Long-term TBI

After 14 years of making great progress, Michelle has had a major setback. Suddenly she has a great deal of spasticity in her legs and has a hard time standing. Her knees stay bent and it is hard for her to get out of her wheelchair. Is there anyone out there who has had a similar experience?

Sunday in NYC – Gershwin Theater

Michelle went to see the play Wicked on Sunday in New York. It was at the Gershwin Theater. This is a wonderful theater for persons with disabilities. If you are looking for easy access, good parking, and family handicapped bathrooms this is the place to go. Not to mention that it’s a great play.

Christmas Evening in ER

Michelle spent Christmas evening in the ER because of a possible malfunctioning of her shunt. All turned out well but we came away realizing that ER doctors do not understand brain injury. After about six hours of watching hospital personnel at computers, and little time at patients’ bedsides, Michelle lost her patience and began to scream. The ER doctor was ready to tranquilize her when the results of her final test came back and Michelle was allowed to leave. Our discharge notes began with a printout on temper tantrums for young children. Please, Michelle was only verbalizing what we were all thinking.

Am I A Burden?

It’s important to remember that persons are not burdens. When there are insufficient social, financial, and emotional supports the work of caregiving can become burdensome.

Happy Birthday Michelle.

Happy 36th birthday to my darling daughter. It’s now been almost 15 years since she was hit by a car and we are so thankful every day to still have her with us. She works so hard every day in her therapies and always brings a smile to everyone who comes into contact with her. What a treasure!

Hurricane Sandy

I’m sitting in a hot spot for Optimum on Line with my iPad because we still don’t have an Internet connection. Thank God our family is safe but it’s doubly hard going through a disaster like this when caring for a person with a disability.Someone with a brain injury has a difficult time amusing oneself without planned activities.Maneuvering a wheelchair and transferring someone in the dark is an added challenge.Hope everyone is safe.
