New Doctor Who Star Peter Capaldi Hits Radio Times Cover

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

In this week’s Radio Times, Steven Moffat recalls writing The Day of the Doctor, revealing it was the most “difficult” and “terrifying” thing he has ever written and reveals why he chose Peter Capaldi to be the new Doctor.

Writer and executive producer Steven Moffat reveals:

When you choose a Doctor, you want somebody who is utterly compelling, attractive in a very odd way. None of the Doctors are conventionally attractive, but they’re all arresting. Handsome men don’t quite suit. Matt Smith’s a young, good-looking bloke from one angle but is actually the strangest looking man from another. You need that oddity; you need somebody who is carved out of solid star, really. Doctor Who is a whopping great star vehicle, despite the fact it changes star every so often.

Panic Moon May 2014 Out Now!

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Hmm? What’s that, my child? The first 2014 issue of the fanzine, Panic Moon, is out now, you say? Yes, yes, quite so!

Dated this month, the A6 ‘pocket-sized’ fanzine largely focuses on William Hartnell’s brilliant First Doctor:

It’s a real mixed bag this time, but has an unintended – but nevertheless welcome – slight First Doctor bias, with articles about An Unearthly Child, Marco Polo, The Time Meddler and The Savages.

We also look at The Time of the Doctor, Doomsday and The Girl Who WaitedDoctor Who in Germany, missing episode animations and space opera in Doctor Who. As if that weren’t enough, we speculate on a connection between The Daemons and Ghost Light, and write in praise of Carmen Munroe, Michael Grade, the Raston Warrior Robot, Tanya Lernov, the TARDIS doors and moments from Planet of Giants and The Enemy of the World.

At just £1.50 including p+p, it’s a steal; and for thos- – hang on, in praise of Michael Grade?!

Uhm, sorry, I mean – for those outside the UK, it’s just £3.00!

Set up in 2010 and named after the supposed TV show Karen Gillan auditioned as Amy for, you can find out more over at their blog. So grab your radiation gloves and get the May 2014 issue now!

Fourth Doctor Cosplayer Ziplines for Charity!

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

A courageous cosplayer has dressed as the Fourth Doctor – and jumped off the Tyne Bridge, Newcastle! But don’t worry; it’s all for charity.

Andrew Younger donned the get-up and zip-lined from the 59m bridge for the charity, One Tiny Life, which helps to care for over 700 premature and sick newborn babies and their families each year. As he jumped, he managed to fight the fear and yell, “Would you like a jelly baby?”

He completed the look with – what else? – the Fourth Doctor scarf, donated by official licensee, Lovarzi. It looked like it might have to be taken off, however; Andrew told Crave:

“Everyone seemed to think it would look better without the jacket and at first I thought I was going to have to lose the scarf as well. Luckily the health and safety guy agreed that it just wouldn’t be Doctor Who without it and we managed to secure the scarf within the harness. I think he was a fan.”

Well, who isn’t a fan these days?!

He managed to raise 76% of his £500 target, but it’s only the first stage of his charity challenge. He will also be completing in the Baltic Slide in July, and the Great North Run!

So please give generously! You can donate over at JustGiving or simply text TWHO74 followed by either £2, £5 or £10 to 70070. Oh, and if you’re eyeing up that Fourth Doctor scarf, you can get one from Lovarzi.

Hermione Norris Cast As Doctor Who Returns To Lanzarote

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

The BBC has announced the Hermione Norris has been cast in an episode of Doctor Who Series 8 opposite new incarnation Peter Capaldi.

Norris – currently starring in The Crimson Field on BBC One – has previously appeared in comedy-drama Cold Feet, BAFTA award-winning spy drama Spooks and ITV’s Wire in the Blood.

Of her casting, the actress enthused:

It’s exciting to be part of such an iconic show, and one that my kids can watch!!!

As exciting as this casting is, however, perhaps the bigger news is the trip overseas. Following a successful trip to Spain for Doctor Who Series 7a, the team are this time heading to Lanzarote for some location shooting, the island which was also a main feature of the 1984 serial Planet of Fire, Peter Davison’s penultimate story.

Says Steven Moffat, lead writer and Executive Producer

It’s a testament to the quality of Peter Harness’s intense and emotional script, that we’ve been able to attract an actress of the brilliance of Hermione Norris. And for the first time since 1984, the Doctor Who production team is heading to Lanzarote. The Doctor is returning to the scene of an old adventure – but there have been sinister changes since his last visit.

The episode is written by Peter Harness (Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, Wallander), produced by Peter Bennett and directed by Paul Wilmshurst (Strike Back, Combat Kids). The episode also stars Ellis George, Tony Osoba (who classic fans will know from 1979′s Destiny of the Daleks and 1987′s Dragonfire) and Phil Nice.

With Ben Miller, Tom Riley, Keeley Hawes and alleged sightings of Richard Armitage, Doctor Who Series 8 is certainly shaping up to be one of the most well-cast yet!

