Revised Fifty Years In Time And Space – And Get A Signed Copy!
Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
About a year ago, we featured a lovely book here on Kasterborous called Fifty Years In Time And Space: A Short History Of Doctor Who. (Here, in fact.)
Ah, a year ago.
Little did we know that soon we’d be hearing that the beloved Eleventh Doctor, that very old man with the hearts of a child, would soon be ending his journeys in the TARDIS. While the return of Doctor Who brought many new fans to the show, somehow the charm of a gawky, lanky young man named Matt Smith would bring many more new fans to the series from across the globe.
But now that we are about to embark on the adventures of the Twelfth Doctor, St. Mark’s Press has released a revised and updated version of Fifty Years In Time And Space to include Smith’s era and a look to the future of the show with Peter Capaldi at the front.
The revised edition features an new cover, drawn by Roger Langridge, a DWM illustrator, with William Hartnell and Peter Capaldi giving each other one-eyed prickly looks.
If you’ve not had the pleasure of reading the original, author Frank Danes sums it up as -
This book aims to be a guide to fifty years of the series for those who like Doctor Who and want to learn more about it. It aims to be of interest to readers who enjoy the post 2005 revival and want to know more about the original series. I also hope it will be of interest to the die hard, knowledgeable fans who, perhaps lifelong fans like me, devour anything about Doctor Who that they can get their hands on. It is inevitably a personal reading of the series and is coloured by my own critical preferences…I was born in 1965 – on a Saturday, in fact, and just in time to watch ‘Galaxy Four’ episode two.
The Southland Times in New Zealand even had this to say about Fifty Years In Time And Space:
If there was such a thing as a time traveler’s check list, Frank Danes would tick every box with his Short History of Doctor Who. He knows what is good, what is bad and what is ugly and he’s not afraid to talk about these things. Danes’ book is… for anyone who wants to understand its history, whether they have been with the show since Hartnell or joined it at any point in its half century.
And here’s the best part – the publisher has offered you, dear Kasterborous reader, a great deal! The regular price for the book is £11.95, but if you mention that you saw this write-up here on Kasterborous to them, they will send you a SIGNED copy for only £8.25 including postage! They’ve even said for those non-UK residents a price of £15 including postage will be available.
If you’d like to take St. Mark’s up on this offer, email info@stmarkspress.com
Happy reading!

Mark Gatiss Praises “Fantastic” Peter Capaldi
Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Mark Gatiss has promised that Peter Capaldi will be ‘fantastic… really something’ in the next series of Doctor Who.
Chatting to the Radio Times on the red carpet at Sunday’s BAFTA awards, the long term Who writer, guest performer and fan didn’t add to what we already know about his forthcoming episode, scheduled to go out third in Series 8, but clearly feels the new Doctor is more than up to the job.
The story, already shot and featuring guest stars Ben Miller and Tom Riley, is currently the one for which we have the most informaton, what with rumours of merriment in Sherwood Forest seemingly confirmed by location snaps.
Elsewhere in the interview, Gatiss describes An Adventure in Space and Time, which missed out on the award for single drama to Channel 4′s Complicit, as a story he had wanted to tell for thirteen years, and reflects on the irony that it was those fiendish Daleks who would go on to become the Doctor’s ‘greatest friend’.

Complete Strangers Collect Doctor Who’s Radio Times Audience Award BAFTA!
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
With Faith Penhale, Marcus Wilson and The Day of the Doctor director Nick Hurran the only faces at Drury Lane to collect Doctor Who‘s Audience Award BAFTA last night, it would seem quite likely that either the Lanzarote sunshine is too addictive to leave for a country in the middle of a heatwave or no one expected to win.
Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are apparently both overseas too, and although Mark Gatiss was in the audience it fell to this trio of largely unfamiliar, non-famous people to collect the gong. After, Penhale was spoke to assembled journalists, in which she described it as a “really, really special moment for the show.”
It’s always wonderful to win an award that is voted for by the people who watch and love the show. Also it feels really fitting after 50 years of the show to win an award like this.
We make the show for the audience. We want the show to be loved by as big an audience as possible. You can never forget the fans.
Doctor Who – specifically the 50th anniversary special – faced off a challenge from Broadchurch, Breaking Bad, Gogglebox, Educating Yorkshire and The Great British Bake Off. Great work!

