Keith Richards kills orchids, and more
Some of you may know that orchids feature prominently in the Fury books. That's why I giggled when I stumbled across this news story from December 2010. Keith Richards better watch out if he doesn't want the Furies to come after him! Sometimes sorry isn't enough, Keith Richards. Or...is this the strategy Em should take in trying to get the Furies off her back? Hmmm...I smell a Book Two plot twist!
Also, this is hilarious, and kind of how I feel some days:
Lastly, check out What Your American...

Scary weekend
Things I did this weekend that could qualify as frightening:
1) Ate at least six different types of cheese.
2) Watched Poltergeist II: The Other Side. The man who played Kane (the "preacher"), Julian Beck, was unacceptable. Like, I could not look at him. (Turns out, though, he was a major figure in avant-garde theater during the 1960s and 70s. So there's that.)
3) Read Norman Partridge's Dark Harvest, a tremendous little book that I found gripping, thrilling, and evocative. It tells the story of...

Oh, the horror
This post has nothing to do with Fury or YA lit. It has to do with food, and pizza (my other favorite things in the world).
Okay, so, a little background: I am lucky enough to live with two cats and a wonderful man, who I will refer to from here on out as The Carpenter (not a Jesus reference! he really builds things!). The Carpenter recently started reading Tim Ferriss' The 4-Hour Body, a book that outlines strategies for "hacking the human body" from this self-declared "human guinea pig." Am...

I think they mean "Fury" hair
Reasons that my male editor sent me this link:
1) I cite "Part of Your World" as one of my top-five favorite songs.
2) When asked how long I will continue to grow my (once pixie-length) hair, I respond: "Until it looks like a mermaid's!"
3) I once sang in a concert with Sean Palmer, who had recently played Prince Eric in the Broadway production of "The Little Mermaid." I was dying to a) introduce myself as Ariel; and/or b) kind of "land-swim" by him and then ask coyly: "Do I remind you of anyone...

What to wear??
Hey everyone!
I've been so busy manning my Facebook and Twitter (@MilesBooks) feeds, and reveling in the excitement generated Fury's beautiful cover (revealed a few weeks ago over at La Femme Readers), that I haven't been blogging. Now I have a big Post-it on my mirror at home and on my computer desktop (these virtual sticky-note thingys are pretty cool): BLOG! it reads. Subtle? No. Effective? I hope so!
Anyway, on top of the cover reveal and the ARC that is in my possession (see below), some o...

Hooray!
There's a good excuse for my long absence from this forum, and I'm sure it won't shock anyone. I've been toiling away at the rough draft of FURY. And this morning, I FINISHED IT!!!!!! Phew. It's been challenging, fun, exhausting, and exciting, usually all at the same time. Sometimes I found myself "word-vomming" (as one editor aptly put it) -- just getting something, anything onto the page, safe in the knowledge that I can go back and fix it later. Getting the skeleton out there is the hardes...

Meet, well, me
Lauren asked me some questions and I answered them! She also posted some totally adorable pictures of us. I have to dig up some older ones. They will blow everyone's minds.
She and I used to share a journal in high school. Basically it was a notebook that we would pass back and forth, writing to each other about our lives and boys and how nervous we were about applying to college. We'd write song lyrics in the margins. I have Liz Phair's "Perfect World" running in my head on loop, now.

Great words
Found this quotation through the Bookslut blog, another one of my almost-daily Internet stops.
They're Annie Ernaux's words, from an essay about her on The Second Pass:
"Maybe the true purpose of my life is for my body, my sensations and my thoughts to become writing, in other words, something intelligible and universal, causing my existence to merge into the lives and heads of other people."
I love finding quotes about writing that resonate with me, inspire me, and validate my own creative choi...
