairy tale is not the book your mother read you when tucking you in at night, you won’t find a fairy tale princess who needs a rescue, but there might be a prince or three in this world. Find out as Beary Tales takes you on a magically twisted adventure.

Walking The Line: A Bit on Depression

This post is probably going to get a little personal. No, that’s not true, it’s going to get very personal and as a rule, aside from posting pictures and things like that, I try to keep my personal life canstockphoto9019525on the down low.

Ok. Here goes…

Like many others out there, I have fought depression since I was a teenager, maybe even before that. I don’t take anything for it, I never have and probably never will. I fight this demon with the strength I have inside, daylight, fresh air, exercise and all kinds of other little tactics that are supposed to make you feel better.

I’m not posting this to bring attention to this matter, but to bring attention to those who believe that depression isn’t real. That people can hit such an all time low that they truly feel there is absolutely nothing to live for.

I have five children who I would do anything for. Every time they leave the house or I leave the house without them, I worry so much about them. I want to be here with them forever. I have a great job even though we still struggle, I have a wonderful husband and a home of our own. But … I still have those days.

The bad days … when the darkness takes over and I can’t rise above it. These times are now far and few between, but they do happen.

Here is the thing. When someone you love feels they could die and you wouldn’t care. You don’t shrug and say “I don’t know”  or dismiss it in anyway whatsoever. You stand up, you take your friend or husband or wife or child into your arms and tell them. “I  LOVE YOU” Tell them you can’t live without them, tell them whatever it takes to LIFT the veil of darkness from over them and bath them in the light of love.

I don’t care if its a lie. The depression will end and they will come back stronger from it, they will realize that they do have so much compared to what some people have and they will be grateful for it. But first, the darkness of depression must be lifted.

Depression is real.

I feel that medications are not for me, but that’s just me. I have found ways to fight it on my own, but like I said, the bad days still happen. It probably doesn’t help that I’m a writer and whatever my characters are feeling, that is what I feel too, so I can be almost bi-polar at times. For a writer, emotions are a serious business.

If you love someone who suffers from depression, please, make sure you are helping them and not feeding the darkness. I know there are a lot of people out there who grow weary in dealing with their depressed loved one, having to ease them out of the dark hole every time their bad days happen. My opinion, if you can’t love them for everything they are … depression and all, then you don’t really love them and it’s time to fix it. Intuition will tell your loved one that you don’t really care and you will only make them worse in the long run.

I truly hope that opening up a little bit like this helps someone who needs it. But … I also want to say, as a last bit. For those, like me, who suffer from depression, you have to fight it. Don’t leave yourself open to the darkness. Look up natural ways to make yourself feel better. Seriously, even clean sheets and sparkling counter tops can make a difference in how you feel.

I Don’t Make Resolutions

canstockphoto11936299

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone of you had a wonderful holiday! Our Christmas and New Year was pretty good. Not as awesome as some past years, but not terrible either. Even though I am working outside the home now I managed to get Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years, off to spend with my family.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to host our big family gathering that we have every year, nor were we able to attend any holiday gatherings. It’s sad, but I’m thankful I at least got to be home with my kids.

2014 was a rough year, there have been a lot of ups and downs and sometimes I didn’t know when the roller coaster was going to stop. It still hasn’t. Lol. There were a couple huge life events that occurred in the past year are that we finally purchased our own home and a beautiful property with four and a half acres for my children to roam. It’s been a long time coming, but we finally did it.

My oldest daughter, just got married in December. She and her husband are expecting a baby girl in May. Yup, my first grandbaby. That is so weird to say, since I’m only 35. I’m excited though, I can’t wait to shop for little girl stuff. My last three babies were boys and I miss the cute girly stuff.

Additionally, My son in law is joining the Navy and they will be moving away after the baby is born. I hope they get some where close so we can visit them, if they don’t, I hope its warm and coastal so I can visit in the winter. :) Luckily, since we are a military family, my daughter wont have too much trouble adjusting to military life.

I have taken a job outside the home for a while. More money to pay the bills never hurts. Ever since Amazon unrolled Kindle Unlimited my sales sorta tanked. Even though I’m working, I am still trying to release something for you about every three months. Next up for release is the second book in the Graveyard Guardians series, Keeper of the Peace.

The book world is driven by the consumer, the readers, so sales are bound to go up and down. I will never quit writing. I say this because while I am at my day job, I see people who have been at the company for over ten years and make about as much as I do. With my writing, at least the chance of someday making it big is out there and just having that chance, no matter how miniscule it may be, is enough for me.

Also, I would write regardless of if I got paid for it. I am lucky to be able to do something I love and earn an income for it. I have been writing since I was in grade school and will be writing till the day I die. That’s just how it is.

I don’t have any huge resolutions, as I don’t really make them. I always set small goals for myself and usually achieve them. It’s strange, I am not a patient person by nature, but I when it comes to my goals I set realistic ones and eventually they happen. It’s like the turtle, slow and steady wins the race.

Oh, another small tidbit about my year. I’ve lost about twenty pounds. I haven’t been making a big deal out of it publicly, but another seven pounds down and I will finally reach a weight I haven’t seen in four years. I still have at least thirty to go until I hit where I would like to be, but for now I feel so much better, and healthier than I have in years. :)

Well, I guess that’s pretty much the update for how my year has gone. I am looking forward to 2015 and hoping that it’s even better than 2014.

When her father died, Lucy Mae Estmond inherited the family business. She has known all of her life that she would be in line to watch over the souls of the recently passed, keeping them safe from the Reapers.

The soul eating Reapers have been a plague upon the Earth, stealing souls and leaving the Keepers as the only thing that stands between Heaven and Hell. The factions despise each other and have warred for generations.

Then Lucy discovers an ancient legend predicting the arrival of the Chosen One, destined to bring forth an end to the Reapers. The surprises continue when she realizes she is that person. For Lucy, being the Chosen One doesn’t change much. Fighting Reapers is just another day in the life of a Keeper.

When she meets Jack Walker, they both realize they have an insane, mutual attraction. Too bad that he’s been sent to prevent the prophecy from coming true. His only mission: to kill the Chosen One.

The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter Series – A short story series, each one gets longer as you go. Part one is super short, but always free at all retailers, not just Amazon.