Behind the Scenes: Doctor Who Restoration Video
Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
The discovery of thought to be lost Doctor Who episodes has been in the forefront of Who related news in the last year or so, no doubt in part due to the persistent #omnirumor.
However, finding these treasures is only half of the battle. In the same manor that older movies and albums are rereleased under the moniker of “remastered,” these lost episodes that find their way back to the BBC on timeworn reels have to be shown an appropriate amount of TLC.
Key member of the Doctor Who Restoration Team, Paul Vanezis, has posted a must-see video to YouTube documenting some of the steps that have to be taken to save and restore these missing stories. The process is rather fascinating and the video is most definitely worth a look, if only to shed light on just why these things take so much time to release.
Watch above and let us know what you think, won’t you?
(With thanks to Gareth, Joe)

The Day of the Doctor Wins BAFTA!
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
The Day of the Doctor has won the Radio Times Audience Award at the BAFTAs!
The award is voted for by members of the public, so it shows Doctor Who‘s massive popularity that the 50th anniversary special has triumphed. And even more impressively, it was up against some much-loved shows, including Broadchurch, Breaking Bad and The Great British Bake Off. John Bradley, Sophie Turner and Jerome Flynn presented the award.
Unfortunately, An Adventure in Space and Time, Mark Gatiss’ masterpiece, reliving the early days of Doctor Who, was nominated for Best Single Drama but lost out to Channel 4′s spy-thriller, Complicit. But at least David Bradley, who played William Hartnell in the drama and Solomon in 2012′s Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, won Best Supporting Actor for his heart-breaking role in Broadchurch (which won Best Drama Series), and Olivia Colman (The Eleventh Hour) won Best Leading Actress for her role in the same Chris Chibnall-created show.
Sarah Lancashire, aka Miss Foster from 2008′s Partners in Crime, got the Best Supporting Actress award for the excellent Last Tango in Halifax too, so it’s been a great night for Whovians!
Special thanks must go to showrunner, Steven Moffat, and lead actors, Matt Smith, David Tennant, John Hurt and Jenna Coleman. You’re all brilliant. And well done to everyone involved in making the 50th anniversary so special.
You officially did us proud!

Gallifrey Falls… No More!
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Let’s be honest: some fan videos suck. Listening to rants and watching reactions is dull. Endless “‘shipping” compilations with irrelevant music is also getting very old. One the other hand, artistically remixing trailers and clips that have already been seen is turning into something of an artform.
Once example is Gallifrey Falls No More by Kilia93, which features the voices of the Doctor as played by Paul McGann, John Hurt, David Tennant and Matt Smith, along with Billie Piper as The Moment.
Click play, put it in full screen mode, turn up your volume to appreciate the “Gravity” soundtrack by Stephen Price and just, well, enjoy!

Musketeer’s Tom Burke: Audience Award BAFTA Belongs to Doctor Who!
Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
In a brief interview with the Radio Times, The Musketeers actor, Tom Burke, gave his thoughts on who should win the Radio Times Audience Award at tonight’s BAFTA TV Awards.
When asked who should win the coveted award, Burke said:
I’ll say Doctor Who. I met Tom Baker when I was a kid, because my mum grew up with him in Kent.
We bumped into him at the supermarket and she said to him, ‘Tom wants to be an actor.’ And he said, ‘Oh, don’t be an actor. Be a movie star!’
A sterling recommendation from one of current Doctor, Peter Capaldi’s, former co-stars! The British Academy Television Awards are tonight Sunday at 8:00pm on BBC One. Will you be tuning in? Do you agree with Burke’s assessment? Sound off below!

Rare Denys Fisher Leela Doll Complete With Original Box Now On EBay!
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Fancy some rare Doctor Who merchandise in great condition? This Denys Fisher Leela doll from 1977 might be right up your street…
Currently listed on eBay, this is a figure in great condition complete with a tip-top box! While the figure doesn’t resemble Leela of the Sevateem actress Louise Jameson, it remains a fascinating piece of merchandise, originally released alongside a police box, Revenge-design Cyberman, friction Dalek and K9 toys, a Giant Robot from the 1974 serial Robot and a Fourth Doctor who resembled The New Avengers‘ Gareth Hunt rather than then Doctor Who star Tom Baker.
This rare toy from 1977 has been kept extremely well. Still in its original box, the doll of companion Leela is complete with original knife. Purchased at the time of release this figure is famous as actress Louise Jameson deliberately gave the manufacturing company the wrong vital statistics & as a result the doll is indeed quite busty.
A wonderful collectors item in fantastic condition
Bidding for this item ends in 5 days (Friday, 23 May, 2014 20:53:53 BST) and with the price currently at £157.00 price currently at £157.00 this is the chance to grab a superb piece of classic Doctor Who merchandise!
