Stars Of Doctor Who Are Everywhere This Summer!
Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
It’s a real testament to the popularity of Doctor Who that so many of the show’s actors can be seen in so many other projects.
BBC America’s Anglophenia page has a list of where many of the show’s stars can be seen (and heard!) in the upcoming months. The list is geared mostly to a mostly USA audience, of course, but does reveal some casting that might not have been widely known…until now!:
A perfect is example is that the War Doctor himself, John Hurt, will be seen with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the big-budget version of Hercules. Hurt will also be seen on TV in the USA as The CW network broadcasts the fantasy mini-series Labyrinth (also featuring Vincent and the Doctor‘s Tony Curran).
Peter Capaldi, debuting this Fall as the Twelfth Doctor, will soon appear on BBC America’s broadcast of The Three Musketeers on 22 June.
Amy Pond actress Karen Gillan was recently seen in Oculus, but her more important (if smaller?) role will be in August’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Some people are already likening it to Star Wars.
Tenth Doctor David Tennant will be heard in the animated Postman Pat and seen in What We Did On Our Holiday. Neither is scheduled for a USA release as yet.
Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston will be seen in HBO’s newest buzzworthy series, The Leftovers, starting on 29 June.
Coincidentally, Billie Piper can be seen in the buzzy Showtime eight-episode series Penny Dreadful. It starts this weekend.
Gugu MBatha-Raw, who played Martha Jones’s sister Tish in Doctor Who‘s series three, can be seen in Belle. The film is already receiving good reviews from Entertainment Weekly, among others.
And be on the lookout for Catherine Tate (Nativity 3), Matt Smith (in Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, Lost River), and Arthur Darvill (Penguin).
Kasterborites, which non-Who project from our favorite Who actors are you most looking forward to?

Guest Star Ben Miller “Acquires” Doctor Who Paraphernalia

OK, maybe raids is a little strong but the star has come away from his special guest turn in the new series loaded up like a bandit apparently.
Ben, who is set to play what he calls “a dastardly villain with considerable sideburns” in an episode penned by Mark Gatiss, told Spectator magazine that as a Whovian himself he couldn’t resist storing up on items while he was there.
I’ve taken stuff from set including loads of photos which is very naughty because you’re not allowed to. I’ve kept everything; schedules and all the things you’ve got to wear and the scripts. I’m hording it, I’m seeing it as my pension.
Quite frankly if I was in his shoes I would have done the same thing. But whats most interesting about this is the nugget of info regarding his appearance. We now know he’s in a Gatiss episode as a villain, promising start, the sideburns could imply period setting as does the use of the word dastardly so fingers crossed we are looking at something along the lines of The Unquiet Dead and The Crimson Horror. Throw in the Robin Hood episode shooting we’ve seen on location…
What are your thoughts, is the idea of another period piece from Gatiss appealing, or are you more interested in seeing what Mr Miller has acquired from the set and hoping it turns up on eBay if times get tough?
And could the actor and comedian be planning some future convention appearances, with props in tow?
Drop us a line and let us know.

Change to Kasterborous Comments Policy
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Over the past few months we’ve noticed an increase in the number of comments that are off-topic, pedantic, or needlessly critical of the articles upon which they have been posted.
Now, I’m not saying that criticism isn’t warranted – we rely on our community to keep us straight – but it would be far better to keep such messages private rather than getting away from the point of the topic under discussion.
As a result, we have formulated a new comments policy.
In future, comments must be on-topic, not insulting to other readers and treat the contributors of Kasterborous – who offer their time free of charge – with appropriate respect.
Meanwhile, anyone who has criticism of a particular post – including whether they think it is factually or grammatically inaccurate - should email me. Factual errors will be resolved, and the person(s) who contacted us will be credited (comments along these lines will of course be accepted, but the preferred route is a direct email so I can make the changes as immediately as possible).
These new rules will be highlighted at the foot of every article. Let’s keep everything tidy and stick to the point – discussing Doctor Who!

