One last Maui posey

Another flower from Maui

I wanted to post a photo I took in Switzerland of edelweiss, but it was just a bit out of focus.  So I'm christening this "Maui edelweiss," since I don't recall its true genus and species.

Fireworks!

Another Maui Flower

Well, not really fireworks — just kinda sorta looks like it.  I wish I knew the name of this blossoming beauty, but alas, I've slept since then.  This is my second offering of Maui flower photos from our 2006 trip to the islands.

Now we're getting crabby

Crab claw flower

As long as we're exploring Maui, we should examine the flora.  This flower certainly does look like crab claws, doesn't it?  And thus the name.  My understanding is that most of the flowers that are today found in Hawaii were imported from somewhere else, but they appear to do well there, nonetheless.

The dangers of falling coconuts

Hula show at Old Lahaina Luau on Maui, September, 2006

Millions of people are killed and maimed every day by falling coconuts.  I think.  Or was it millions of people eat coconuts every day — I can't remember.  Maybe it was one person has been known to have been killed by a falling coconut.

In any case, these coconuts look pretty dangerous.  If you get a chance to go to Maui, be sure to take in the luau and show at Old Lahaina.  I took this photo back in September of 2006.  We may not be able to escape this summer's heat, but at least we can imagine we're in the tropics.

Check out ths link http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2405/are-150-people-killed-each-year-by-falling-coconuts about Internet rumors of people being killed by falling coconuts.

These birds really know cool, dig?

Shore birds at Marco Island, Florida

These birds seem to have found a good way to stay cool.  I, too, would like to be wading in the surf at Marco Island, Florida, where I took this photo, back in October of 2007.

I liked this photo so much I had it made into greeting cards.

Now, that would be a relief!

Edmond Hafer Park, November 2005

It's really hot out today, so I'm sharing a cool fall scene I snapped in Hafer Park, Edmond, Oklahoma, in the fall of 2005.

Don't you just wish the Time Pullers could translocate you there?

Cool dude hanging loose on the beach

Giant green sea turtle

One last entry in this sequence of sea animals: A reptile this time.  We found this green sea turtle on one of the beaches on the north side of Oahu, Hawaii. These things are HUGE.

The "turtle guards" were close behind, ready to throw a perimeter rope around the creature in order to set the approach limits for the curious.  Come any closer than that, and one risks being accused of molesting the turtle.  I think the punishment is banishment to a Gulag labor camp, or some such thing.

I'm bigger! No, I'm bigger!

California Sea Lions at La Jolla

I seem to have a sea-mammal theme going here, don't I?  I took this photo of California Sea Lions having a stand off at the "Children's Pool" in La Jolla, a coastal suburb of San Diego, in October of 2010.

The photo may appear stretched in the vertical direction in this post, so to see the original proportions, click the photo and it should redisplay in your browser.

A Whale of a Tale

Gray Whale, Monterey Bay, California

Or, rather, a tail of a whale.  I snapped this from a whale watch vessel in February, 2008, off Monterey California.  I had only a light jacket and no gloves, and the boat heaved on twelve-to-fifteen-foot swells.  I was turning into a block of salty ice!

Thar she blows!  Where away?  Two points abaft the lee beam!  She blows, she blows, she blows!

A Man's Home …

Pool at Hearst Castle, February, 2008

I'll get back to posting text when … when … well, when I get back to it.  For now, I'm going to continue to share some of my best trip photos.
