Three Nosy Crow titles longlisted for the 2019 UKLA Book Awards!

The longlists for the 2019 UKLA Book Awards have been announced today – and we’re absolutely thrilled that three Nosy Crow books have been recognised!

Now in their 11th year, the UKLA Book Awards are the only awards judged by active classroom teachers – it’s a great honour to be longlisted.

Stardust, written by Jeanne Willis and illustrated by Briony May Smith, and This Zoo is Not for You, written and illustrated by Ross Collins, have both been shortlisted in the 3-6 category.

A wonderfully moving tale about the importance of being true to yourself, with magical illustrations, Stardust is a perfect bedtime picture book. Here’s a look inside:

A rollicking rhyming picture book, from the award-winning creator of There’s a Bear on My Chair, This Zoo is Not for You combines comic misunderstandings with a heartfelt story about acceptance and belonging. Here’s a look inside:

And Running on Empty, by S.E. Durrant, has been longlisted in the 7-11 category! A beautifully told story of unorthodox families, grief, adolescence and running, The Sunday Times called Running on Empty “lyrical, moving and realistic”. Here’s a look inside:

You can find out more about the UKLA awards, and read the full longlists, here. The shortlists for the awards will be announced in April next year, and the overall winners will be announced in July at the 2019 UKLA International Conference.

Congratulations Jeanne, Briony, Ross, and Sue!

Take a look inside Murder at Twilight by Fleur Hitchcock

This October we’re incredibly pleased to be publishing Murder at Twilight by Fleur Hitchcock – a gripping thriller, perfect for pre-teens, that will have young readers hooked, from the author of the highly-acclaimed Murder in Midwinter.

And today you can take a very first look inside the book – we’re sharing an exclusive preview of Murder at Twilight.

When Viv has a fight with Noah, she doesn’t think it’ll be the last time she sees him. But when she gets back from school, he’s nowhere to be found and there are police cars everywhere, lights flashing and sirens blaring.

Viv is sure Noah’s run away to get attention. But it’s really cold, and getting dark, and the rain just won’t stop falling. So she sets off to look for him, furious at his selfishness, as the floodwaters rise. And then she finds him, and realises that a much more dangerous story is unfolding around them…

Here’s a look inside the book:

Nosy Crow snaps up light-fingered MG debut from Nizrana Farook

Nosy Crow is delighted to announce the acquisition of two books from Nizrana Farook, graduate of the Bath Spa MA Writing for Young People, 2017. The first of these, The Girl Who Stole An Elephant, will be published in January 2020.

Kirsty Stansfield bought world rights from Joanna Moult at the Skylark Literary Agency.

The Girl Who Stole An Elephant is a fast-paced adventure story for 9+ readers. Chaya, a no-nonsense, outspoken hero, leads her friends and a gorgeous elephant on a noisy, fraught, joyous adventure through the jungle where revolution foments and leeches lurk. Will stealing the queen’s jewels be the beginning or the end of everything for the intrepid gang?

Nizrana Farook was born and raised in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the beautiful landscapes of her home country form the backdrop to all her stories. She lives in Hertfordshire with her husband and two daughters.

Kirsty Stansfield, head of fiction at Nosy Crow, comments: “Never has being a jewel thief seemed so appealing. Chaya’s voice is brilliantly endearing – she’s stroppy and lovely, and excellent at causing calamity just by trying to do the right thing. We’re so pleased to welcome Nizrana and her creation to the list!”

Nizrana Farook comments: “For months, while the frost glittered and the air was chilly outside I sat and plugged away at a tropical world of action and colour inside my head, creating The Girl Who Stole An Elephant. I couldn’t be happier to trust Nosy Crow with the next part of its journey as they introduce it to the world.”

Joanna Moult, agent, comments: “The Girl Who Stole An Elephant spirited me away into the adventure from the first page. Nizrana has that magical ability to race you through the story via the most beautiful of settings – I was utterly captivated. I’m delighted that Nosy Crow are just as enchanted as I can’t think of a better publisher for this book!”

Three Nosy Crow books on the North Somerset Teachers’ Book Awards shortlists!

The shortlists for the 2018 North Somerset Teachers’ Book Awards have been announced, and we’re delighted to see three Nosy Crow books recognised across the different categories of the awards!

A part of the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, and founded by the ‘Just About Books’ teachers’ book group, the North Somerset Teachers’ Book Award was born out of a desire to celebrate the very best in children’s literature.

You Can’t Make Me Go To Witch School!, written by Em Lynas and illustrated by Jamie Littler, is shortlisted in the Read Aloud category – books which lend themselves to being shared with an audience, whether big or small. Here’s a look inside the book:

And Ella on the Outside, by Cath Howe, and Running On Empty, by S.E. Durrant, are both shortlisted in the Moving On category – aimed at children who feel the need for a more challenging read, but are (perhaps) not ready for older teen/ YA fiction, and supporting them to find a satisfying read appropriate to this stage.

A Chase in Time is The Times’ Children’s Book of the Week

This Summer we published A Chase in Time: the first book in a brilliant new time-slip adventure series for 7+ readers, written by Sally Nicholls, winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, and with artwork by Brett Helquist, illustrator of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.

And over the weekend, The Times named A Chase in Time as their Children’s Book of the Week!

Alex O’Connell writes:

“The author of Things a Bright Girl Can Do — an excellent young-adult novel about suffragettes — returns with the first in a new series for younger readers … It’s perfect for those who aren’t quite ready for time-travel classics such as Tom’s Midnight Garden, Charlotte Sometimes and, er, Back to the Future, but who might be thrilled by the idea of two contemporary children explaining what a mobile phone is to Edwardian children in knickerbockers … Nicholls is a great storyteller and this is a clever vehicle for introducing the differences between then and now in an accessible way, with a fast-paced plot and a lovely spooky ending … My clock’s ticking for the next in the series.”