Torchwood & Sarah Jane Adventures To Join Doctor Who Legacy?
Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Are you a fan of the mobile Doctor Who: Legacy game from Tiny Rebel Games and Seed Studio?
Since its release across various mobile platforms back in November 2013, the game has quickly become a favorite with Who fans young and old, especially with its easy to understand “match-3″ type gameplay. And being able to to team the Doctor with his companions to face some of his greatest foes of the past 50 years has only made it even more fun!
While the game originally included the Eleventh and Tenth Doctors and some of their companions, more Doctors and companions have continued to be added to the ranks, from Clara and Amy and River to the Eighth, Seventh, and Third Doctors, each with their own unique abilities to help in fight to save the universe. In fact, a new playable character was added to the game’s Fan Area this week – Jenny, the “Doctor’s Daughter”!
We’ve even gotten a few side characters from the Who universe – Captain Jack and Ianto Jones from Torchwood and Sarah Jane Smith and K9 (Mark 2) from the Sarah Jane Adventures.
Recently, Jess Griffin of Project: Torchwood spoke with one of the game’s creators, Susan Cummings, about the game and about what other characters players might see as the game continues to grow.
You brought us Captain Jack and Ianto Jones soon followed will you be bringing us Gwen Cooper and maybe the rest of the Torchwood team? (I would love to see Toshiko Sato and Dr Owen Harper).
Absolutely! Gwen Cooper has officially signed off on joining the game, so we’re planning to have her in during (or before) season 4. We would love to do a Torchwood specific side story to the main game which incorporates not just the whole Torchwood Three team, but the more Torchwood specific aliens and themes.
We have Sarah Jane Smith are there any plans to bring in Luke and the other characters from The Sarah Jane Adventures?
We’re not just huge fans of Doctor Who but the whole of the “expanded universe” as well. We would love to dive deeper into the Sarah Jane universe, in the same way as we would love to do more with Torchwood.
Check out the rest of the interview with details about how the game came to be and about the process for introducing new characters over on the Project: Torchwood blog!
Who would you like to see in the game next? I am currently still playing through the Season 5 levels but am surprised we haven’t seen Rose Tyler in some form, either as Rose, as Bad Wolf, or event the Moment! And we need Donna Noble! Imagine playing a team with the Tenth Doctor, Donna, and the Adipose!

Doctor Who Insider: Capaldi and Coleman “Sizzle” In New Series
Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are said to have ‘sizzling’ chemistry in the new Doctor Who episodes completed so far for Series 8.
That’s according to an unnamed ‘source on the show’ (yup, one of those) who reckons the BBC couldn’t be more pleased with what they’ve seen so far from the new Doctor.
He is the oldest Doctor and there is a sense he is more distanced from his assistant, more of a mystery. He is perhaps less a mate, and someone she looks up to. She has to try and gauge him – but dramatically it’s very satisfying and onscreen they work very well together.
Capaldi is said to have shades of Pertwee in is portrayal, indicating we could be in for a more patrician figure than we’ve grown used to in recent years.
He is his own man – very distinctive… There is a real buzz about this Doctor. And of course the monsters are great.
Interestingly we’re told not to expect too much in the way of continuity references, with story lines staring from ‘the bottom up’.
It’s always as well to suspect a certain amount of PR spin with these kind of statements, of course, but these and other hints we’ve had lately do point to a different feel in the next series.
What do you think? Relishing some Capaldi/Coleman sizzle? Or should this source have stayed in the bottle?

Something for the Weekend: 13 Doctors Clip Special Edition

Excited and thrilled by the excellent “no sir, all thirteen of them!” moment in Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor, but felt it was too short?
You’re not alone, but talented YouTube user John Smith has done something about it.
Something… wonderful.
Enjoy!

Evolution of the TARDIS Key: Brian A. Terranova’s Collection
Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Fans with a keen eye for detail will enjoy this intriguing curiosity put together by Kasterborous’s very own Brian A. Terranova. Regular cosplayer and Tenth Doctor lookalike Brian has accumulated an impressively researched collection of every TARDIS key ever featured on screen in the programme.
It’s fair to say the keys fall into two distinct categories: the more elaborate, sci-fi implements used by Doctors Three, Four, Seven and Eight and the rather more everyday… well, door keys, really.
Evolution of the TARDIS Key by Terrasolo on deviantART
But that’s not to under-sell the fine work Brian has done to gather this beautifully presented set. Evidently one with a keen eye for accuracy, he goes to impressive lengths in his commentary to ensure we get the full facts on each version of the key, whilst taking care not to make any inaccurate claims:
“The TV Movie key is not a replica, it is the same 800-Trekker key that was used in the show. That is I bought mine from the same place as the TVM did, not that my key is the screen used one. But they are identical.”
We like your style, Brian. What do you think? Is an ordinary Yale just right for a citizen of the universe like the Doctor? Or does he deserve something a little more other-wordly to let himself in after a hard day saving the galaxy?