Haven’t Caught Dark Eyes 2 Yet? Time To See What You’ve Been Missing…

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Given the successful teaming of Paul McGann and Ruth Bradley for the 2012 mini series Dark Eyes, it was somewhat inevitable that the World War One nurse would return to the world of Doctor Who.

This happened earlier this year in Dark Eyes 2, released in February. If you’re not up to speed on this, it’s time to enjoy the trailer above and read the following synopsis

When the Doctor defeated the Dalek Time Controller and its Time Lord ally, the timelines shifted and events changed… but the danger is far from over. And new threats to the continued safety of the universe are emerging.

Molly O’Sullivan carried on with her life as a nursing assistant in World War One. She probably thought she would never see the Doctor in his ‘Tardy-box’ again…

From the Dalek occupied planet Nixyce VII through Earth’s history and to the very edge of the universe, the Doctor’s footprints across eternity are being tracked by foes old and new. But when did it all begin and when will it end? Living his life through the complexities of time travel, the Doctor can never be quite sure if he’s experiencing his life in the most helpful order.

The only certainty appears to be the advance of the powers of evil and the oncoming threat of a fight to the death against forces that would destroy everything the Doctor holds dear.

So, what are you waiting for?

Ian Levine Makes Omnirumour Black Hole Personal

Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

For the longest while, we’ve been living in the land of the Doctor Who Lost Episodes Omnirumor. It seems like every week or so, another one crops up detailing the “potential” discovery of one of our lost treasures. Usually, it leads to nothing more than a few press releases stating that there is nothing new to report at this time. Occasionally, it brings us the return of stories like The Web of Fear and The Enemy of the World.

At the very center of those rumors is Philip Morris, executive director of Television International Enterprises and Archives Ltd (TIEA). The other name that creeps up frequently is Ian Levine who has assisted in the return of some of these lost episodes as well. According to Levine, Morris may very well be holding out on us Whovians and the world.

In a lengthy note on Facebook, Ian Levine calls out Philip Morris with several damning allegations. First, he begins by recounting the beginnings of the drive to recover the missing episodes:

“In 2005 Philip Morris started a thread on the Missing Episodes forum, titled “Ian Levine” in which he suggested searching for Doctor Who in Africa. He was derided and mocked but I alone stood up for him and arranged to meet him. I asked Paul Vanezis to get an offical [sic] BBC letter asking to whom it may concern to allow Philip Morris access to archives in Africa and anywhere else.

At this point Phil had never met Paul Vanezis. Phil subsequently discovered all these missing episodes had been distributed by Television Internation Enterprises, so formed a new company with the same name.”

He then goes on to lay some heavy allegations at Morris’ feet:

“Yes indeed, it has obviously yielded huge massive results, but what earthly use are these results if he hoards them, locked away for no-one to see or enjoy or benefit from. I applaud what he did, and the initiative to go out and do it, but I revile what he has done since. They should have all been given back the minute he found them, and by now they would all have been out on DVD.”

The rest of his post continues to blast Morris (and it can be read in its entirety here). The biggest takeaway from Levine is the allegation that Morris has not only found more missing footage, but that he is holding on to it for a yet unknown answer (writer’s note: if true, probably money). This leaves us with two possibilities: 1) Levine’s allegations are true and Morris may incur the wrath of Whovians worldwide or 2) Levine, for unknown motives, is making false allegations against someone who has worked incredibly hard to bring us these highly sought after classics.

Neither scenario is good for business and has the potential to become very ugly before the entirety of the truth is revealed.

So dear readers, what is your take on the situation? Is Morris holding out on us? Or is Levine stirring up trouble for unknown reasons? Let us know!

Karen Gillan’s US Sitcom ‘Selfie’ Gets Go Ahead

Danny_Weasel is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Things just seem to be going from strength to strength for former Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan, whose pilot for the sitcom Selfie has been picked up by ABC for a full series!

Following news that her horror film Oculus is a hit, both with reviewers and audiences, and that she is set to be a prominent villain in Marvel’s summer blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, even her hair is forging a career for itself (if rumours are to be believed) as her shorn locks are alleged to be appearing as a wig in the new Star Wars film.

Selfie also stars John Cho of Star Trek and Harold and Kumar fame and fellow Doctor Who alumni David Harewood (Joshua Naismith in David Tennant’s farewell two parter The End of Time) is a modern reimagining of My Fair Lady as a sitcom.

Now before you all run screaming for torches and pitchforks crying blasphemy it sounds as if they have changed it up enough to stand on its own, with Eliza (Gillan) hiring Henry (Cho) as a marketing expert to improve her public image after a public breakup goes viral for all the wrong reasons.

Do you think the show has potential? If it gets a UK screening will you be watching?  Just how much higher can Karen Gillan’s star rise?

Raise your voices and tell us things below.