Are Doctor Who Action Figures Heading For A Return To 5″?
Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
It’s no secret that in Doctor Who collector and fandom circles, the Character Options line of action figures has seen a fair amount of criticism as of late.
From the new smaller 3.75″ sizes (who knew they had the Master’s shrink ray?), to paint jobs that look like they were done by a frustrated Sontaran, to a Clara Oswald figure that makes the beautiful Jenna Coleman look like Eddie Izzard after a trip to a cut-rate salon, fans aren’t happy. The clip above perhaps demonstrates the bad feeling in its more humorous form…
An article on KDramastars.com points out part of the problem:
“One thing to realize is that paying a hefty price is no problem to collectors as long as detail and playability is of the highest degree. Toy manufacturers seem to think that just because it is Doctor Who and the figure somehow resembles the Doctor, anyone would be willing to shell a huge amount of money just to buy it.”
The site also tries to see the company’s side of things, but the writer’s frustration can’t help shining through:
“Character Options have defended their shift in size by claiming that everyone can now easily own one. Parent will not have any problem spending around $12 for a single figure. The fact that detail has been sacrificed and collectors feel that Character Options is just banking on the Doctor Who popularity is reason enough not to purchase the new Doctor Who figures.”
There is a slight glimmer of hope that the company may be responding to some of the complaints: Interestingly, rumours suggest that we may see two new 5″ Dalek sets.
Based on Asylum of the Daleks, one Classic and one New series set, and B&M and Toys R Us exclusives. Hopefully, this will lead to further developments in this size.
Kasterborites, what do you think of the 3.75″ Character Options action figures?
(Thanks to Ian)

Matt Smith Will “Happily” Return To Doctor Who!
Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Come the 60th anniversary and Matt Smith may once again don the fez, tie his bow tie and spread Jamie Dodger crumbs around the TARDIS.
The Eleventh Doctor commented that he would love to appear alongside his fellow Doctors once again during his appearance at the Wizard World Comic Con Panel.
Speaking of his time filming with the Tenth Doctor David Tennant for the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, Smith said:
It was a real historic moment for me. I always look at David and go, ‘Oh my god. It’s Doctor Who!’ David is a great guy and a good friend. It was so fun. Doctors in the same room is just magic, isn’t it!
Smith then went on to utter the kind of exhilarating words that he’ll have to strenuously deny come any future anniversary event:
I’ll happily come back for another anniversary!
Huzzah! See you in 2023! Make sure you clear your space diary (it is the future after all)

Sylvester McCoy Recalls The Five(ish) Doctors Ahead Of Con Appearance
James Lomond is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
It’s always nice to see different incarnations of the good Doctor getting along. Canadian Community newspaper site, NiagaraThisWeek.com has featured an interview with Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy in anticipation of the Niagara Falls Comic Con next month at the Scotiabank Convention Centre.
He talked about the experience of filming the Hugo-nominated film The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot with his co-stars. The half-hour spoof about Classic era Doctors conspiring to have a role in the 50th Anniversary special, Day of the Doctor featured McCoy alongside Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison and Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker with appearances from three other Doctors and a host of Who-related celebrities.
McCoy commented,
It was great fun. We’ve all know each other over the years professionally. I worked with Peter on stage shows and Colin I’ve known from conventions and stuff. It was like a home movie. It was all because of Peter Davison’s brilliance. He wrote it, he directed it he edited it, he produced it. He did a wonderful job of it.
He certainly did. If you’ve not seen it you can catch it below – it’s a warm and self-deprecating celebration with a huge sense of humour, and definitely worth watching again, right now.
Sylvester also commented on his casting as the Doctor and working on The Hobbit. Read the rest of the interview at www.niagarathisweek.com.
